Copra trading price in Eastern Visayas picks up

CA arms its earlier decision on Pfleiders case

TACLOBAN CITY The Court of Appeals (CA) has denied with finality the motion for reconsideration filed by retired Police Chief Supt. Edwin A. Pfleider of its October 23 2012 decision in relation to a murder case filed against him. Pfleider, being the private respondent raised procedural and substantial grounds to support the plea for reconsideration. Named public respondent was Judge Rogelio Sescon of RTC Branch 9, this city. However, in a six-page resolution penned by Associate Justice Carmelita Salandanan-Manahan promulgated on June 26, 2013, a copy of which was obtained by Leyte Samar Daily Express yesterday, the CA denied Pfleiders motion for reconsideration for lack of merit. In a recent visit to Oras, Eastern Samar during the media caravan organized by the National Nutrition Council-8, Leah Oculam, the municipal social welfare and development officer said, that the agency hits two birds with one stone. She said It paved the way to teach the daycare-children and their parents the proper nutrition in preparing food. Our language is Winaray

Leytenhon-Samarnon, and not the above word formation, if parallel structure must have it. Still, this compound name does not settle the old problem of ignoring the Cebuano speaking parts of the two islands. Winaray, then, is the only most qualified name for this language. It connotes how the language is spoken. If you ask how the language is spoken, or written, Winaray is the right answer. It suggests action, direction, and procedure. It is very active. Besides, it cannot be used like the word waray to refer to people, or to the areas speaking the language, but only to the language of these people and nothing more. Somehow, contemporary users of the language, and even the supposed authorities in it, are starting to heed the issue. They used to refer to this language as Waray, but now they are using Winaray for the purpose, such as in their publications, having perhaps realized the wisdom that goes with its usage, and non-usage. I dont care if they dont give me credit for my advocacy so long as the language I uphold gets what it deserves. Yes, let this be the name. Next time you refer to this language, say its Winaray. Its not only appropriate; it is also very precise. Replace it with other names and it will have no more use under the sun. What an accurate name.

The growth of the computer industry has marked another giant leap for mankind. This has opened various opportunities and has realized the wildest imaginations. The industry literally paved the way for an easier and faster lifestyle. However, unnoticeably, it also stirred up, especially among the youth, the common venial sin of Sloth. When I was in school, I was exposed to research early because I was enrolled in a special program by the government. My mentors have instilled the appropriate procedure of conducting research. I have a modest understanding of the whole process but I also believe that I still have a lot of things to acquire in time. Today, on the contrary, high school and some college students have misconceptions of research. These misconceptions involve the improper usage of computers and the Internet. My sibling Pauline spends all of her allowance for snacks, cellphone load or Internet. I see that the lions share of her allowance goes to net surfing. She opens her accounts in networking sites and after, does intensive World Wide Web research. Whatever pieces of information she gathers from the web instantly becomes her output for submission. She misses the more accurate, reliable and believable information that the library or up to date books can offer. I have observed the same to my peers younger sibling. The control C and control V syndrome has spread and is now too potent to cure. This deteriorates the mind-set and workmanship that education is trying to demonstrate among the students. This also diffuses laziness, simple-mindedness and mediocrity. K + 12 is trying to address the problem. The system is aiming to graft better scions by changing the curriculum and by adding a few more years to school. This concentrates on skills enhancement and talent development of the young, but this still does not guarantee a change of attitude. We have changed the teachings to supplement students, but we may also have to attune the teachers at the same time. The attitude and laziness of the students mirror the mentors. This means that the lack of drive and zeal of the subordinates unconsciously sketch the type of teachers we have. It does not go for research

Participants as well as the speakers themselves in the lecture-forum that I attended at UPVTC last July 5 seemed to be undecided, every time they spoke, as to how they should call the native language of Samar and the Northern part of Leyte. Their seeming confusion was remarkable in that, in naming it, they would usually pause before finally coming out with a name to use. For sure, the explanation to this is not that there are lots of names available for this language, because although there seems to be quite many, there is but one very precise and accurate name for it. Its more of confusion on the part of people as to which name should really be used. Its an indecision that has been inherited from hesitant minds, whose doubts were then handed down from generations to the next, usually by word of mouth. Should this language be called Waray, Winaray, Waray-waray, Leyteo, Samareo, Lineyte-Samarnon, Binisaya, or Sinamar? The confusion that generates debates persists. And as it does, the more that it should be discussed intellectually, its answer underscored. Ever since, Ive been emphatically advocating and disseminating to people that, officially, the name of our language is Winaray. I have written about it a number of times already in this column; I discuss it in my classes; I argue it with my friends; and I apply it in my own usage of the language. Its just that, amid those years of indecision, I feel its time we made use of an official name for our mother tongue. Why do I insist and go for Winaray? Well, I do so dogmatically for a number of reasons. For one, I notice that the rest of these names pose some semantic problems that disqualify them as official names for this native language. Their meanings themselves create those disqualifications. Take the name, Waray. This word means none or nothing. By its meaning

alone, it doesnt make a good name. Nothing good comes out of nothing. Seriously, this name refers more to the people speaking the language, not to the language itself. When used in reference to people, it assumes a deeper meaning, because it then points to an identity of a person or people living in this part of the country. If, semantically, Waray is devoid of meaning, then the name Waray-waray doubles that tragedy. It aggravates the worst. Whoever had coined these words must have been prone to idleness, because thats what this two-word combination suggests. Its a word for inactivity, passivity, hopelessness, desperation; a very negative word, indeed, meaning-wise. Surely, it should not be the name of the regions lingua franca. What about the name, Lineyte? Is it an appropriate name? It is not. It limits the geographical use of the language as though its only spoken in Leyte. Remember that it is more widely spoken in Samar. In fact, this should explain why the people in Samar also came up with the name, Sinamar, dividing the two islands linguistically. But again, these names are disqualified in that not all of Leyte, and not all of Samar, speak the language. There are large parts of the two islands that speak Cebuano and other dialects and should then be spared by these names. The names Leytenhon in Leyte and Samarnon in Samar are merely extensions of the former names, a variation of some sort. The names still suggest the divided places speaking different languages when in fact, they have the same language. The disqualifications of these names, too, are the same. To reconcile both sides, the name Lineyte-Samarnon came out, hoping to settle the issue. But its still the same names coined together to create a funny structure. Why funny, because they dont observe parallelism. It should have been Lineyte-Sinamar, or

I hope Pauline stops talking about teachers sitting all day. I hope my other teachers back in high school stop bringing their businesses in class and adding plus points to students who purchase in bulk. I hope my peers, who are teachers; stop assigning reports the whole semester and limit the beauty of discussion and lecture. Comelec assures SK elections 16 LFTs attend upland rice farming training to push through in October
TACLOBAN CITY - Comelec-8 assistant regional director, Atty. Felicisimo Embalsado has assured that the Sangguniang Kabataan elections will push through this coming Ocbober. It will definitely push through provided that there are no amendments done. Without amendments, there is no reason to suspend the elections. Laws are mandatory, Atty. Embalsado said. However, Atty. Embalsado admitted that there are parties in the Senate who want to suspend the elections. He also acknowledged that there were lapses that happened during the previous SK elections, which were brought up and investigated. According to him these lapses can open up a motion for suspension. During the previous elections, some observed that parents controlled their children, the candidates for the Sangguniang Kabataan. Some voters were kidnapped, given some amount in exchange for a vote. It was a vote buying. Parents should not teach their children to be dishonest, Embalsado said.
