If you live in, or are schooled in, Greater Forest Lawn you can sign up. Find the program you want to attend and call the number listed below the description. See the map on the last page for Family Place locations.

Programs for Preschool Children with an Adult to Attend


Parent Child Mother Goose Provided by Further Education Society Share rhymes, songs and stories with your children, make friends, and have fun! This is a program for parents and their babies and/or preschool children.This program focuses on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs, and stories together in a relaxed setting. Magic Carpet Ride Provided by CanLearn Society (formerly Calgary Learning Centre) Please join our preschool program for parents and their children aged 3 to 5 years. We will read stories, sing songs, play, learn and get ready for kindergarten. Younger siblings are welcome too! **Please note**: Families already attending the programs do not need to register. Tuesdays, April 9 May 28, 10:00 11:00am Mix it up! Provided by Calgary Family Services Sing, dance, play, get crafty and connect Together parent and child (aged 2 to 6 years welcome) engage in a one-hour play and craft program. First parents learn to engage their children in playful circle time activities and songs that promote attachment lasting approximately one half hour. After a short break, the room will be set up with open ended crafts, and hands-on experiences for parent and child to explore together; the focus of the group is on having fun while connecting with your child through a variety of experiences. Programs for Children and Youth


Home Alone Safely Provided by Families Matter For children aged 9 to 12 years, this program helps determine child readiness for staying home alone for short periods of time. Topics include: stranger awareness, home safety, and first aid. Parents are asked to join in for the last 30 minutes of the session. Call 403-205-5178 to sign up.

Just Frogs! Provided by Outdoors In Slimy and slithery frogs! Your child will be the detective by using his or her senses to explore the characteristics of frogs. Life cycles will also be explored with live tad poles! Call 403-690-7692 to sign up.

Teddy Bear First Aid, for children aged 4 to 8 years Provided by Child Safe Canada This interactive first aid class teaches young children the basics of first aid: checking for safety, calling for help, and caring for injured people. The kids will learn how to sling arms, deal with bleeding, burns, scrapes and choking. Children are very able to learn first aid when presented in a fun, interactive manner. Children will deal with a mock emergency scenario with teddy bears and dolls. The participants will go through the three steps of first aid and apply the required first aid, slings, band-aids, etc. to the stuffed toys and dolls. Tuesday, June 11, 4:00 5:00pm Kids in the Kitchen Provided by Community Neighbourhood Services, East Area Office, City of Calgary Kids in the Kitchen is a hands-on, information packed program for children in Grades 5 & 6, which shows participants they can eat low-cost healthy meals that are easy to make with most ingredients found in any kitchen. The participants prepare their own meals, and then on the final week, they prepare and serve dinner to their guests: family and friends! Call 403-248-0280 to sign up.

Thursday, May 23, 6:00 7:30pm Strangers and Dangers, for children aged 4 to 8 years Provided by Child Safe Canada This one-hour fun-filled workshop teaches children and their parent/caregiver vital personal safety skills. Children learn what to do if theyre lost, and who to seek out if they need assistance, as well as skills for dealing with luring and bribes. The course is fun and interactive and ensures that children retain their new skills and keep SAFE! Call 403-248-0280 to sign up.

Thursday, June 6, 6:00 7:00pm Guitar Skills for Newbies Provided by Aspen Family & Community Network Have you ever imagined learning how to play a guitar? Are you interested in learning some awesome guitar skills? Would you like to be a new Jimi Hendrix or Prince someday? Do you really want to play that new Lumineers or Adele song on a guitar? If you answered yes to any of the above, then this group just might be for you! This program is suitable for any youth between the ages of 13 and 18. Life Skills Provided by Aspen Family and Community Network Teamwork, origami, cooking, t-shirt painting, duct-tape crafts and more.Would you like to build any of these skills or just make new friends? Traditional Aboriginal Arts Program Provided by Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary If you are a student aged 6 to 12 years, and you are interested in learning more about the wonderful world of native art and heritage, come join this inspiring Traditional Aboriginal Art Program. The classes are taught by Gordon Lawlor an artist who has art pieces all over the world and more than thirty years experiences as an artist. You will work with a variety of art mediums. You will have the opportunity to sculpt, paint and sketch while learning about aboriginal traditions. Call 403-796-2203 to sign up.

Thursdays, April 4 June 20, 3:30 5:00pm Mosaic After School Program Provided by Immigrant Services Calgary A free after school program for children aged 6 to 12 years. The main purpose of the program is to provide free supervised after school activities all children are welcome. Children will enjoy regular after school activities that enhance their selfesteem, social engagement and success in school. Wednesdays, April 10 June 26, 3:00 5:30pm Mentoring Programs Provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area These programs are for children and youth aged 6 to 17 years. Adult mentors (Bigs) spend one-to-one time together with a child or youth (Little) doing activities such as making crafts, playing games, learning sports, creating art, chatting and learning new things. After being carefully matched based on personality and shared interests, Bigs and Littles meet once a week. Community-based matches meet for two to five hours in the community where they live, including Greater Forest Lawn. There are a variety of programs available to meet the availability and interests of Bigs and Littles including: Recreation Mentoring, Youth Inclusive Neighbourhoods, Community Based and many more. If you are interested in joining the Mentoring Program, or if you want more information, please call ChiVi and set up an appointment to visit him during his Family Place scheduled meeting times. Mondays to Thursdays, April 8 June 27, 3:00 5:00pm The Sisterhood Provided by Youth Matters, Aspen Family and Community Network The Sisterhood is for girls aged 13 to 16 years. It gives girls a space to connect with peers and talk about whats important to them. Get involved with projects bigger than yourself by volunteering and paying it forward! Fridays, April 12 June 21, 10:00am 12:00pm Learning Club Provided by Calgary Family Services The Learning Club is a FREE 8 week one-on-one homework support program for children ages 5 to 13 years living in the Greater Forest Lawn area. Volunteers will help children in the areas of math, reading, writing and science and parents play an active role communicating the learning needs of their children and ensuring homework is brought to the program. We also offer recreational activities, field trip opportunities and employment help. All our services are free and snacks and transit tickets are available, if necessary. Media and Hip-Hop Project on Anti-Bullying, for Youth aged 14 to 20 years Provided by Greater Forest Lawn Youth Arts Action(YAA) Explore the art of media makingandhow to use ittoendbullying.Delveinto everything from shot composition, lighting, camera work, audio, editing, post-production, and creating an exhibition. Learn the art of spoken word/rap to create impact and share perspectives on the topic. Meet new people, gain volunteer hours, learn new skills, andhave fun!All forFREE. The Greater Forest Lawn Youth Arts Action Group is an initiative of Antyx Community Arts in partnership with the City of CalgaryCommunity Neighbourhood Services,where youth have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of art forms to explore youth-identified topics and issues.This year, youth have chosen the ongoing issue of bullying.Through developing leadership skills with the art of media making and hip-hop, wewill explore this issuewhileworking as part of a team to create and organizeprojects/eventsto showcase work. Youth may choose what role they wish to take on during the project, those interested mainly with media making may commit more of their time towards the media production aspect of the project, and those more interested in hip-hop may choose to focus on developing the audio and style of the project. Programs About Parenting You Can Bring Your Children


Cross Cultural Parenting Program Provided by Calgary Immigrant Womens Association This is a free program open to all parents and grandparents. The aim of this program is to help immigrant parents cope with parenting challenges in a new country and culture. Parents will learn how to connect their cultural values with Canadian expectations in order to help their children succeed. Topics include institutional and social pressures, child discipline, parenting styles and values, effective communication, and child development. Program materials are available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Dinka, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese translations. Free childcare is provided for children 6 months to 6 years old. Programs for Adults Health & Wellness


Making Anger Work for You Provided by Calgary Family Services The goal of this workshop is to help participants challenge their negative thought processes and learn appropriate ways to express their feelings. Often anger is a front for other feelings like sadness, frustration, loneliness or powerlessness. By becoming aware of the underlying emotion, participants can learn to change how they view and describe events. Participants will learn: to think, plan and choose before reacting; to practice new skills through role play; to rediscover how humour can alleviate many of life's stresses; to improve their relationships with co-workers, bosses, friends, children and partners; to challenge themselves and take charge of their emotions in a new way. This group is for individuals over the age of 18. There is a cost for this program, however, subsidies are available. All are welcome, regardless of the ability to pay.
