Montage
Description:
A personalized poster that has been made to with Photoshop and basic usage of masking.

Date:

05/30/2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop CS6

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop Layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I created a document to 8.511. I put a black rectangular shape for the background. I copy and pasted the family image in for the main picture. Using a mask, I faded the top and bottom of the picture into the background. I then placed the words Family on and put the subtitle underneath. I added the hand picture and applied a filter called dry brush. I then applied a mask to it to make it blend with the family image. I enlarged the family picture and moved the text to the bottom. I then found the best placement for the hands and made them opaque to help them blend.

A color full bleed ad to promote the building of a Childrens Discovery Museum in Lehi, Utah; using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word Epson Scanner PDF2JPG.net

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I first found an image in Good Housekeeping of a plate of food. Then I scanned it in on a Epson scanner and deleted the background. I used the green of the vegetables for box shapes. I chose Abadi Mt Condensed Extra Bold for the main font because I like how crisp, clean and bold. I like the oldstyle body font because of how nicely they contrast and it doesnt draw your eye away from the bold body type. This being my first time making a poster in Microsoft Word it all come together rather nicely and wasnt too big of a learning curve to figure everything out.

Canon Powershot Camera Adobe Photoshop CS6

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust the image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturated the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

I took this picture using a Canon Powershot camera. This was my first time using a nicer point and shoot camera and it was simple to figure out. I took this picture of Shain Weeds and a girl he was tutoring on how to take a picture. I then took my image into Photoshop and cropped it to a 66 inch square. I selected the background using the quick select tools, and de-saturated it. I also applied the colored pencil filter to only the background and left the main subject alone.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Adobe InDesign CS6 Images from the web.

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process:

I started this brochure by deciding what layout would work best for the fake company I had chosen. I used a logo I had made previously for this project. Next I found images on the web that went along with an action movie theme. After that was finding the best way to layout everything, that was what took the longest. In the end I went with a simple box design and simple black and white colors to help tie the design together with the logo. It definitely helped with constancy and help it look clean-cut to use those colors.

It is three simple lines to create the simple and then two dots for the eyes. Then I placed the logo in InDesign in a 3.5 in x 2 in document. Last I added the contact information to the card.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Adobe Illustrator CS6 TextWrangler

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder attach as one file.

Process:

This was my first interaction with HTML and CSS stuff. I started by doing a tutorial online that did a step-by-step basics. From there I used a template from my college class and made an html document using TextWrangler. After that I used a logo I had previously made to showcase my new HTML and CSS skills. On the web the colors I used are the same in the logo; which created a nice contrast. Then after I created the layout I put in the copy.

Logos
Description: Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

This was my first interaction with Adobe Illustrator but it was the best program to make a logo so that is what I used. After watching multiple tutorial videos, I started. I used the pen tool to trace a regular image of a gun and bullet to make it an outline in vector points instead of pixels. I then placed the bullet in different positions until it had good flow with the words. After that I edited the text and chose the most pleasing font that helped accentuate the picture. I chose the gray and black with a white background for the color scheme because of the nice contrast they create. The last part was playing with the sizes of the fonts and bullets to make a more dramatic contrast.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Adobe InDesign CS6 Images from class.

Objectives:

Apply the design princples and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

To make this flyer I started by sketching out four potential designs that I could do in Adobe InDesign. I started my flyer by choosing the picture I wanted to use and then created around that particular picture. I first tried a right alignment but the white space was trapped; so I switched to an alignment along the picture. Also to start out I had many different font sizes and all with different kerning. I changed to three different font sizes and all the same kerning which helped my font truly look uniform and all flow well. None of the images are mine and neither is the logo; they were provided by my Comm 130 class.
