These improvements are part of USCIS' s
ongoing efforts to produce secure documents
and enhance the integrity of the immigration
system. Since 2010, USCIS has redesigned
the Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550),
Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560) and
Employment Authorization Document (Form

ACCIDENTAL BONDING
A woman and man get into a car accident.
Both of their cars are totally demolished, but
amazingly neither one of them is hurt.
After they crawl out of the wreckage, the
woman says, "Wow, look at our cars -- there's
nothing left! This must be a sign from Him that
we should be friends and not try to pin the
blame on each other."
The man replies, "Oh yes, I agree with you
completely."
The woman points to a bottle on the ground
and says, "Somehow this bottle of Scotch from
my back seat didn't break. Surely God wants
us to drink this Scotch and celebrate our good
fortune."
She hands the bottle to the man. The man
nods his head in agreement, opens it, and
chugs about a third of the bottle to calm his
ner ves. The woman t akes t he bot t l e,
immediately puts the cap back on, and hands
it back to the man.
The man asks, "Aren't you having any?"
The woman replies, "No. I think I'll just wait for
the police."

BARK LIKE A DOGMA
A poor minister was having trouble managing
hi s church. The i ncome was pi ti ful , the
plumbi ng rattl ed, the roof leaked, the ai r
conditioning didn't work, and the church didn't
have the funds for any repairs.
The minister got a brilliant idea. He bought a
book about hypnosis, and read it from cover to
cover. At the next service, he took out a watch
and chain, swung it back and forth, and lulled
the congregation into a hypnotic trance. He
said, "I want everybody to walk down the aisle
and put $20 in the plate."
They did, and he had the church's roof fixed
that week. This worked so well that the next
Sunday he decided to do it again. Taking his
watch out, he proclaimed, "I want everybody to
come down the aisle and drop $100 in the
offering plate."
They did, and he got the air conditioning fixed
and the parking lot redone.
His third Sunday, he got to thinking, "I haven't
been paid in a long time. I deserve a little
money."
He started swinging his watch again, and he
thought, "I deserve a lot more than a little bit of
money. I deserve enough to go overseas and
have a cottage on the beach. I deserve a lot
more."
He got so excited about what he was fixing to
receive, that his hands started to sweat and as
the watch slipped from his grip, he yelled:
"Shit!"
It took him two weeks to air out the church.
LUCKY DRIVER
A police officer pulls over a driver and informs
him that he has just won $5,000 in a safety
competition, all because he is wearing his seat
belt.
"What are you going to do with the pri ze
money?" the officer asks.
The man responds, "I guess I'll go to driving
school and get my license."
His wife says, "Officer, don't listen to him. He's
a smart aleck when he's drunk."
The guy in the back seat pops up out from
under the blanket and says, "I knew we
wouldn't get far in this stolen car."
Just then a knock comes from the trunk and a
voice calls out, "Are we over the border yet?"

METAPHYSICAL DOWNSIZING
One day a government worker was digging
through his office drawers when suddenly he
came upon a magic lamp. (Oh, c'mon, I'm sure
there's one buried in your desk too.) Since
he'd heard these jokes before, he knew that
he had to rub the lamp and make the genie
come out. So he rubbed the lamp and -- oh,
surprise -- out popped a genie.
The genie asked, as genies will, What is your
first wish? The government worker thought
about it for a second, then replied, I would like
to be rich! So the genie granted him his wish,
and poof the man was surrounded by piles of
money rivaling the heaps of even Martha
Stewart and Bill Gates.
Since the government worker knew the whole
wish process, the genie didn't even have to
ask for number two before he sai d, My
second wish is to be on an island with beautiful
women surrounding me and obeying my every
command! And poof, he was there.
Then the government worker -- or, as I like to
call him, civil servant -- decided on his third
wish, I don't want to do any work ever again!
and poof -- ubiquitous ironic twist -- he was
back in his office.

they believed, were using religion to serve
their purpose. They believed that their policies
woul d onl y mak e Egyp t a l an d of
backwardness again.
Additionally, Egyptians realized, albeit late,
that the Muslim Brotherhood did not take part
in the initial stages of the revolution against
Mubarak. In the beginni ng, they made i t
explicitly clear that they would not put up a
nominee for presidential elections and that
they would only participate effectively in the
Parliament. They, however, went back on their
promi se, and ri gged the last presidential
election.
Many still cast aspersions on the electoral
success of Mursi and maintain that Ahmed
Shafiq was booted out by external forces.
Today, the Muslim Brotherhood appears to be
more gangster-like from others. Everyday, one
comes across some situation which points out
that they have no national affiliation or loyalty.
Their loyalty and allegiance is only toward their
organization, and they are ready to confront
the army and the Egyptian people.
Interestingly, their chances of staying in power
- according to serious political analysts - will at
best last till the end of Mursi's presidential term
because of their political shortsightedness.
There are no doubts that the Muslim
Brotherhood did deceive the people and tried
to hijack the state to serve their own myopic
vision that has nothing to do with democracy
and peaceful rotation of power.
Given the ground situation, there are several
questions. Will Egypt slide into a state of
anarchy? It all depends on the Egyptian citizen
who has always demonstrated a high degree
of loyalty to his country. The army relies on this
high level of Egyptian nationalism among the
people to avert an internal collapse.
The tug of war between different players in
Egypt that we are witnessing is only aimed at
increasing the bargaining capacity of the two
sides. So far, the army has been in control
despite the tense situation and the Islamists'
friction with the rest of the society. The army is
also aware that some kind of understanding
has to be arrived in the near future, even with
the Muslim Brotherhood. The pact could also
include a new road map and guarantee that
they would not be excluded as a quid pro quo
for the army not to disclose the secrets of the
Muslim Brotherhood
The way the Muslim Brotherhood progresses
in Egypt may well have a bearing on the future
of all Islamic movements in the region. In the
1980s, the Muslim Brotherhood fooled the
youth in Afghanistan, lying to them about
ground realities and thriving on superstition.
Just a few days ago, one of their leaders
claimed that he had a dream in which Prophet
Muhammd (peace be upon him) was touching
the head of Mursi. Anyway, their lies in Egypt
know no boundary.
The Muslim Brotherhood's experiment failed in
Algeria and in Palestine, because it was full of
deception, misinformation and hatred toward
others. What happened in Egypt on June 30 is
a statement of Egyptians' rejection of exclusion
and autocracy.

Will Egypt descend into anarchy?
By: Ali Bluwi
The situation in strife-torn Egypt, according to
intelligence inputs, is headed toward mayhem
with an imminent confrontation between the
Muslim Brotherhood and the army. There are
also indications that the Muslim Brotherhood
has more or less decided to take the army
head on despite the fact that such an option in
risky and could prove to be disastrous.
What is disturbing is that the Israeli intelligence
also has been observing and evaluating the
situation in Egypt and Sinai. In fact, the army
has unveiled a plot hatched by the Muslim
Brotherhood to transform Sinai into a defiant

concerned about the happeni ngs in thei r
country and what they see as attempts to
break up the country and weaken its army.
They are aware of what happened to Iraq and
Syria and how their military power was brought
to near destruction. It is needless to say that
Ousted President Mursi
sectarianism flourished in these two countries.
There were enough indications that the Muslim
Brotherhood incited Egyptians to take to the
streets to what they claimed as restoring
national pride and pan-Arabic identity. This
was seen as a move which was in line with the
Turkish policy, observed by many as a hidden
agenda for the Islamists to transform the
region which would have served Turkish
interests.
There is a general belief that Istanbul has
been trying to restore the glory of Caliphate

reason, there is considerable degree of angst
against the Ameri cans, the Turks and Al

be justified, but they have been supported by
countries which promoted politics of exclusion.

With her thousands of years of civilization,
India can be addressed as "mother of many
religions". Within the beliefs and openness of
minds are many paths that lead to eternal
bliss. Some paths intersect and yet do not
bisect. One such happy communion lies in the
town of Shirdi, Maharashtrathe shrine of
Sai Baba. Hindus and Muslims congregate
here in countless numbers to seek happiness
and solutions to their innumerable challenges
of life. And the problems do not arrive by
segmentation of religion, region or race. An
unmar r i ed daught er , unempl oyed son,
unmovable limbs, unending poverty knock on
doors regardless of whether one is a Muslim or
a Hindu. And here lies the essence of Baba's
message of uni t y and harmony. Baba' s
religious i dentity is neither debatable nor
categorized. Various theories abound and
surround the mental cul-de-sacs of folks who
are limited by their own thinking. Whereas,
Baba has unlimited reach and unshakable
belief amongst his followers.
Call him a yogi or a fakir or a sufi and drape
him in your perceptions of religious cult. Baba
i n hi s smi l i ng si t t i ng post ur e r adi at es
happiness and those who vi sit his shri ne
cascade into lasting benefits of physical,
mental and emotional health. Combining
elements of Hinduism and Islam, Sai Baba
lived in a mosque and gave it the name of
"Dwarakamayi". His tool box defied a
mechanical definition. He uttered "Allah Malik"
and "Sakshat Eshwar" as synonyms of
meaningful life rather than effortless
antonyms of political convenience.
Wikipedia quotes that Sai Baba made eleven
assurances to his devotees:
1. No harm shall befall him, who steps
on the soil of Shirdi.
2. He who comes to my Samadhi, his
sorrow and suffering shall cease.
3. Though I be no more in flesh and
blood, I shall ever protect my devotees.
4. Trust in me and your prayer shall be
answered.
5. Know that my spi ri t i s immortal ,
know this for yourself.
6. Show unto me he who has sought
refuge and has been turned away.
7. In whatever faith men worship me,
even so do I render to them.
8. Not in vain is my promise that I shall
ever lighten your burden.
9. Knock, and the door shall open, ask
and it shall be granted.
10. To hi m who surrenders unto me
totally I shall be ever indebted.
11. Blessed is he who has become one
with me.
Sai Baba advised Muslims to read the Quran
and Hindus to read Ramayan and Bhagavad
Gita. He urged his followers to develop two
important traits of character. Shradda
(devotion to Guru) and Saburi (patience). In a
dollar-crunching world devotees are flocking to
cool their fires of irritation and it is estimated
that 20,000 pilgrims visit every day and on
special occasions the number goes
upto100,000. An unidentified devotee donated
two diamonds valued at Rs. 1.18 crores.

"Besi des post poni ng t he el ect i ons and
removing the government, what could we do
to bring the CPN-Maoist into elections," was
Bimalendra Nidhi's query. The answer lies in a
new agreement among the parties in the next
few months which renews the commitment to
the peace accord signed seven years ago and
gi ves in to some of the Maoist demands
without jeopardizing elections. In the five
mont hs ahead, a bi g t est f or Nepal ' s
peacemakers will be to persuade the splinter
Maoists to contest the November election, and
for the power centers in Kathmandu to make
compromises to that end possible. Conversely,
attempts to isolate and split the Maoist party
carry a risk of a return to levels of violence that
will further destabilize Nepal.

In Nepal, Another Ultra-left Challenge
(continued from previous page)
about what course to adopt.
Dangerous path
The i dea of pat h dependence i s bei ng
deployed by both the Maoist parties to prove
opposite views. For the splinter party, the
current path of the CJ-led dispensation was
deceptive from the start and there is no way it
will lead to a "pro-people" constitution. And
si nce t he CA woul d not pr oduce t he
constitution, what is the point of participating in
it? For its part, the mother party insists that the
current path was necessary to break the
impasse and write a constitution, and that it
cannot be reversed.
The big question, then, is what lies at the end
of the path? In an interview with The Hindu
before his trip to India in April, Prachanda said
that the splinter group will be isolated and
"finished off" i f i t attempts a revol t. Thi s
attitude is buttressed by the conventional
wisdom in Kathmandu that people have no
appetite for another war. It also says that the
insurgency so well that any attempt at revolt by
the splinter will be quickly crushed, and that
India would have no qualms about such an
outcome given that the radical Maoists have
been shrill in criticizing India's role in Nepal.
New Delhi's position, sources say, is to support
the November 19 election and encourage the
splinter Maoists to join the polls. But if the
Ki ran-l ed part y t ri es t o di srupt el ect i on
activities even then, New Delhi feels it must
not be allowed to hold the polls hostage, and
the state must assert its authority.
The spl i nter part y does have di srupt i ve
capacity. A senior official involved in election
preparation estimates that the group has 1,200
indoctrinated and trained former guerrillas who
would have the motivation and capacity to
unleash violence. Others put this number at
2,000.
A pessimistic assessment of the undercurrents
is an escalation of hostilities between the
splinter Maoist party and the republican state,
with an eventual descent into armed struggle.
But there's an "optimistic" reading as well.
According to a well-informed diplomatic
observer, Prachanda is worried that Biplab, the
most dogmatic of the radical Maoists and the
one most likely to revolt, is playing the same
game he played before the 2008 elections - to
oppose polls "under the status quo" and ally
with those seeking proportional representation
- in an attempt to boost his popularity. The
success of this strategy depends on the
parties' willingness to compromise.
Bring them in
Two goals stand out in the current discourse.
While the first, to get a fresh mandate from the
people, gets great attention, the second, the
continuation of the peace process, gets lesser
attention. The only way to achieve both ends is
to immediately make the CPN-Maoist a part of
the political process by remembering the
content and spirit of the 2006 peace accord
between the state and the rebel s, which
remai ns uni mpl ement ed except f or t he
disarmi ng of the Maoi sts. In addition, its
numbers in the dissolved Assembly make the
CPN-Maoist a legitimate actor that has been
wrongfully shunned by the "high level political
mechani sm" cur r ent l y di r ect i ng t he
government.

The CPN-Maoist i s opposed to el ections
"under the status quo." This translates into a
demand for the immediate resignation of the

At a standstill
By: Mowahid Hussain Shah
The other day, Shahi d Mahmood, former
Paki stan test cri cketer and a pi oneer i n
community activism in the tri-state region of
the northeast corridor of United States, sent an
email vividly illustrated with graphics depicting
the Musli m world at a standstill , mired in
sloganeering, while the rest of the world during
the last 100 years has marched on through
motor cars, airplanes, space flights and space
satellites. Shahid, today, spends most of his
waking hours in prayerful meditation. It is a
clarion wake-up call to fill the moral, spiritual
and intellectual void in the Muslim world.
It is in stark contradiction to the mighty legacy
of path-breaking learning in the Muslim world.
Right in the European heartland of Budapest,
Hungary, is a shrine of the Sufi saint Gul Baba.
It takes a steep climb to get there, but is worth
it to see the rose-covered tomb of the holy
man, who was decl ared pat ron sai nt of
Budapest dur i ng t he 16t h cent ur y. I n
Andaluca, Spain, is the great 12th century
Al-Mowahid mosque at Seville. In the mid-13th
century, the city was captured and the mosque
was Christianized as a cathedral. In it lies
buried Christopher Columbus, the discoverer
of America
The sci enti fic achi evements of medi eval
Muslims are too numerous and staggering to
be enumerated here. But when coffee is drunk
in the West, it is not often realized that it made
its way first via Vienna when the Ottoman
Turks made their final bid in 1683 to capture
Vienna.
The current 'leadership' is devoid of inspiration
and direction, steeped as it is in passi ve
victimhood, defeatism, grabbing of wealth and
preservation of perks and power. To expect
leadership, then from those who have none, is
absurd. They are incapable of raising the bar.
Tar i q and Babar accompl i shed gr eat
conquest s wi th a smal l band of i ntentl y
committed and motivated fighters. Baba Farid
Ganjshakar and Baba Bulleh Shah conquered
the hearts of huge swaths of the populace with
sheer piety and simplicity. They did so without
materiel resource.
Today, the resources are overflowing and so is
the size of the Ummah. But all this has not put
a dent in the occupation of Palestine and
Kashmi r nor curbed I sl amophobi a. In a
memor abl e scene f r om t he Punj abi
blockbuster "Maula Jutt" impeccably written by
Nasir Adeeb, a shackled jail inmate, Noori
Nutt, peerlessly portrayed by Mustafa Qureshi,
accosts the burly jail superintendent with the
putdown taunt that "despite your huge size,
your voice is quite tiny and squeaky." This can
be said with equal relevance to the 1.5 billion
Muslim community.
Yet, despite pitiful results, the ruling oligarchy
considers itself over-smart when the evidence
suggests crushi ng i neptness. When gri t,
endurance and foresight are needed, they,
i nst ead, have squander ed t he nat i onal
energies into the futile quagmire of venality
and vendetta. Even the finest formal education
has not removed the anxieties and complexes
of a defeatist mindset, nor has it instilled an
abi di ng sense of i nt egr i t y. Of t en one
encounters the rationale of surrender in that
"there is no choice." As the Arab upsurge
demonstrates, for too long, the oligarchy has
enjoyed a free ride; now some of them have
paid and are paying the price.
To make its mark now in the international
arena, Muslims have to show that they are
twi ce as good as thei r cont emporari es.
Mohammad Ali showed it in America during
the 60s and the 70s. Now, t he bearded
Hashim Amla of South Africa has stamped his
cl ass on and off the cri cket field without
compromising his Islamic convictions. There
has been an accel er at i ng sl i ppage of
st andards. Ashraf Mumtaz, a respected
journalist narrated in The Nation a horror story
of his Umrah journey on PIA from Lahore to
Medina. In it, he cited foul smelling toilets,
intolerably hot temperature inside the plane
and shoddy service. Similar, too, is the case of
Pakistan cricket, which recently has disgraced
itself in South Africa and in England, breaking
the hearts of millions of their country folks.
Both PIA and Pakistan cricket were once a
source of joy and pride.
The stat us quo sui ts the ol i garchy who,
through sheer weight of wealth, control the
keys to the kingdom and, thereby, act as
pliable proxies for vested interests by fanning
fissiparous flames. They have kept the gates
of intellectual inquiry and of moral audit closed.
They may appear st r ong, but t hey ar e
inherently vulnerable because they are wrong.
Can t he Musl i m worl d st and up and be
counted to face its real foes, while they are
themselves being kept busy and entrapped in
sui ci dal squabbl i ng? Hate, paranoi a and
falsehood has a cannibalizing impact. The
focus remains on ceremonial aspects of faith
and not on its vibrant moral core. By wrangling
over non-issues, the influential are doing
exactly what the foes want them to do. And in
doing so, they are keeping the Muslim world at
a standstill.
