SPONSORSHIP PACKET

July 15, 2013 Dear Friends: Twenty years ago, four concerned citizens came together to form the Alabama Poverty Project. They joined with others across the South to study poverty, publicize their findings, teach undergraduates what they had learned, and mobilize public policy to bring about systems change. Today, APP continues that work by sponsoring the Blueprints College Access Initiative, one of the states largest college access programs; leading the service-learning movement; and promoting civic engagement that increases Alabamians knowledge about the causes and impacts of structural, multi-generational poverty and encourages the public to apply that knowledge through service, advocacy, and philanthropy. In celebration of its founding and recognition of the continuing challenges fighting poverty, APP is hosting a 20th anniversary dinner. It will honor its founders by presenting the first Alabama Possible Awards to J. Mason Davis, one of Alabamas longest-serving African American lawyers, and Judge Scott Vowell, who recently retired as the presiding judge of the Jefferson County Circuit Court. As part of the program, Mason and Scott will have a frank conversation about access to justice and what each one of us can do to build a more just Alabama. This is also the night when APP officially unveils its new name: Alabama Possible. The board deliberated and decided that Alabama Possible better reflects the organizations work and deeplyheld value that we have the power to reduce, and one day end, poverty in Alabama. We hope you will join us on Tuesday, August 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Birminghams Woodrow Hall. All proceeds will benefit Alabama Possible-Alabama Poverty Project. Alabama is the sixth poorest state in the country, with 19 percent of our neighbors and an astonishing 28 percent of our kids living in poverty. APP is a nonprofit resource center dedicated to reducing systemic poverty and its root causes across Alabama. APP educates citizens about poverty, motivates colleges and faith-based institutions to engage in poverty-reduction activities, and advocates for fact-based policy decisions statewide. We have provided details of the sponsorship opportunities and benefits in this packet and hope you will join us for this special evening. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact APP Executive Director Kristina Scott at 205.939.1408 or kscott@alabamapossible.org We look forward to working with you, and thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Mobilizing Alabamians to eliminate poverty. www.alabamapossible.org Board of Directors

ABOUT ALABAMA POSSIBLE-ALABAMA POVERTY PROJECT

I n 1993, a group of concerned citizens, including then-Auburn University President Wilford Bailey, Auburn History Professor Emeritus Wayne Flynt, Social Work Pioneer Eulene Hawkins, and Alabama Baptist Convention President Earl Potts decided to take action against poverty in Alabama and formed the Alabama Poverty Project. Today, Alabama Possible - Alabama Poverty Project (APP) is a statewide nonprofit organization that works to reduce systemic poverty and its root causes by inspiring Alabamians to pursue a state in which no individuals quality of life is diminished by poverty. APP disrupts misperceptions, raises public awareness, and engages citizens to reduce poverty and its negative impacts on Alabamas families. Through its programs and services, APP educates Alabamians about poverty, motivates higher- education and faith-based institutions to engage in poverty-reduction activities, and advocates for fact-based policy decisions.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

APPs supporters are committed to leveraging their collective assets to develop creative solutions to reduce poverty. Our services include leadership in poverty education, professional development opportunities, on-site presentations, and the provision of information to its members and community partners. Blueprints College Access Initiative. APPs Blueprints College Access Initiative connects 21st century high school students and their families with helpful resources and relationships so they are equipped to graduate from high school and college career-ready. Blueprints applies a near peer mentoring model in which college students serve as mentors for high school students. This program demystifies the college-going process by connecting high school students with an information-rich network of supportive coaches who help them make structured decisions while navigating the college admissions process successfully. Service-Learning. APP leads the service-learning movement by working with its member campuses to create effective poverty-focused service-learning programs that meet academic and service goals. Citizen Engagement. APPs programs increase Alabamians knowledge about the causes and impacts of structural, multi-generational poverty and encourage citizens to apply that knowledge through service, advocacy, and philanthropy.
