Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has suggested that the National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) to utiliseAgro Bank to buy agricultural land in the state. This, he said, might save a lot of land with agricultural potential from being snapped up by outside buyers, as well as to further develop such land. Source: Bernama Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has noted that the ministry would continue to focus on efforts to increase fishermen s income and fish output, including encouraging increased activity in aquaculture. Leading shrimp producer, JEFI Aquatech Resources Sdn Bhd, is collaborating with local and foreign experts on aquaculture research and development projects to enhance Malaysias aquaculture industry through biotechnology. The collaborations will be for JEFIs RM375 million integrated shrimp farming project in Penang, which is expected to be fully operational in the next three years. The project consists of a large R&D center, high-productivity hatchery centers, 800-hectare shrimp farm, frozen and dried seafood processing facilities, and a high capacity cold storage warehouse. According to JEFI Group CEO BJ Tan, similar aquatech farms are being started in Kedah, Johor, Pahang and Kelantan. Source: Bernama Entrepreneurs involved in the production of agro-based products have been urged to take advantage of loans and facilities offered by Tekun Nasional to increase the production of halal food products to capture the overseas market that is estimated to be worth RM3 trillion. This was because the Malaysian Halal logo is well accepted, and in considered the most reliable in the whole world, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said. He added that many foreign companies have used Malaysia as a hub to repack their products just to get Malaysia s Halal stamp in order to ease their products to be marketed throughout the world. With regards to Tekun Nasional, a total of RM2.7 billion loans involving 258,676 participants has been recorded. Agricultural entrepreneurs accounted to only 10% of the amount. Source: Bernama Global agricultural production is expected to grow 1.5% a year on average over the coming decade, compared to 2.1% between 2003 and 2012, according to new report published by the OECD and FAO released this week. The report expects prices to remain above historical averages over the medium for both crop and livestock products due to a combination of slower production growth, and stronger demand from non-traditional sectors, such as biofuels. However, the report maintains that price volatility will remain amplified as long as food stocks in major producing and consuming countries remain low. It noted that a repeat of the wide-spread drought in 2012 could raise world prices by 15%-40% on average. Production from developing countries is expected to increase in tandem, with meat production in particular being expected to contribute 80% of growth. Source: Bernama
