NEWS: JAZZ RADIO LISTINGS: APRIL 1992

BBC RADIO 2 [88-90.2 FM] continues its epic retrospective of fabulous Frank in THE SOUNDS OF SINATRA (Sat 4-5pm). JAZZ PARADE (Mon-Fri night 12.05-12.35am) has sessions by The Dave Shephard Trio (6th Apr), Norma Winston, Jeff Klein & Phil Lee (8th), The Keith Nichols Blue Four (13th), The Tommy Chase Quartet (15th), Anne Hampton Calloway (17th), The Rhythm Aces (20th), The Septet (22nd), Denise Larence (27th) and The Mike Carr Trio (29th). Two concert recordings from last year's EBU Jazz Festival in Finalnd: The Bobby Wellins Quartet (24th) and Jarmo Hoogendijk & Ben Van Dem Dungen (1st May). Brian Davies talks about his recent 'Be-Bop In Britain' competition (14th). Dave Gelly (Sat night 12.05-12.35am) appraises the careers of torch singer RUTH ETTING (4th April) and LOUIS JORDAN (11th). THE ARTS PROGRAMME (Fri/Sat/Sun 10pm-midnight) includes a live set from Manchester's Helen Watson (10th), a look at the careers of George & Ira Gershwin (12th) and reports on The British Jazz Awards (24th). Sheridan Morley interviews TONY BENNETT (Mon 20th 8-9pm). TOO MARVELLOUS FOR WORDS celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Richard Whiting (Wed 22nd 8-9pm). STEVE RACE (Sat 3-4pm), although ostensibly a showcase for The BBC Big Band, always features jazz and is worth a listen. BBC RADIO 3 [90.2-92.4 FM] presents PHANTOM NAVIGATIONS (Fri 6.307pm, repeated Thu 11-11.30pm), a three-part evaluation by Ben Watson of Weather Report's career, starting 3rd April. MONDAY CONCERT (Mon 1011.30pm) features Mike Gibbs & John Scofield (6th April) and The Louis Sclavis Quartet (20th). DJANGO REINHARDT (Fri 6.30-7pm) is a six-part appreciation by Max Harrison, starting 24th Apr. BBC WORLD SERVICE [648 AM & SW] goes to Expo '92 for GUITAR LEGENDS IN SEVILLE (Mon 11.15-11.45pm, repeated Tue 7.30-8am) with a tribute to Miles Davis from George Benson, John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell, plus a duet by Stanley Clarke and Paco de Lucia (20/21st Apr). There's also a blues night featuring BB King, Robert Cray, Albert Collins and Bo Diddley (13/14th). BBC RADIO DERBY [94.2, 95.3, 104.5 FM], LEICESTER [104.9 FM], LINCOLNSHIRE [94.9 FM] & NOTTINGHAM [95.5, 103.8 FM] celebrate the twentieth anniversary of JAZZ INCORPORATED (Thu 7-9pm) on 16th Apr with a special edition by regular host Alex. JAZZ FM [London 102.2 FM] has lost appalling ex-'Radio Two' DJ Adrian Love and reintroduced brilliant R&B fan Peter Young into daytime, alongside new recruit Bob Stewart, ex-'Radio Luxembourg'. The weekday line-up is: 6am BOB STEWART, 10am PETER YOUNG, 2pm STEVE COLLINS, 6pm HELEN MAYHEW, 10pm STEVE EDWARDS, 2am NIGHT TRAIN. Two new presenters are being signed to cover weekends. Featured artists over TRIPLE PLAY WEEKENDS are Ella Fitzgerald (4/5th Apr), Donald Fagen (11/12th), Van Morrison (18/19th) and BB King (25/26th). THE MARTINI HOUR (Sun 34pm) from Ronnie Scott's showcases The Alan Skidmore Quartet & Cayenne (5th Apr) and The Ronnie Scott Quintet (12th).

FESTIVAL RADIO [Brighton 100.4 FM] celebrates its third year on-air 27th Apr to 24th May, coinciding with The Brighton Festival. Guest presenters include Wilbur Wilberforce, Gilles Peterson, Russ Dewbury, Baz Fe Jazz and The Young Disciples' Femi & Marco. Jazz treats are: Tomek playing salsa (Sat 13pm), Alan Sage with fusion (Sat 10-12pm), John Styles with highlights of The Jazz Festival (Sun night 12-2am) and Russ & Baz (Wed & Sat 6.30-8pm). Info: 0273-621856. THE WORLD'S GREATEST MUSIC STATION [Peterborough 1332 AM] launches 14th Apr, replacing the simulcast of Hereward Radio's FM service. AT THE JAZZ BAND BALL (Sat 6-10pm) is presented by Harry Giltrap, who promises "big bands, vocalists and traditional jazz of all kinds."
