Guidance
After graduation, many of the students of this school will go on to work, others will start off for college. But the problem is what kind of work? which college? It is the object of the Guidance Department to help answer these questions for each student so that as an individual in an adult world, he will occupy himself in the position which will make him most happy, and in which he will use his full potential to contribute towards the betterment of society.

HUMANITIES

English
Discuss your feelings and compare notes with the experts. See how James Baldwin views Civil Rights, and then read Mark Twain's ideas. Discover old China with Pearl Buck. Do you feel the same about your love as did William Shakespeare? Express yourself creativelyall you need is paper, a pen, and an imagination! The English Department provides limitless opportunities for the broadening of opihions and development of individual creativity.

' There were these two people, see? And their names were Adam and Eve, and they started the whole thing.-

Oh, come on! We saw the answers on your shirt sleeve!

When they say to a man who sees with his eyes, 'Hare you seen?' and he says, 'I have seen,' that is the truth."
Brihad-aranyka Upanishad

"Only that knowledge knows which knows the known by the knower."
Krishna Bhagavad-Gita

23

As the immortal Hofstadter would say ...

"I taught you that?"

Grasping the ideas of history takes ONE'S full attention,

24

Ideas and concepts are important in trying to understand the world today. Mr. Roy Esaison illustrates conflicting ideologies existing in the Post World War I period.

Social Studies
Hand in hand with the language barrier is another barrier to peace, and this is the barrier of conflicting ideas. Its removal comes only with the better understanding of heritagesthe why of conflicting ideas. We must understand not only our own cultural and historical background, but the cultural and historical background of every man, for past events shape future thinking. The Social Studies department is dedicated in its role of "peace through understanding."

25

Language
No matter where we look in today's world, there is misunderstandingmisunderstanding which often leads to war. To maintain peace, we must make ourselves understood; we must know how to express ourselves in the languages of other people. With the aid of modern electronic equipment, numerous books, and above all, the dedication of our teachers, keeping peace by better communication has become the responsibility of each individual.

ART

Art
If you want to be free to express yourself, take art. You may paint, sculpt, draw, paste, cut, build, and what you may create is as boundless as your imagination.

Waiting for the signal to begin singing are members of the boys' chorus led by Mrs. Esther Scott.

Mr. Robert Leist becomes a part of music in motion as he conducts the Symphonic Band.

Music
Music is an art too, but good musicianship requires not only creativity but cooperation and teamwork. Choir, band, and orchestra are the unifying forces which bring the musical creativity of hundreds of individuals . together and harness it for the purpose of producing harmonious sounds.

Sometimes, a little milk is good to wash down a meal in Home Economics class.

Pulling out stitches can be frustrating, but the resulting garment is worth the trouble.

Home Economics
Although the world around us changes from day to day, the home remains constant as the basic center of living. The woman is the central figure in her home, and what she does in this position may make a difference in the happiness and well-being of her family. The Home Economics department prepares girls for careers as future wives and mothers still two of the most important careers a woman may fulfill in our modern world.

Industrial Arts
While some forms of art beautify and enhance the world, there are other forms of art which exist for the purpose of practicability. Students enrolled in the Industrial Arts course of our school have broad opportunities to create objects that not only decorate but are useful as well.

Headaches are a necessary evil in every teacher's career.

Protective goggles are a necessary precaution against injury as students learn how to work a lathe in shop class.

Accuracy is important in mechanical drawing.

SCIENCE

Members of the A. P. Chem class show skill in being mad scientists.

46

Annette Ruggeri shows Lorna Pautzke that seriousness of purpose and precision make a difference in a Chem lab.

All I can say at this point is "TRY HARDER."

Science
Many of the gains we have made in our modern world towards an increased standard of living stem from the discoveries made by men before us in the wide and diversified field of science. To continue the upward trend in civilization, more advancements must be made in scientific theory, but to accomplish this, the basic understandings which past generations achieved has been the object of the Science departmentto teach the before-discovered theories, and to guide the student into making discoveries on his own.

47

Mathematics
Mathematics has been called the "core of the universe" and certainly, math has become greatly focused upon in understanding basics in science. The increasing need for accomplished mathematical scientists is now being met through training programs beginning in high schools such as ours where the prodigy as well as the student who simply wants to understand a little more of his world may acquire the most modern and complete education from elementary algebra to the fundamentals of calculus.

Mr. James Morrissey listens attentively to a student's question.

"Well, I could be wrong."

48

Miss Marie Gange shows how to solve equations.

Solving a problem in math often requires a lot of patience, and a lot of paper.

49

Ilona Silver keeps track of her place in the book, while

using the adding machine with skill and speed.

Helping a student learn to use machines is only one of the many tasks of Mr. Julian Afilkes.

How to work the mimeograph machine is one of the many things taught in the business classes.

Business
Each year, as the complex world of business expands, the demand for more and more technical services increases. However, the people who fill these positions must reach an exceptionally high level of proficiency in their work in order to operate and maintain business enterprises successfully. In reaching this caliber of proficiency then, each individual contributes to the business world in its entirety. It has been the job of the Business department to acquaint and train all interested students for important roles as part of the back bone of our technical society.

MR. JOHN RYDER, Director of Athletics.

Physical Education
To the Greeks, the "ideal man" was the fortunate person who possessed not only a sound mind, but a sound body as well. While the rest of the academic departments work on a sound mind, the Physical Education Department concentrates ona sound body. Gym period not only trains for better health, but provides a break in the day in which the frustrations of studying may be let out on the ball.

Library
One of the most satisfying ways in which a person may use his time is in the independent exploration of challenging ideas; and certainly, many new worlds of knowledge may be opened up to the reader of the other materials which the library of this school provides.

Cross Country Team

This was a good year for the cross country team, and some of the members such as Karl De Santos, Austin Galvin and Bob Varsha did an extraordinary job at our home grounds at Sunken Meadow State Park and at away meets. We hope that in future years the "team" will have such a fine crew of good sportsmen.
Team President and Vice President, Austin Galvin and Karl De Santos. Both Karl and Austin made great strides for the team and deserve a lot of credit for a fine job.

Varsity Basketball
This was a very good year for Northport's basketball team as compared to last year's season. Early in this year it looked grim when senior Doug DeGeorge hurt his foot. However, with a good recovery things looked bright again. Many fond and exciting memories can be associated with the tense moments at games against Huntington 64-57, Smithtown 60-58, West Islip 89-82, and "that" Brentwood game. The V for victory should go to the team as an integral unit and its coachMr. Willets. Some great accumulations of points and rebounds belong to Bob Madden, Frank Bologna, Randy Kopke and Jeff and Ken Beytin.

Notes: Col is the column in the graduation program. Photo is the yearbook page. Where spelling differs between the yearbook and graduation program I used the graduation program. Schools generally list the name in the graduation program exactly as shown in their records because sometimes teens use a nickname or a trendy spelling such as Anne instead of Ann. If the school asked students to provide names, relatives attending the graduation would assume name errors were from school carelessness. Also, years later students might regret not having their name correct in the program. On the other hand, high school seniors who prepare yearbooks commonly don't confirm names and spellingsmy surname was misspelled almost every time in my yearbook. Franz Ahrenhold is shown as Frank Ahrenhold in the yearbook. (And mentioned in this note so that name will show up in a search.) My interest is primarily genealogicalJane Reinckens is my first cousin. Accordingly, names are in standard genealogical format: FirstName Middle Names Surname Generational-Suffix, with no punctuation. The exception is Surname (comma-space) FirstName, another common format for searching.
