In a recent case in Oldham, a 16-year-old woman was the centre of a controversy between the Education Department, her father and her husband, for leaving school before she was legally permitted to. Debra Huxley shocked the school and local community when she announced to everybody her unexpected exit from school life. (1) The controversy centred around the question of whose responsibility it was to send her back to school until Easter when she would be legally permitted to leave. In the eyes of the court, she was her fathers property - oops, responsibility and he was fined $ 500 with $ 1000 costs for failing to ensure her attendance at school.
