Engen Penetration Grade Bitumens

Description Engen Penetration grade bitumens are manufactured from fractional distillation of crude oil. The long residue taken from crude oil distillation process, a mixture of high molecular weight hydrocarbons, is further distilled at reduced pressure in a vacuum distillation column to produce short residue. The short residue is the feedstock used in the manufacture of over ten different grades of bitumens. The viscosity of the short residue is a function of both the origin of the crude oil and the temperature and pressure in the vacuum column during processing. Penetration grade bitumens are specified by the penetration and softening point test. Designation is by penetration range only, e.g. 60/70 pen bitumen has a penetration that ranges from 60 to 70 inclusive and a softening point of 46 to 56. The penetration grade bitumens have a thermoplastic property which causes the material to soften at high temperatures and hardens at low temperatures. This unique tempererature/viscocity relationship is important when determining the performance parameters such as the adhesion, rheology, durability and application temperatures of bitumen. Application The majority of Penetration grade bitumens produced are used in road construction for the production of asphalt pavements with superior properties. 40/50 & 60/70 bitumens are used in the manufacture of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses. 80/100 & 150/200 bitumens are used in spraying and chip applications. Characteristics & Specifications. Engen Penetration grade bitumens are manufactured in accordance with SANS 307 specification and meet the following specification requirements.
