Almost an obsession...
My fellow angling buddies, It is the month to write goals & resolutions for the next year, 2013. So what are our resolutions? Well, it is still November as I write this, but one thing I know for sure is that in 2013, The Asian Angler will go to the fields bringing fun activities to all of you. This month we launch a few new things. Being a Digital Magazine we are pushing further the interactive boundaries. The Asian Angler now comes with videos. You can read & watch The Asian Angler. How cool is that? We have also decided to do a lite version for readers with slower internet speeds of which is easily loaded. This month we add new sections to The Asian Angler and they are Knowledge Wise and History Buffs, both fantastic additions, so do check them out inside. Here is a piece of good news, we have gone international. Our records show that the majority of our readers are from Malaysia & Singapore, followed by Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, USA, Indonesia, Philippines, & Europe. With that in mind we look forward to adding stuffs for the international market in the near future. Before I pen off I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of The Asian Angler & our families to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, & a Fantastic Happy New Year. Thank you. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

Shimano Scorpion DC
By Philemon Foo
no Scorpion DC. In fact I have also used the Shimano Scorpion DC but never long enough to get intimate. So far it has been an okay reel to me and I always find myself running back to my favourite Abu Garcia reels. I have good reasons to do so. I dont own those reels and I tried them out because friends that I fished with encouraged me to give it a try and I always get a bit worried if anything belonging to someone else were to go wrong in my hands.
The Shimano Scorpion DC is an easy reel to cast and it is because of the DC Technology.
Easy Caster
I take the setup out to the playground and started to fish on dry land. Some kids playing nearby walked up to me and one of them asked uncle nak tangkap apa? (Translated to uncle, what are you catching?). That was a funny experience. The Shimano Scorpion DC is an easy reel to cast with. It is one of those reels that are very forgiving. It is like driving an automatic car. Just put the gear in D, step on the accelerator, and you are on your way. The Scorpion DC felt just like that. Just choose the right setting of which is based on line type, press down the thumbar, and cast. The likelihood of an overrun is almost none existent. It is a reel that beginners to baitcasting, will find easy to learn with. Just set the reel right and cast. The DC thingy inside will do the rest of the work. Casting the Scorpion DC is also quite addictive as one tries to push the reel further and further. Yes it can and will reach a point where it surrenders but then again that applies to all reels.

My Thoughts
All in all the Shimano Scorpion DC performed well. The drag is smooth and is just enough to help you play and/or control most of our freshwater fishes (just as long as youre not hooked to a giant toman homing in on structures). The reel cast well too and with that I meant the DCs control of the spool; really minimizes overruns. The down part will be the casting distance which I felt to be not as good but still acceptable. The Shimano Scorpion DC makes learning baitcasting easier if one is willing to spend that kind of money. However, learning on the DC system may hamper ones casting ability when one needs to casts on non DC reels. So my take would be this, it makes a good reel to acquaint one to baitcasting (if one has a bigger budget) but one should also use none DC reels to better ones casting skills. So, will I buy one? Indeed I will.
Do research this point please. What we know is that the DC is sealed in and is waterproof. What we cannot confirm is that since the Malaysian weather is hot and humid, there are claims that condensation can happen and it does have an effect on the DC board.

enough. Anglers always want more; more features, weight reduction, and good looks. To constantly meet with the demands of anglers the engineering team too has to be tough.
Casting Test
Before heading to water, I did a few casts on land and it cast well. The Magtrax Brake System (magnetic brakes) worked its magic and casting was easy and smooth (note: the reel is relatively new at time of test). The feel of the spool spinning felt silk like and it was a joy to cast. The new Revo S also felt great in my hands being lower in profile and that somehow created a feel of having better confidence in the cast.
21
So What Do I Think
Looks wise I would say that the new Abu Garcia Revo SX doesnt stand out. It looks like many other reels available in the market with the exception of having a lower profile and bigger gear box. However, looks alone doesnt help catch fish. Looks catch anglers and what is more important is the performance. Performance is where the new Revo SX stands out. Being lower in profile I feel that I have better control over the reel of which provides for better confidence during the cast and while playing the fish. On top of that the, powerful drag has stopping power and will be a great aid when playing the brutes (I took it to Belum as well hoping to play a sizable toman but that didnt happen).
I normally do not fish that way but I thought, What the heck, lets just do it, and there you have it, the signature of Revo reels, being tough and with powerful drag, shining forth its glory. Even the guy that helped me net the fish commended on the strength of the reel.
23
When it comes to casting I would say that it cast well, not exceptional but well. The magnetic brakes worked well and distance wise, good. The silky like smoothness of the spool as it rotates during the cast is something else altogether and for that it gains extra points.

Most golfers know that to be good in their game they need the
best clubs, and the best clubs cannot be bought off the shelves. Yes you can pay loads of money for good branded clubs but these clubs may not suit you best. They are made for golfers in general. The best clubs are custom made for a particular golfer. When it comes to fishing, one of the oldest and most experience custom rod builders is Thomas Lee the founder and owner of Thomas Stroker Rods. Thomas Lee has vast experience in fishing spending many years battling brutes out at sea. With such experience he knows that the best rod an angler could use is a rod made especially for him and his preferred type of fishing.

Fuji Components are some of the best components made for fishing. Every angler knows that Fuji makes the best components in fishing and when you are on to a brute you want to ensure that the components on your rod is up to the fight as well as you are. Why risk losing your trophy fish because of component failure? ALPS Reel Seats. A reel seat is not just something a reel sits on. A reel seat also adds on to the cosmetics of the rod. ALPS dont just make quality reel seats. They make quality reel seats that look good of which brings up the value of your fishing rod. Just like a masterpiece of art being perfect in every way, so should your fishing rod be; perfect completely.
Thomas Stroker rods have proven the test of time and have become one of the favorite rods for Big Game Anglers.

SKILL ENHANCERS
things needed for baitcasting, setting up your baitcasting reel, how to cast a baitcasting reel, and we also touched a little bit on brakes. Before we go into the advanced baitcasting techniques, it is important for you to be able to control your baitcasting reel well and I cannot emphasize this point enough. There are a few things you can do and with do I really mean practise. Practise makes perfect if not better.
Having good control over your reel is extremely crucial. The best way to do so is to train your thumb and thus build muscle memory. The only way to do it is to keep practising. 37 38
Feather the spool by placing your thumb lightly over the spool as the sinker, lure, or casting plug (whatever you are using to practise with) drops to the bottom. This picture show thumb position. 39 40
What you will have to do is to loosen the spool control and allow the plug to drop downwards freely. Stop the spool with your thumb just before the plug hits the ground. Now reel it up and allow the plug to drop again but from now on place your thumb lightly on the spool as the plug drops. Feel the line move as the plug drops. Always stop the spool before the plug touches the ground. Keep repeating this exercise. Do this exercise as frequent as possible until it becomes second nature and you can do it without thinking.
View from a different angle. A comfortable grip on your reel and rod is very important. 41 42
Accuracy Casting
Practicing accuracy casting is actually an exercise that makes practising casting fun. Simply casting can become boring but it is important for you to keep practising. To add some fun into your practise, place a target somewhere and try to hit it. You could use a bucket or a box and try your best to cast into it. As you get better, increase the distance between the target and you. You can also decrease the size of your target; say from a bucket to a bowl. This exercise has two benefits. One is that you get used to casting and casting will become second nature. Two is that your accuracy improves and you will be able to control your cast better.
Knowledge Wise
gler confused. What about non-anglers? Last issue I wrote an article where I took two of my friends who have never fished before in their entire lives to Rompin to fish the sailfish. One of them did ask in a somewhat surprised manner, what the breaks were for. Is it used to stop the fish from swimming?
There seems to be this confusion between drag and brakes. Before I move on, allow me to explain generally what they are. The drag is used to add pressure to the fish and yes, the phrase or question Is, is used to stop the fish (without the words from swimming) becomes a tiny bit more relevant here. The objective of adding pressure to the fish is to tire it out.
Brakes on the other hand actually help you with spool control. It actually applies pressure on the spool instead of the fish using forces known to science and anglers as centrifugal forces and magnetic forces. Oh yes, and then there is the DC (Digital Control) Braking System by Shimano that uses a computer to control the spool. The three common braking systems in baitcasting reels are the centrifugal brakes, the magnetic brakes, and the spool control (functions as one).
Centrifugal Brakes
The centrifugal braking system uses the centrifugal forces to help you gain better control of the spool during your cast. Students of science especially those specializing in physics will know what I am talking about and for the rest of us there is always Wikipedia. Here is what Wikipedia says the centrifugal force is. * Centrifugal forceis the apparent outward force that draws a rotating body away from the center of rotation. It is caused by theinertiaof the body as the bodys path is continually redirected. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_force)
48
Centrifugal Brakes of an old Ambassadeur Reel. Noticed that it has four brake pins and blocks. 47
To help you understand better what you can do is to take a piece of rope and at one end of it tie a piece of weight. Hold the other end of the rope and start swinging the weight in a circular motion. The faster you spin the harder the force of the weight pushing outwards. This force is the centrifugal force. Associating that to the centrifugal brakes of a baitcasting reel, the faster the spool spins the harder the brake pins push outwards of which means the higher the centrifugal forces applied. It is this force that helps you to control the spool. The centrifugal braking systems comes in different names and looks such as the Pitch Centrifugal Brake System and the IVCB Brake System used by Abu Garcia Revo reels, SVS Braking System by Shimano, Flying Arm Braking System by Ryobi, and the ACS Cast Control System used by Quantum.
Instead of ropes, imagine the blades of this helicopter. The faster the blades turn the higher the forces pushing outwards. 49 50
Applied To Fishing
The centrifugal brakes help you control the spool up to about 70% (average) of the cast. This means that from the start of your cast to about 70% of it, the centrifugal forces are in use and as the spool slows down; the centrifugal forces become lighter till they have no more effect on the spool.
IVCB-4 a new technology centrifugal braking system that is more convenient to use where you do not have to remove the side plate to adjust your brakes. A similar system is the Ryobi Flying Arm.
51
52
Let us go back to the illustration earlier with a rope and a weight. Imagine adding another rope and weight. Now spinning two ropes and weights is a circular motion adds more centrifugal forces to your arms and you may feel the need to use more effort. The more ropes and weights added, the more pressure you will feel. Now apply that to the brakes in your reel. The Abu Garcia Revo MGX uses a centrifugal braking system as well called the IVCB-IV Braking System. IVCB is short for Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brakeof which is a new type of centrifugal brake system. Centrifugal force setting is done by simply turning the dial that is located on the side plate.
Centrifugal drag found in the Quantum EXo Reels. Looks different from conventional centrifugal braking systems but the principles are the sames.
Instead of using the star type centrifugal brake, the IVCB-IV uses swing arms (located on the spool) that rub against a metal plate (located on the side plate) as the spool spins. The faster the rotation of the spool, the higher the centrifugal forces applied and thus more friction on the metal plate. By turning the dial you are actually moving the metal plate towards or away from the swing arms. * Ryobis Flying Arm Braking System is similar to the IVCB-IV. We will discuss the magnetic braking system in the January 2013 issue. I hope the information given here will be of help to your fishing and decision making for future reel purchases. Till then, Happy Fishing.

Angler s Heavens
them a lot. Being an ex-hotelier I always walk into a hotel or a resort with certain standards in my mind and that is the mind that I have lesser control over of which is the subconscious mind. I have been so used to inspecting hotels and resorts that it became second nature to me. I start taking mental notes the minute I lay eyes on one of these properties. I mentally rate how all the departments perform. I mentally rate how the staffs perform. I mentally rate the property itself like damages, half hearted repair works, etc., etc. Even the room that I am assigned to automatically gets checked and rated. I know I am no more in the hospitality industry but my mind just does it. It is something I have been doing for years and has become somewhat a curse.
57
58
One thing good about this subconscious mental programmed mind of mine is that when a hotel or resort stands out, I know it almost instantly and I get all excited about it. I truly get to enjoy the place and get soaked in its being. I feel that magical aura that makes you want to stay longer. Not many hotels and resorts have this effect on me. Well, one has and I am happy to have found it and now share this good news with all of you.
Finding Nipah
Being to a certain extent a techie, I went on the net searching for places to stay on Pangkor Island, and all the resorts that popped up on Google had quite a few nasty feedbacks on Tripadvisor. The complains were either of the resort itself or someone managing the resort. Then I decided to remove the word resort and just searched for where to stay. Nipah Guesthouse popped up, and the more I researched the more I wanted to experience it.
This was our home away from home for the three lovely days we spent at the Nipah Guesthouse. This is the Deluxed Chalet. 59
60
Nipah Guesthouse
From a hotel room in Lumut I called and smsed Anuar who owns and runs the guesthouse with his wife Alicia together with a small team of staffs. Within a few minutes I received what I would call an honest email stating essential information including information that may put people off like 10 minutes walk to experience nature and 5 minutes walk to the beach. I mean most people would want to be right at the beach. Well, I did. Anyhow, I confirmed my visit and the very next day we were there. The minute I stepped into the Nipah Guesthouse I knew something was different. The first thing to hit me was that there is no counter for checking in or out.
The inside of our room, Simple and cozy with a touch of European B&B (Bed and Breakfast).
61
62
We were greeted by Anuar and Alicia who gave us a warm welcome to their guesthouse. We were offered a seat at a table at the dining and lepaking (hangout) area of which I have since termed The Hangout. In less than five minutes we were looking at cottages. In less than 10 minutes we were in our room taking in the atmosphere. All done with a smile and you get that feeling that you are genuinely welcomed.
This is the F&B outlet of which I would say isnt the appropriate term for it. A more appropriate term would be The Hangout. Guests gather here and have a good time.
64
Guesthouse
The largest cottage is a double storey cottage called the Guesthouse. Ground floor is the living room where family members can relax on sofas and watch some TV or just spend some time together. Upstairs is where the tired body goes to recharge. There is only one Guesthouse available for now.
The biggest cottage available is the Guesthouse, a double story European type cottage. 65 66
Deluxe Chalet
This is where my family and I called home for three days. It comes with a Queen size (or is it double) bed and a single bed. Just nice for my family.
A-Frame Cottage
These are my favourites. I have a little regret now not staying in one of these cottages. The A-Frame Cottage has a double bed below and a stairs leading up to a landing where another mattress could be placed. It is the coolest looking cottage around. I will build one of these when I get a house with a garden. Super nice. All three of them come with built-in bathrooms + toilets, air-conditioning, television, and are well decorated (not over decorated). The prices are really reasonable of which also includes a DIY breakfast where ingredients are prepared and you cook your own style to your own liking, 24 hours coffee and tea for free, free wifi, and the occasion company of hornbills (daily). Whats more is that Anuar and Alicia (not forgetting baby Aila, hope I got her name right) are very friendly hosts. Reminds me a lot of the B&Bs in New Zealand. They are more than happy to spend time with you answering questions and just having some chit-chat over tea or coffee.
68
Family Time
There are a number of things that the family can enjoy in Pangkor Island. There are lots of water sports activities at the beaches in Teluk Nipah (where the Nipah Guesthouse is located) or you could go to Pasir Bogak or Teluk Dalam. You can book trips like Island hopping, fishing, snorkelling, etc. Other activities are banana boat rides, inflatable water castle for kids (out at sea), etc. I prefer quite places and I dont like crowds, so I took my wife and daughter to Teluk Ketapang where the beach is left empty for some reason, with a few people popping by taking a walk and going off. One reason I would think is because of the lack of parking spaces. Who knows. Teluk Ketapang has one of the nicest beaches on the island (accessible beach). The sand unfortunately is not soft and powdery but it is cleaner than other beaches. The sea is also clear and I was having a blast playing with the anchovies that swam near the beach. Whilst playing with the anchovies I saw a fish leap out of the water a mere ten feet (estimated) away from me.
Teluk Ketapang, my favourite beach on Pangkor Island.
71
72
Fishing
For us anglers we could rent a boat and go fishing out at sea, or we can fish from the beach. I didnt have much time and since this section is about holidaying and stealing time to fish, I fished (actually my daughter fished) at the Jetty in Teluk ketapang. There we caught groupers (average about 300g ) and some fusiliers. I saw larger fishes swimming a mere five feet away from the beach but we were out of bait having lost the last sinker to a fish, probably a grouper that took us into the pillars.
Grouper caught off the Teluk Ketapang Jetty. The white blob in the pic is actually a jellyfish. On its left and right are hundreds of anchovies swimming. 73 74
In total we spent less than an hour fishing but it was fun. I have been trying to get my daughter to take up fishing and she never wanted too. On this trip she did and she caught her first fish. Now she wants her own fishing tackle set of which make me happy. A family that fishes together stays together.
Tummy Fillers
On the Teluk Nipah Beach, towards the end of the beach, Opposite the Anjungan Beach Resort are a few Ikan Bakar (BBQ Fish) stalls. They serve very good fish. I had the best ikan tiga rasa (three taste style of cooking, beats me why it is called that way). The fish we had was a daun baru (Spotted sicklefish) and it tasted excellent.
Fishing can be done from the beach. There are fishes swimming within a zone probably 25 to 30 feet from where I am standing.
75
76
My Thoughts
For a place to stay and call home for a few days, the Nipah Guesthouse is a must. I will definitely return for a few more days than the 3 days spent on this trip. Make an early booking before your trip as they have got few rooms and they get a lot of guest from Malaysia as well as other countries. Bring along a good camera to take photos. Hornbills fly into and hangout at the dining area every day. Your kids will love you just for allowing them the privilage to experience this. They make great photo moments. The beaches and fishes swimming around make great photos too. Teluk Ketapang is highly recommended. Spend time there together with the anchovies (they swim in and they swim out), crabs, etc. A real fun place for the family but always be extra careful when at the beach. Do not go during the rainy season. The water loses its clarity and makes it look like any other west coast, mainland beaches of which are mostly unclear. Rent a car to move about the island. Negotiate for a good price. Anyway, it is worth the money. Taxis are not really all that cheap either. Furthermore you may need booth space to carry your luggage and all the fish, cuttlefish, and seafood produce that you have bought. Have fun.
Fancy having a meal with hornbills at your table? Come to The Nipah Guesthouse and experience something extraordinary. 77 78
Nipah Guesthouse received this Certificate Of Excellence for 2012 by Tripadvisor.com. It speaks volumes of the place. 79

Fishy Tales
friends, two from Hong Kong, and one from America visited us with the objective of doing some fishing in our waters. They are Colin, Joseph (Joe), and Philip. We (Ho and I) took them to the Royal Belum Lake to hunt down the tomans (giant snakehead) and sebaraus (Hampala Barb). For me, it was an opportunity to test out some reels as well as to get away from the hectic city life.
83
84
Joe the hunter. Loves nature and had one objective in mind. To land a sebarau and a toman. 85 86
I was pretty confident that we will be catching a toman or two as I brought with me all my favourite toman lures. The game plan was simple. When there are rises one of us would cast our top water lures while the other would cast out a deep diver. If the place is quite one would do popping with poppers while the other go deep with deep divers. My favourite colours were there and they are fire tiger, red heads, natural colored lures (sebarau, tilapia, etc.), etc. I also brought along soft baits of which have never failed me before. My number one favourite soft bait unfortunately cannot be bought anymore and that one type of bait landed lots of tomans. That bait is the Berkley Gulp! Saltwater swimming pogy, 8, fire tiger colored... Hint... Pure Fishing Malaysia please bring in some for the market.
Toman palyground. 87 88
That night we did some strategizing as we cannot do much with the lures that we have. Perhaps we could change the target instead. Joe and Philip wanted to fly fish as well. So the plan was to leave early and target the sebaraus first. As they sun climbed higher we would go for tomans again. In the evening we would go for sebaraus on fly.
Obliging Sebaraus
The next day was a lot more fun. I used my trusty Abu Island II (original colour) spoon, while Joe used his gator or croc spoon (I cannot remember), and we were on to fish. Joe caught his first sebarau to which he aptly named Subarus. There were lots of sebaraus sizes ranging from 900g to the largest about 1.8kg. The idea is to cast into structures and allow the spoon to drop all the way to the bottom. Give it a jerk and reel in fast.
As the sebaraus stopped biting we were back to toman fishing. Again to no avail. Joe caught a kilo plus toman, and our boatman caught another kilo plus toman, and that was it. We decided to return to our hotel for lunch and fish again at three till sun down. That proved to be an excellent idea. At three we were out hunting again. Joe took the opportunity to do some fly fishing and towards the evening he caught his first sebarau on fly. Then came the end of our fishing day.
Post Mortem
Over dinner we found out that Colin, on the other boat, landed a few tomans, and lost a few as well. Philip landed a toman and lost some as well. This means that the tomans were indeed taking lures and something we were doing wasnt right. The answer to that puzzle came in the form of colours. We had in our tackle box the right type of lure, the right sizes of lures, brand doesnt count but yes we had good brands of lures, but what we did not have is this one lure that caught majority of the tomans (except for two), and it was the Rapala Barra Magnum BMAG11, BRT-Brown Tiger that Colin brought from Hong Kong. It was a colour that I wouldnt have chosen for toman fishing. Even Colin admitted that he saw it lying around and it had not been used and would probably never have been used, and decided to bring it along just so that it be used.
Colin the hero of the trip, caught and landed the most toman on his modest lure. 95 96
Lesson Learnt
On this trip we concluded that perhaps it is time we take another look at colours. Maybe we should include lures with colours that we would never give a second glance into our lure boxes. Perhaps the tomans or rather the fishes have recognised the lure colours that have been used over and over again by so many anglers that they have become cautious with such colours. In short, I still believe in traditional lure colours which have proven to catch fish over the years. However, it may be time to include different colours that we would not normally buy for times when the proven colored lures fail to catch fish. At least we have some alternatives in our boxes of which may better our chance of catching a fish during these difficult fishing days.
Reels: 3000 to 4000 size spinning reels will be enough depending on how much line your reel can hold. 100 meters of line is enough. For baitcasting reels anything goes as long as you can hold about 100 meters of line and that you have sufficient drag power. Lures Soft plastics, spoons, hard lures, propeller lures, and poppers will come in handy. Colours again bring your favourites but do remember to bring some that looks odd. Abu Island spoons are great for sebaraus. Bring along a lure retriever as the opportunity to get your lure snagged at the bottom to some tree stump is guaranteed. Generally the boatman can and will help you to retrieve your snagged lure but in case it is snagged too deep, your lure retriever will come in handy.
Note: These tips are general tips and not a rule of thumb. You can use your own proven methods as well as experiment and try out new methods.

Fishy Tales
the first fish species that pops up in our minds would probably be the sailfish. There is good reason for this too. Rompin is known as the sailfish capital of Malaysia. If sailfish were not available there, Rompin would probably not be known to many and that includes Malaysians. I will leave Rompin Sailfish fishing for future issues. In this issue I will talk about a lesser known predator that visited us and gave us a good number of runs.
Needless to say that the main targeted fish on our trip is the sailfish. On our way to the fishing grounds we stopped at a few places to fish for baitfish that will be used as live bait. When we had enough we shot straight for our fishing playground. Using kembong (a species of mackerel) and selar kuning (yellow tail scad) as live baits, we would drift them out. If wasnt long before one of the reels started screaming and we were on to a fish. With the battle on and one of our Vietnamese friends taking on the fight, I could tell that it wasnt a sailfish at the other end. He was playing a cobia which is one heck of a fighter. Anyhow, after a considerable amount of time, the cobia finally surrendered and was brought on board the boat for a round of photos before being released to give another angler a run for his or her money.
Cobias, the bait stealers of Rompin, will give you a good workout. 107 108
Even the bait stealer satisfies the angler as is allowed to be shot by camera.
109
110
111
I have been missing the gym but the cobias would make great workout partners anytime.

Fishing Tackle
Rods: Generally boat rods (for spinning reels or multiplier reels) with weight of at least 15-30lb. You can use jigging rods as well of at least PE3-5. Reels: Spinning or multiplier reels that can hold in excess of 250 meters of 30lb main lines. Main Lines: 30lb braided or monofilament. Braided is recommended as it has very little stretch of which is crucial to set the hook. Leader lines: 40lb to 60lb fluorocarbon is recommended as fluorocarbon lines are less visible in water. One reason for such heavy leader lines is that your bait could be taken by a number of fishes such as the todak (long tom) , sailfish, mackerel , as well as cobias. There are sharks there too. Hooks: Circle hooks are highly recommended. Sizes of hooks to bring along would be from sizes 5 to 7. On our trip we brought only sizes 5 and 6 and lost a lot of fish on the first day. On the second day we used mainly size 7 and we did not lose any fish. The fishes were bigger this year.
113
Live bait well. Some of the best baits are found in here minus the crabs.
114
Note 1: The recommendations here are made for general anglers. Depending on how adventurous you are and your skill level, you can bring lighter equipment or equipment that you are comfortable with. Note 2: Remember to practise bag limits for all other fish species except for sailfish of which must be released.
A Knot A Month
Sponsored by Penn Fishing Tying good knots is one of the most important things that any angler must learn. Certain knots should not be used on braided lines as braided lines are known to cut or damage themselves. Certain types of fishing requires thicker lines and yet smaller knots. There are knots for connecting lines to lines. There are knots for connecting lines to hooks. There are knots connecting lines to spool. There are knots everywhere in fishing. While there are many knots that you could use, you will probably stick to your favourites. Anyway, it is good to learn all of them. For this issue we will show you one of the simpler but effective knots, the Palomar Knot.

Fish iReports
By Mark Lee
This month we played with an app called the Fish ireports by FullScope IT, Inc. Fish iReports is basically an app that allows you to record and share fishing information with your buddies. It is also linked to Facebook and twitter where you can automatically upload your catch.
This shows whats nearby. There are not many Malaysian users using the app thus not many markers. App Name : Fish iReports Developer : FullScope IT, Inc What Is It? : A must have app for every fisherman / angler. It keeps you up to date with what is biting and much more valuable information to make your day a success on the water. Facebook and Twitter integration is supported here to show off your catches. 121
What Fish iReports does is to map out fishing areas near you wherever you may be. It is somewhat to fishing like what Waze is to driving. It is an interesting concept that has yet to catch on in Malaysia. I am not sure if it will catch on in Malaysia as we tend to be secretive and for good reasons. Anyhow, there are benefits to using Fish ireports and I would say that the best benefit would be to know where to go fishing at in areas you are not familiar with.
