This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installers attention to Article 820-40 of the NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close as possible to the point of cable entry as practical.

Read instructions All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the appliance is operated. Retain instructions The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference. Heed warnings All warnings on the appliance and in the operating instructions should be adhered to. Follow instructions All operating and use instructions should be followed. Cleaning Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. Attachments Do not use attachments not recommended as they may cause hazard. Water and moisture Do not use this equipment near water; for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and the like.

Accessories Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The product may fall causing serious injury and serious damage to the appliance. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the equipment. Any mounting of the appliance should follow the manufacturers instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer. Ventilation Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the equipment and to protect it from overheating. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface. Equipment should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register, or in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided. Power sources This product should be operated only from the type of power sources indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supplied to your home, consult your local power company. For equipment intended to operate from battery power, or other sources, refer to the operating instructions.

Ground or polarization This equipment may be equipped with a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit into the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug. Alternate warnings This equipment may be equipped with a 3-wire grounding-type plug, a plug having a third (grounding) pin. This pin will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounding-type plug. Power cord protection Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the appliance. Outdoor Antenna Grounding If an outside antenna or cable system is connected to the equipment, be sure the antenna or cable system is grounded as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges.

Lightning For added protection for this equipment during a lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the video product due to lightning and power line surges. Power lines An outside antenna system should not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme care should be taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them may be fatal. Overloading Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in a risk of fire or electrical shock. Object and liquid entry Never push objects of any kind into this equipment through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or electrical shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product. Servicing Do not attempt to service this equipment yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards, refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

Damage requiring service Unplug this equipment from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:

Safety check Upon completion of any service or repairs to this video product, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to determine that the product is in proper operational condition. Telephone equipment Observe the following precautions when installing telephone modem equipment:

Replacement parts When replacement parts are required, be sure the service technician has used replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, electric shock, or other hazards.

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to General Instruments CFT-2100 set-top terminal, your connection to cable entertainment. The CFT-2100 features an easy-to-use on-screen display system to view channel listings, set channel control passwords and many other options that will enhance your television viewing. This guide introduces you to the CFT-2100 and provides instructions for set up and operation.

INTRODUCTION

Front Panel
The front-panel control keys can be used to operate the CFT-2100. The LED displays the current channel number, time of day and special operating messages. The front-panel control keys are described further in the section, Using the Remote Control.

Displays the Quick Functions menu. To use quick functions: Press F and then press MUTE to set the best stereo level volume (press VOL IorJ to return to normal) Press F and then press DELETE to clear favorite channel settings Press F and then press SELECT to cancel an Impulse Pay-Per-View event Press F and then press CATV to display the sleep timer screen (for complete instructions see the section, Timers)

Disabling the Remote Control


NOTE Before proceeding, read the steps for disabling and restoring the remote control.

You can temporarily disable your remote control:

On the main menu, select 7 CONTROL PANEL. Select 2 DISABLE REMOTE and then press ENTER. A confirmation screen appears on the display screen and the letters rLo are displayed on the front panel LED.

Restoring the Remote Control


Press any key on the front panel of the CFT-2100 to restore the remote control.

Installing Batteries
NOTE Batteries installed incorrectly can cause battery leakage and corrosion that will damage the remote control.

Before you can use the remote control, you must install two AAA (1.5-volt) alkaline batteries:

Press the battery cover on the back of the remote control and slide open. Insert two new batteries in the direction indicated on the inside of the battery compartment. Replace the battery cover.

If the CFT-2100 does not power on, check the orientation of the batteries or replace with new batteries.

Turning Power On and Off


NOTE To receive cable service, tune your television to the channel recommended by your local TV cable service provider. Examples of channels used by cable service providers are 2, 3, 4 or 13.

Press POWER on the front panel or press CATV on the remote control to turn the CFT-2100 on and off.

Adjusting the Volume


Press VOLUME on the front panel of the CFT-2100 or VOL on the remote control to adjust the volume. When you adjust the volume, the volume scale is displayed on the screen. Press MUTE on the remote control to turn the sound off and on.

Using the On-Screen Display


NOTE The on-screen display is set on a 15-second internal timer. If you do not complete your selection before timing out, you must start again. Read the instructions before beginning.

The on-screen display contains easy-to-use menus for operating your CFT-2100. There are three main menus that enable you to access other screens. When instructed to access the main menu always press MENU to display the first menu. Press CURSOR v or w or press PAGE v or w to navigate through the menus.

Changing Channels
You can change channels in three ways: Use the number keys on the remote control. For example, to change to channel 10, press 1 and then press 0. Use the CHAN v or w to step through the channels. Use the Channel Guide for a list of the channel numbers and names.

Adding Favorite Channels


You can store your favorite channel numbers for quick and easy access. To add favorite channels:

On the main menu, select 3 FAVORITE CHANNELS. Select 1 FAV CHANNEL GUIDE. Press CURSOR v or w to highlight the channel you want to add to the favorite channel list and then press SELECT. Press DISPLAY to exit.

To quickly add a favorite channel, press the channel number you would like to add and then press PROG.

Tuning Favorite Channels


To tune a favorite channel, press FAV on the remote control. Continue pressing FAV to step through all of your selected favorite channels.

Removing Favorite Channels


To remove favorite channels:

On the main menu, select 3 FAVORITE CHANNELS. Select 1 FAV CHANNEL GUIDE. Press CURSOR v or w to highlight the channel you want to remove from the favorite channel list and then press SELECT. Press DISPLAY to exit.

To quickly remove a favorite channel, press the channel number you would like to delete and then press DELETE.

Adding Passwords
The parental control and the Impulse Pay-Per-View features enable you to control channel access using a password. You can create a different password for each. You can lock and unlock channels at anytime. To create a four-digit password (for example, 1234):

To add channels for parental control:

Tuning Channels with Parental Control


NOTE

To tune a channel locked by the parental control feature:

Turning off the CFT-2100 will also lock parentally controlled channels.

Tune to the channel you want to watch. Press SELECT to access the Unlock Box Password screen. Enter your four-digit parental control password and then press ENTER.

When you unlock a channel, all channels are accessible until they are locked again. A key icon displays when the channel is unlocked. To re-lock channels:

On the main menu, select 2 PARENTAL CONTROL. Select 2 LOCK BOX to lock channels. Begin normal operation.

IMPULSE PAY-PER-VIEW
Impulse Pay-Per-View is an optional feature that enables you to purchase special programming without a phone call to your cable service provider. You can control the purchase of programs by setting a password. To purchase Impulse Pay-Per-View events:

For instructions on recording events reference the section, Recording Programs.

Tune to the channel broadcasting the Impulse Pay-Per-View event. When an E flashes on the front-panel LED, press SELECT to purchase the event. Enter your Impulse Pay-Per-View password and then press ENTER.

To cancel the purchase, press F and then press SELECT. If you cant cancel the event, call your cable service provider.

RECORDING PROGRAMS
You can set your CFT-2100 to tune a channel at a specific time for VCR recording. If the channel you are recording is password controlled, such as a parentally controlled channel, you must enter your password to set recording options. When you use the CFT-2100 to record programs on your VCR, the remote control is automatically disabled to prevent accidental changing of channels. The remote control is restored when the recording process is complete.

NOTE

If a channel becomes parentally controlled after it is programmed to record, it will not be accessible. The parental control lock must be removed.

Setting Alarm Timers


You can program the CFT-2100 to turn itself on or off every day using the TURN-ON TIMER and TURN-OFF TIMER screens:

On the main menu, select 5 ALARM TIMERS. Select 2 TURN ON TIMER to turn the timer on, or select 3 TURN OFF TIMER to turn the timer off. Press CURSOR v or w to the desired time and then press ENTER to accept and exit, or press DELETE to clear timer settings and exit.

Setting Sleep Timers


The sleep timer feature enables you to program the CFT-2100 to turn off after a preset amount of time. To set the sleep timer:

On the main menu, select 5 ALARM TIMERS and then press ENTER. Select 1 SLEEP TIMER and then press ENTER. Press SELECT to highlight either 30 MIN, 1 HR, 2 HRS, 3 HRS, or DISABLE (to stop a timer that has previously been set). Press ENTER to confirm your choice and exit.

A red message indicator light on the front panel will appear when you have a general information message. To read general information messages:

Changing the Background


You can change the appearance of the on-screen display by changing the background. The two selections that can be changed are MENU (on-screen display) and STATUS (Channel Guide and Channel Lock screens). To change the background:

Moving the Screen Display


You can customize the location of the display on your TV screen. To move the screen display:

DISPLAYING THE TIME


Your CFT-2100 can be set to display the time of day on the front-panel LED. If you choose to display the time, the channel number appears only when tuning channels. To display the time:

THE AC CONNE CTOR


The AC outlet feature enables you to turn your TV and CFT-2100 on and off at the same time. To use this feature, insert your TV electrical plug into the AC outlet on the back panel. This feature is set to SWITCHED OUTLET at the factory. To disable, you must change the setting.

NOTE

Never connect a VCR to the AC connector or VCR settings can be lost when the CFT-2100 is turned off.

Restoring the system to default settings erases all of your selections for screen appearance, screen position, optional time display, and AC outlet use. It does not erase passwords or reset timers. The default settings are: A black box for the on-screen display appears in the lower center of the screen The channel number appears on the front-panel LED The AC outlet is set to SWITCHED, controlling both the TV and CFT-2100

To restore default settings:

Connecting a TV and VCR


To connect your VCR, you will need 75-ohm coaxial cables equipped with F-type connectors. You can find coaxial cables in your local electronics store. The VCR connection illustrated, enables you to record cable programs including Impulse Pay-Per-View events.

Connecting a Stereo Receiver


NOTE The audio and video cables can be used with TVs having phono connector inputs.

Mono audio from the CFT-2100 can be connected to your stereo receiver. Phono cables can be used to connect the audio and video output of the CFT-2100 to the stereo receiver.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Problem
The remote control is not responding

Possible Solution
Check for an obstruction between the remote control and the CFT-2100. Check that the batteries have been installed properly and replace with new batteries if necessary. Check if the remote control has been deactivated.

There is no sound coming from the TV

Check to see if the sound has been turned down. Press MUTE on the remote control to restore sound. The word MUTE will not appear when the system displays:


The CFT-2100 is not receiving a cable signal

Active Menu screens Event screens Credit screens Parental control screens

Turn on your TV only to see if you are getting a video signal. If you are not, call your cable service provider. Check that the cables are securely connected.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Problem
A password is not registering

Possible Solution
Re-enter your password by pressing the numeric keys firmly and deliberately. Verify that you are entering the correct password. If you forget your password, call your cable service provider.

A password is entered incorrectly three times The Impulse Pay-Per-View credit limit has been reached or exceeded The CFT-2100 is not displaying the correct time An event is not available for purchase My VCR did not record a program

Wait 15 minutes and try entering your password again. If the system will not take your password, call your cable service provider. Call your cable service provider.

Call your cable service provider. No action necessary. Check that the CFT-2100 is plugged into a live electrical outlet. Never plug the CFT-2100 into an outlet controlled by a wall switch. Be sure you have programmed your VCR to record the program. Be sure your VCR is tuned to the CFT-2100 output channel.
