Common Cause aims to strengthen public participation in government; curb the excessive influence of money in politics; ensure that

government serve the common good, rather than special interests; promote fair, honest and transparent elections; and fight for a vigorous, independent and diverse media. Common Cause Hawaii interns will learn about and work on Common Causes key issues of: money in politics, voting and elections, and legislative transparency & ethics. Outcome Interns will gain an understanding of the legislative process and Hawaii politics, learn about citizen engagement, and gain working knowledge of current democracy issues at the state and national level. With prior arrangements, interns may gain nonprofit management experience as well. Projects Through the duration of the internship, participants may be involved in a number of projects which primarily entail research and writing, and social media messaging and communications, but may also include public outreach, event planning, and monitoring government meetings. If an intern would like to propose a project to work on that is relevant to Common Cause, arrangements can be made with the executive director. Research and writing, and monitoring government meetings o Write policy papers with the supervision of the executive director o Attend legislative and other government meetings o Draft meeting summaries and social media posts o Research policy statistics on key Common Cause issues Social media and communications o Co-write blog posts for Common Cause political fundraising watchdog blog o Tweet from Common Cause events and government meetings o Update Facebook with Common Cause Hawaii event-related posts Public outreach and event planning o Help coordinate and staff outreach workshops, booths, and Common Cause events o Help Common Cause in outreach and community organizing o Find ways to incorporate visual and theatre arts with Common Cause advocacy Nonprofit advocacy management o Arrangements can be made to include exposure to nonprofit management skills

Common Cause Hawaii Internship Description

Qualifications Undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates are welcome to apply. Prior experience in policy research & writing, event planning, community organizing, politics or nonprofit organizations preferred, but not required. Requirements Interns must Be willing to manage a public social media persona. Not be publically engaged in partisan politics or attend political fundraisers held by elected officials, political candidates, or political parties. Be able to dedicate 15 hours weekly to the internship. Attend meetings in downtown Honolulu and elsewhere on Oahu as needed. Enthusiasm for democracy issues and a commitment to public service. NOTE: Common Cause Hawaii operates remotely, with weekly in person meetings. Interns must be able to work independently and virtually.
