Hello and welcome to another issue of Totally Tockington, the newsletter written BY students FOR students. I am sending you this message from the year 2093 and I have an important message to say to you do not press the button, I repeat DO NOT...fizzle...crack...fizzle...sorry about that guys, something weird came over my computer. Anyway, this week we are travelling back to the future (chuckle chuckle chuckle). Jokes aside, this weeks theme really is the future. I am looking at the tea leaves now......I see Alex Jacobi writing about........ Future technologies...I see Abigail telling us about five inventions of the future ... Alex Grocott looks at cars of the future ...hmmmm ...The tea leaves are hard to read now... but they hint of disaster befalling School Squirrel. Okay reading over, now you get down to reading it all. Enjoy! Tom Edwards Editor-in-Chief DO NOT PRESS THE... beeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppppppp

This weeks theme is the future, and as the future is often related to technology, I thought maybe Id look back on moments, in the past, admittedly, that must have seemed like moments of technological genius at the time, but would create a path towards evil in years to come.

Nuclear Fission
In 1938 an Italian man called Enrico Fermi, discovered nuclear fission which is a process where you send two atoms hurtling towards each other at top speed, until they collide. The atoms are split in two which was an amazing discovery. The outcomes?

Thoughtful: nuclear power was created an almost renewable energy source which is fairly safe and very useful. Thoughtless: some bright spark realized that you could use nuclear fission to make bombs powerful enough to destroy cities, creating the atomic (nuclear) bomb.

Dynamite
Dynamite was patented in 1867 by Sir Alfred Nobel. Ironically, this was the man who founded the Nobel Peace prize.

The Future for Mr and Mrs Tovey

by Nkechi Ogbogbo

Thoughtless: dynamite caused so many deaths, that when a newspaper misreported Alfred Nobels passing, he was called the Merchant of Death.

As this weeks TT theme is The Future I have decided to interview Mr and Mrs Tovey on what comes after their retirement and this is what they said Once weve settled in our new home we look forward to seeing what opportunities arise. We are going to live in Pembrokeshire- South Wales. We would like to: Walk the coastal paths with our two dogs, Cedar and Isla. Travel around the British Isles Go to see a few Test Matches

3D Printers
Coming back to the present, you may have heard of the 3D printer, a device which can create just about anything out of plastic, as you will soon find out. Thoughtful: as long as you have the money to pay for a 3D printer, you can create just about anything you want out of plastic.

And see our grandchildren who live in Rugby. Having worked hard all our lives we cannot sit still and do nothing! Mr and Mrs Tovey have run the school for an AMAZING 38 years. The end of the summer term will be a sad one for them and for us. We wish them well with their future plans.

Thoughtless: recently, an American man designed a blueprint for his 3D computer, which was used to create a working gun. He then put the blueprints online, and although the US government has demanded that the blueprints are now taken offline, the 3D gun design has had 100,000 hits already. People are now worried that people will use the 3D printer to mass produce guns. Well, thats all from me. Just remember, if ever in your life you come up with an ingenious invention , make sure it cant be used as a weapon if it falls into the wrong hands.

Future Technologies that will Never Exist

1. Lightsabers: are made-up weapons. Light just cant 2. stop 2 feet from the light source, also a beam of light 3. could not cut through materials. Travelling faster than the speed of light: travelling faster than the speed of light would use way too much energy, the energy it would have to use is bigger than the mass of the universe. You could not control the vehicle. 4. Human Teleportation: scientists cant make a 5. teleporter that can transport the whole human body. 6. Also the energy for the teleporter is simply impossible. Anti-gravity: to create anti-gravity you would have to balance gravity with electromagnetism or aerodynamic lift. Generations of scientists have tried but it is simply impossible. 7. Time machine: a time machine such as the one invented by 8. the writer H.G Wells or The Tardis would need a wormhole in 9. space and the energy of a star or a black hole to work and it could only transport you back in time. The grandfather paradox considered that technology that allows you to kill your ancestors should not exist because then the present would be mixed up. Personal force fields: a force field would work with electromagnetism but cant because of other forces, like gravity and the strong and weak forces, they are too weak or cant go short distances. Coming back to life after cryonic suspension: this is where they freeze people and bring them back to life when they have found a cure for what they are dying of. This cannot be done because if you freeze the brain you will damage the cells and kill the person anyway.

Wide Games Of The Future

by Henry Allan-Jones The Summer is coming at last and its great to play outside. We thought you might like to try out some new outdoor games
Last week Creative Writing Club made up a few games to play at TMS in the grounds. Here is what some of us came up with.

Future Phones
Apple is good at launching the most life changing machines and they are already working on an iPhone 6 and 7! Whether or not 3D screens catch on, the iPhone 7 could have 3D imagery. The iPhone 7 is also meant to have a more advanced screen and wireless charging.

Highball
Henry and Ollie invented a game, which involves only a tennis racquet and ball with four to ten people on each side. Here is how you play. 1. Split up into two teams, one attacking and one defending. 2. The attacking team makes a reasonable sized circle, but they select one person to bat.

Future Computers
Flexibility is going to be a big part of the future, for example Apple is thinking of making a flexible iPad but who would ever think of making a roll-up laptop? Meet the Rolltop which is designed to be rolled up and wrapped around a cylinder and carried over your shoulder! When texting a friend on a touch-screen, typing is very awkward but imagine a virtual keyboard that you can link to your smart phone or tabletWell the Magic Cube made by Celluon is exactly that. Now that is cool!

3. The defending team selects one bowler to bowl and the rest of the defending team spread out and try and catch the ball. 4. The object of the game is to hit the ball up as high as possible, then run round the circle before the fielders either catch you out or pass the ball to the bowler in the middle. 5. Then the runner has to stop and you switch batsman. 6. Once the attacking team have all had a go, then you swap around. Remember no contact! Tom and Alex came up with a game called

Treeball
You need the trees by the swimming pool and the car park to play. You also need two teams and a tennis racquet and ball. Here is how you play 1. One batsman stands at the first tree and bats. The bowler and the defending team field. 2. The object of the game is to run all the way down to the end of the line of trees and back on the other side without being stumped at the starting tree. 3. You get two points for running all the way round and one for halfway.

Future Robotics
When people imagine the future, they often think of hovering cars and robots running around and doing all the housework! For a long time robots were a science-fiction thing, but, in a few years time, there might be robots that can cut the grass without any driver and robot pool cleaners that can clean, maintain and circulate more than 70 gallons of water per minute. The future looks bright.

Real Life Predictions Which Came rue

Inventions for the future

by Lucy England I have always wondered what we will use in everyday life in the future. These are a few of my ideas I thought about the new types of transport we could come across. I think we could be driving a form of bubble car down the road, with all around sound speakers also voice controlled gadgets and massage chairs for a luxurious ride and maybe no wheels!

Predictions are made all over the world from school classrooms to inside Parliament Buildings. When you make a prediction, you give some thought to what is likely to happen in the future. Imagine the surprise of a civil engineer called John Elfreth Watkins if he had known that his predictions made in 1900 would come true Digital Colour Photography :
"Photographs will be telegraphed from any distance. If there be a battle in China a hundred years hence, snapshots of its most striking events will be published in the newspapers an hour later.... photographs will reproduce all of nature's colours.""

Television : "Man will see around the world. Persons

and things of all kinds will be brought within focus of cameras connected electrically with screens at opposite ends of circuits, thousands of miles at a span."

Tanks : "Huge forts on wheels will dash across open spaces at the speed of express trains of today."

Another great idea would be to have small robots to go round your house all day cleaning the hardest areas to reach and getting rid of the toughest of stains from carpets or clothes. These amazing little robots could also have a built in docking station to play your favourite tunes out loud to the whole street as he clings to your side as you are his one and only master. Finally, I think that there will be a suit for all aquatic animals to allow them to experience life on dry land with spaces to store a large amount of water to make them able to survive certain periods of time without being in the sea. This suit will also allow them to use a phone without getting it wet! But what the future will actually bring no one knows!!

Mobile phones : "Wireless telephone and telegraph

circuits will span the world. A husband in the middle of the Atlantic will be able to converse with his wife sitting in her boudoir in Chicago. We will be able to telephone to China quite as readily as we now talk from New York to Brooklyn."

The Acela Express Train : "Trains will run two

miles a minute normally. Express trains one hundred and fifty miles per hour."

If you want to know what he did not get right, look at the website BBC News magazine for Ten 100 Year Predictions Which Came True. It is quite amazing these things have come true! Tell your family your predictions and see if they come true in the future.

A story by Lucy Allan-Jones

It was a dark and stormy night in Cape Town. Emily lay in bed listening to the seas raging outside. Suddenly an especially big wave crashed into the wall. This was one of the disadvantages about living by the sea. But was it - a wave? It sounded more like a metal object than water. Then she heard a thud. It had landed on the sand. Emily didnt waste any time. She was out of bed and hurrying to get her clothes on, all the time wondering what it could be. She peered outside. It was still pelting it down though the thunder and lightning had stopped. She pulled on her raincoat and wellies and yanked open the door. There on her front doorstep was a time machine. It was unmistakable. It was just like the ones Emily had seen in films. A long aerial was poking out of the top of the thing, as thin as a piece of wire. Without hesitating, Emily tried to find the door but there was no door - instead there was a small hatch. The hatch was enlarging, as Emily got nearer, until it was the size of a door. She cautiously prised it open and gasped. Inside the time machine, there was a velvet carpet lining the floor. Every wall was coated in gold leaf and there was a flat screen TV in the centre of the room. Emily felt her body step involuntarily backwards. Without meaning to she foolishly pressed one of the thousands of buttons and the machine hurtled into life. Emily abruptly fell over. She was in a time machine and it was taking her to the future. After several minutes of uncontrollable hurtling, the time machine stopped. Emily got to her feet shakily and opened the hatch. It was like stepping into a dream. Everything was white and sparkling. A woman approached her, saying, Hello what would you like today? Spinning around, Emily saw a sign. It boasted, The very best smoothies in Engiland. At last she found her voice, Dont you mean England? England? England was this country 200 years ago! What year are we in now? 2213 Remembering her manners, Emily said thank you and walked away to distance herself from the mad woman. She soon discovered that everything wasnt white as she had thought. It just had that appearance from a distance. In fact, everything in the future was a shade brighter than in the past and a lot more advanced. Every house had solar panels and every person was walking. There were no cars. Emily wandered aimlessly around, too dazed to take it all in. She had had dreams like this but this was no dream - this was the future. And there was no getting back. She would stay here for the rest of her life.

by Alex Grocott

This is a futuristic Ford Shelby Gt 500 which will be about 20mph faster than it was before and it will maybe cost twice as much as a normal one.

Car technology is changing all the time. Car manufacturers are making cars that go faster but are better for the environment.

The BMWi range markets itself on sustainability. It runs on electricity and so cuts down on pollution and the use of natural resources. It is made of lightweight materials to offset the heavy weight of the battery used to power the vehicle and so is economical and speedy. It is totally recyclable. It has many innovative apps to make it nice to drive in the city. It is meant to be absolutely awesome! It might be 70,000 and over.

So, whether its speed you want or good design or a car that is environmentally friendly, these are great designs for the future.

Sweets of the Future

by Amy Horler
Over the years sweets have changed - from Victorian times when most sweets were hard boiled, to the different types of sweets we have today. Sweets are things that are not that good for you but I think thats what makes them fun. The question is what will they be like in the future? I thought that you would like to see some of my irresistible ideas 1. A lolly that gives you a three course meal and you never know what it will be. 2. A Haribo that if you eat one you get five more. 3. Gum which lets you blow different shaped bubbles. 4. Chocolate which is healthy but tastes like chocolate. 5. Toffee that fills holes in your teeth so you dont need fillings. 6. Skittles that make you go floppy. 7. Drumsticks that you can play the drums with. 8. Starbursts that make you smell nice. 9. Eclairs that you can mould into different shapes. 7

Lexus concept car

This is a Lexus 2054. It is meant to be very fast.It was designed by the Lexus car designer for a Steven Spielberg film. It was driven by Tom Cruise in some action scenes. Lucky him! It is called a concept car because it is not being manufactured for sale. If it was, it would be about 100,000 or even more than that! The car runs on fuel cells and has a crash-proof body. It also has biometric security features which means that it recognises your pupils or your fingerprints. The Lexus design for the future is a car that will drive itself, take dinner orders verbally, and select music to match the moods of the people travelling in it.

Rising Card Trick

1. Grab a pack of cards and get a spectator to choose one. 2. Now put the card they chose on top.

3. Do a cut but by holding the cards with your thumb on one side and fingers on the other side.

4. With your other hand, take some cards from the BOTTOM and put them on a table.

5. Take the rest and put them on top of the ones on the table that will leave the cards in the same order.

6. Hold the cards up in your hand so there is a space at the bottom, then pull some cards down.

7. Finally put your pinky finger on the bottom pack and have your index at the top. 8. Push up with your pinky and from the spectators view it will look like it is rising. Keep going until the card gets onto the 2nd packet.

9. Push the bottom packet up so when you show it to them, it is in the middle.

What Is The Future of Sport?

by Max Curtis Can anyone really beat Usain Bolts 9.58 second 100 metre record? Can anyone really get more than Michael Phelpss 22 Olympic records? Maybe human athletic performance has reached its limit? Or maybe its time for something different?

New sports
Over recent years new sports have been developed, skateboarding and BMX were not around years ago. What is in the future maybe space diving or jet powered jet skis? How exciting would that be!

What about computer simulation?

What about having no human athletes at all and instead watching computer simulated sport ? Then you would always be assured of best action and a most exciting game.

Change for the Better

Rules change over time. Have you heard anyone say They just dont play rugby like they used to!? Maybe this is for the best but certainly with the improvement in technology and the design of equipment sport will continue to change. Does anyone still play tennis with a wooden racquet? No. The game is much faster and more exciting now that the racquets are made of carbon fibre. If you look at what professional swimmers now wear - men and women you will see that their suits make them more aerodynamic and therefore faster. Long gone are the times when we wore a pair of swimming shorts!

Maybe it will all happen. I hope so. I love sport I wonder if Mr Tovey and Mr Jones would consider space diving one Wednesday afternoon? Or maybe some of this in the swimming pool please, Mrs Hinchliffe?!

The bionic athlete

In the past losing a leg meant that everyone thought you could not take part in sport. Nowadays, however, a prosthetic leg means that you can run, and run fast. Just think of Oscar Pistorius The blade runner - he can keep up with the best. Lighter weight wheelchairs mean that more sports are being adapted for wheelchair users. We now have wheelchair rugby and basketball as well as athletes competing in races such as the London Marathon. In the future will they compete with able-bodied athletes? 10 V

But the question is who will ask? Any volunteers?

U11 Boys Cricket

The boys played a home match against the Grange, Monmouth. TMS lost the toss so had to bat second. This meant we had to chase their score. TM's bowling was below expectation in comparison to last week. Many of the balls were bowled on leg side which unfortunately gave away many 4s. TM didn't field as well resulting in a Monmouth score of 165. After the first Innings, the boys had their turn to bat. The opening batsmen were Henry AllanJones and Hamish Gardner. Both of them stayed in for the first couple of overs but it wasnt long until Monmouth got into the stride and bowled strongly. Consequently, Hamish chipped the ball into the air and got caught out. Monmouth continued to bowl with pace and accuracy. As a result, TM lost the match by over 100 runs.

Back to the Future is a film about a very lucky teenage boy. He goes on an epic adventure through time and meets his parents when they were teenagers not many kids get to do that!

U9s Boys Cricket

TM played at home against Monmouth. TM batted and gained 71 which is not a score that you would expect to win a match with. Ceredigs bowling was great! In just one over he took three wickets. This meant the opposition lost 15 runs. The game looked really close with Monmouth taking the lead in the last over putting them 2 points ahead as they faced the last bowl of the last over of the game. Ceredig delivered the last bowl and their batsman hit the ball straight to Bennie Sanzo who had no problem catching it. This cost Monmouth 5 points and therefore the game. Ceredigs great performance earned him a well-deserved Man of the Match. Lets hope the weather forecast is better for next week and we wish for great cricket successes in the future.

Marty is lucky enough to have a wacky friend, a scientist, called Doc, who tells him about his new invention a car that is a time machine. Marty just thinks it is a car. Its only when he drives the car too fast, to escape from some bad men who try to kill the Doc, that he discovers it is a time machine when he is transported to the past. When he realises hes in the past he goes on to have some incredible adventures, scares off the school bullies and makes sure his Mum and Dad fall in love to be sure hes got a future! With help of the Doc from the past he goes.back to the future! I really enjoyed the film and the series so I would give it 3 out of 5 Deloreans!

During the Easter holidays my family and I visited Tiphaine and Tanguy at their house, near Toulouse, in France. On the first day we celebrated Easter. We did an egg hunt in their garden. There were 104 eggs hidden! In France, they dont have an Easter bunny hiding the eggs; they believe that a giant bell flies over and the eggs fall out as it rings. The next day, I went to school with Tiphaine. I met some of her friends, Tara, Enes and Talie. After we had put our coats in the classroom, we went to the school chapel to celebrate Easter. We sang French songs. At lunchtime we had to queue in the canteen to get food it was pasta and meat. In the English lesson, Tiphaine and I were asked to demonstrate an English phone conversation the class loved it. At home time everyone had to wait outside until their parents came and took them away. I really liked going to French school. Tiphaine and Tanguy love their home in France, but they do still miss Tockington.
