Logos

Description: A company/individual approaches you and asks you to design their logo. They leave it up to you to do some research for insight on what type of logo would best communicate their brand. They ask you to design three, completely different, variations for their consideration. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator, Downloaded fonts, Internet Photo references Date: June 7th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator. Process: I decided to do my own business: Jenae Briggs Photography. I came up with three different ideas and figured out how to make them in Illustrator. The camera symbol on the top logo was easy. For the second one, I looked at aperture symbols and then traced one to get the triangles just right. For the third logo I originally only had the film strip and people said it reminded them of movies, so someone suggested I make a film spool. I had to try making it several different ways and I looked up pictures on the internet as a reference, but I think it turned out really well.

Business Card and Letterhead

Description: You are asked to design a new logo and stationery items. Create a new logo, not one that was used in the last project, then design a business card and letterhead. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator Date: June 14th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert Objectives: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Process: I researched photography business cards and found the fonts I wanted to use. I made different sized circles in Illustrator. Then I made clipping masks for both sides of the card. For the watermark on my letterhead draft, I just copied my circle logo and changed the opacity to 5%. After critique in class, I took out the extra circles and copied the circle with the line through it from my letterhead draft for my new business card. I added the kind of teal/aqua color to make my design pop. I aligned the line on the front and back of the business card and made my name bigger. I used the same design for my letter head with the teal/aqua circle and deleted the text from the watermark I had before.

Brochure
Description: Trifold Brochure for Jenae Briggs Photography. Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator Date: July 13th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Process: I used the film strip and the color purple from my logo for the design my brochure in Adobe InDesign. This brought repetition and flow to my design. I found a trifold template for free online to help me know how big to make my panels. I chose photos that I have taken as a photographer to inform the viewer and to create variety. I used alignment on all of my brochure panels to make it look professional and unified. I used contrast on my Front panel with the quote Keep your memories forever by making the word Keep bigger and purple.

Webpage
Date: June 29th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert

Description: A potential employer requests a web page of one of your logos with a description of the design process that demonstrates basic HTML and CSS skills. Programs/Tools Used:Notepad ++, Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS

Objectives: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file. Process: I used one of my logos from the Logo/Stationery project, to feature on my web page. I brought my logo into Adobe Photoshop to Size it so the longest side is 300 500 pixels. I described the process of creating my logo, including the rationale for my color choices, appeal to target audience and design skills that I used. I used NotePad++ to create an appealing page layout with HTML to display the logo and written content prepared. I made sure that I had all of the basic required tags. I included a tag that links to external style sheet. I found and used hex colors to match my logo. I customized the Cascading Style Sheet provided in I-Learn in order to add page formatting that complemented my logo design. I used 262 words in my description on my webpage.

Photo Montage
Description: You are in charge of creating a new and fresh inspirational poster using a composite of images and type. A photo montage involves the blending of two or more images with text. You will create an inspirational montage by using a layer mask to blend images. Programs/Tools Used: Photoshop, Monochromatic Noise filter, Red Photo Filter, Red Gradient layer, Overlay blending mode Date: June 1st, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert Objectives: Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography. Process: I chose the quote I wanted to use. I originally found three of my wedding photos to blend for the montage, but only used two in my final image. The image I didnt end up using had grain and I still wanted that feel so I made a gray background layer and used a monochromatic noise filter (grain) on it. I used a red photo filter. I also made a red gradient layer to get the intense red in the bottom left corner and let it gradually fade into the top right corner. I chose the two fonts I wanted and downloaded one of them from the internet. I made my red text overlay on the montage to help it fall into the background. I put my white text on the very top layer because I wanted pure white.

Imaging
Description: A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using Photoshop. Programs/Tools Used: Photoshop, Black and White Adjustment layer, Hue/ Saturation Adjustment layer, Masks, Camera: Canon Rebel t2i Date: May 24th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert Objectives: Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Process: I took the photo with my camera. I uploaded it into Photoshop and applied a black and white adjustment layer. I masked the layer to only affect the necklace. Then with the white brush on the mask, I brought back the color on one of the circle rings of the necklace. I copied that part of the mask and used it on my hue/saturation adjustment layer to change the circle ring from orange to a teal-like green. I measured the guides on a new document and constrained the proportion on the crop tool to make my image 6x6 inches.

Event Ad
Programs/Tools Used: Microsoft Word, Scanner Date: July 19th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert

Description: A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Objectives: Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word. Process: I scanned the image of the pioneer painting. Then I found a font that made me think of a pioneer. I used colors from the picture for my fonts to create repetition and unity. I put the burgundy colored bar at the bottom to draw attention to the date, time and place. I placed a little clip art hat above my text that I felt added to the theme and did not come off as tacky.

Flier
Description: Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference. Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe InDesign Date: May 11th, 2013 Comm130 Section 1 Brother Eric Lybbert Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact. Process: I first created some sketches of my layout. Then I used my sketch to come up with ideas for this layout in Adobe InDesign. I used two black boxes for contrast and to grab the attention of the viewer. I also made the first letter of each paragraph in the body copy bigger and made it match the title font. I did this to draw the eye to the information and create a combination of contrast and repetition. I left white space and kept my body copy small. I made the date, time and place bigger and had them match the title font because it is important information that the viewer will probably look for. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.
