A Mother who walked in Lumen Fidei

Msgr. Alex Vadakumthala
o p e Francis has published his first Encyclical letter on faith: Lumen Fidei . In his characteristic simplicity and humility the Pontiff said that this new document The Light of Faith, released on June 29, 2013, four months after his election, is meant to supplement what Pope Benedict XVI had written in his encyclical letters on charity and hope. He further acknowledges his predecessors effort, saying: For this I am deeply grateful to him, and as his brother in Christ I have taken up his fine work and added a few con-tributions of my own. A media comment on this, paraphrasing Chesterton was: What Benedict stored, Francis scatters! There are some precious jewels of thoughts and reflections

that Pope Francis scatters, for us to pick up. In the opening paragraph itself we read about the great gift that Jesus brought for us: the light of Faith. Pope Francis writes: Those who believe, see; they see with a light that illumines their entire journey, for it comes from the risen Christ, the morning star which never sets (n. 1). In the history of the Church we come across some great saints and luminaries who were thrown into deep darkness, stark tragedies and painful situations, but come out through their firm faith to an experience of a divine splendor. And, they remain as great models for us, pilgrims in the same lifes journey. Servant of God, Mother Eliswa, foundress of TOCD (Tertius Ordo Carmelitarum Discalceatorum) and its first Superior General, was one such pioneer. Her deep faith strengthened her and her companions. Her total trust motivated her to move forward in (Contd...page5 )

An Unsung Heroine of Renaissance

It was in the last decade of the Nineteenth century that Swami Vivekananda called Kerala a Lunatic asylum. But within less than a century the whole world was talking about Kerala the rolemodel State. When Vivekananda visited Kerala in the 1890s, the State was steeped in social inequities and moral degradation. Caste hegemony lorded over everything in ridiculous dimension and the condition of women was pathetic. Even the mere sight of the so called untouchables or the outcaste Hindus was considered sinful as it could pollute those of the higher castes. Those poor folks were not allowed into temples. Use of public roads and other public facilities such as wells and ponds were prohibited. Education secular or religious, was the monopoly right of higher castes. Knowledge is power was the obvious reason. Women too were kept off from formal education as patriarchy wanted them always powerless. But Kerala has changed drastically, emerging as Gods Own Country in every sense. Though poor by the standards of per capita income, industrialization or agricultural production, Kerala is now a socio-political and economic marvel, a subject of study and research. Keralas achievements in the quality of life is comparable to the advanced countries of the world. Servant of God Mother Eliswas life and mission has made significant contributions to it directly and indirectly. It is indeed an important component of the Christian heritage of our land, Kerala in particular. The foundation of Kerala renaissance was laid by the Latin Catholic mission that began to decisively impact this land from the 15th century. Canons passed in the historic Synod of Diamper (1599) condemning the evils of casteism and decreeding equal property rights for daughters, are heroic even by present day standards. Even those who condemn this synod for their own reasons, are unable to point out even a single canon that unacceptable! The pre-Diamper Christians had a casual approach towards marriage as it was the case in the medieval Kerala Society and they did not consider matrimony as a sacrament. Many Christians did co-habit with concubines publicly. Child marriage and polygamy were also widely practiced by them. The Synod of Diamper proclaimed matrimony a sacrament and stipulated that it shall be performed with utmost sanctity, in the presence of a priest and in the church. The Synod asserted that nothing but death could dissolve the sacrament of matrimony. The synod doctrine of the sacrament of marriage consisted of sixteen decrees. The Synod observed that a great number of Christians were married at nine or ten or even below and it decreed 14 as the age for boys to get married. For girls it was at least 12 years or attainment of puberty. Polygamy was very much in vogue among Kerala Christians and it was observed that this was at times done with the license of the Church. Parish priests were urged to make a detailed enquiry and initiate measures of rectification. They were empowered even to seek help from the office of inquisition. The Synod decreed that every parish should maintain a marriage register where the vicar had to record the names of the bride and the groom with day, date month and year details. Names of two witnesses were also to be entered. It was also stipulated that these registers should be periodically inspected by prelates during pastoral visits. Restoration of the sanctity of matrimony and thus that of the family was the launching pad of Keralas renaissance. The decree against untouchability, and granting equal right to the girl child in the fathers property were instrumental in augmenting it. But it was indeed a very slow process. Yet a steady and irreversible one, gaining momentum in the Nineteenth century. Kerala was blessed with several renaissance leaders in the Nineteenth century and all of them have been impacted by and extensively borrowed from the Catholic legacy of the State, beginning with the arrival of Latin missionaries and particularly the great Synod of Diamper. Servant of God Mother Eliswa Vakayil (1832-1913), Keralas first Christian woman sanyasini and the foundress of the first womens religious congregation was indeed a revolutionary prophetess and a renaissance leader by every right. She was a unique fruition of the Catholic legacy of this land. The torch bearer of feminine possibilities in Christian spirituality has also left pioneering and lasting contributions in the social, cultural and educational spheres of the State which her spiritual daughters today have literally taken to the ends of the earth. Renaissance and development are meaningless if women are not empowered, their dignity recognized and honoured. Mother Eliswa is the first Christian woman pioneer of Keralas renaissance and her life and mission have touched every sphere of women empowerment be it spiritual, educational or economic. Kerala is the only State in India where women outnumber men. Consecrated life for women and education for girls were two path-breaking initiatives from Mother Eliswa. It is reported that during the Portuguese period (1498-1663) there was a convent of Augustinian sisters. But they were not indigenous and disappeared during the fanatically Calvinistic Dutch regime. Even in the early part of the 20th century women were considered servile and incompetent. They were to be seen rather than heard when questions of religion were discussed. In the patriarchal joint family women were considered as possessions of husbands rather than persons and members of the family. One of the interesting results of Indian Sociological studies is that, as the families improve, they demonstrate new economic and social status by withdrawing their womenfolk in the public domain. It is in this background one should evaluate the heroism of Mother Eliswa. Eliswa, it is testified that, even from her childhood she dared to express kindness to the so called untouchables working in her ancestral home, never missing a chance in helping the poor and the needy. In the Nineteenth century, there were schools and seminaries for boys in Kerala, but no such training centers for girls. She founded Keralas perhaps Indias, first convent school and boarding house and orphanage for girls. The Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly, under whose spiritual care was entrusted the entire Catholic community of the State and the neighbouring areas, irrespective of Rite, commissioned the TOCD sisters with the responsibility of looking after the education of women, by an order dated July20, 1868. Arts, crafts, Maths, cooking, tailoring handicrafts, house management, language, meditation, catechism and music were taught systematically in the school. A salient feature of Mother Eliswas mission is the familyfocus and the emphasis on integral formation of girls. Teaching girls and women rosary-making and other handicrafts paved the way for their economic empowerment and self respect enhancement. Those with intellectual honesty can never fail to see here the seeds of Kudumba Shree and Jana Shree selfhelp projects that have now almost ensured the ordinary Malayalee womens economic independence. Widowhood was widely considered a curse until recently. It should be remembered that Mother Eliswas grace-filled married life with Vakayil Vareed lasted barely for four years. When she was widowed she was the mother of a one and a half year old girl. How she transcended the limitations of widowhood is again worthy of a serious study. Servant of God Mother Eliswas heroic and saintly life can be summarized as St. Ignatius Layola does his Spiritual Exercises in four phases. Diformata reformare, Reformata conformare, Conformata confirmare, Confirmata transformare. That is: Reforming the deformed, Conforming the reformed, Confirming the conformed and Transforming the confirmed. But sadly she is an unsung and at times un heard heroine of Kerala renaissance, a victim of inter rite politics, a victim of the rigid and selfish patriarchal mindset that transcends regions and religions. In his Wednesday audience on April3,2013 when Pope Francis underlined the fundamental lead role of women in the Gospels, the patriarchal mindset of the world was visibly shaken. It should be remembered that the anti-woman attitude was at its peak in the Nineteenth century Kerala and it continued till the middle of the next century. No wonder, much of what Mother Eliswa did for the Church and the society have been blacked out and insensitively attributed to others. In this case men! But ultimately truth alone triumphs. The death centenary of Servant of God Mother Eliswa should enable us to ensure the triumph of Truth. The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, is happy to know that the Congregation of Teresian Carmelites is observing the death centenary of Mother Eliswa and a souvenir is being brought out on this occasion. The President extends his warm greetings and felicitations to all those associated with the Congregation of Teresian Carmelites and sends his best wishes for the future endeavours of the Congregation. Venu Rajamony Press Secretary to the President

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Ps 107:1 It is with deep joy and gratitude to God that I send this message to the Superior General CTC and the members of the Congregation of Teresian Carmelites as the Congregation celebrates the Death Centenary of Foundress, Servant of God Mother Eliswa. A journey in the core of Mother Eliswas life shows that she was a simple, extraordinarily courageous and spirited nun who lived a hidden life in the strict enclosure of a convent. She teaches us the ways and means to be inflamed in our lives with perfect and deep love of God and loving compassion for the humanity. On this historic occasion, I pray that in imitation of your Foundress you may continue to honour Christ by loving and serving Him in the poorest, weakest and most suffering people. Hearty congratulations to Sr. Liza, CTC, the Superior General and the members of the Congregation of Teresian Carmelites on this joyful occasion. In Lumen Fidei in paragraph 35, Pope Francis tells the touching story of the Christmas magi, who were led to Bethlehem by the star (cf. Mt 2:1-12), as the star is a sign of Gods patience with our eyes which need to grow accustomed to his brightness. Religious man is a wayfarer; he must be ready to let himself be led, to come out of himself and to find the God of perpetual surprises. This respect on Gods part for our human eyes shows us that when we draw near to God, our human lights are not dissolved in the immensity of his light, as a star is engulfed by the dawn, but shine all the more brightly the closer they approach the primordial fire, like a mirror which reflects light. Mother Eliswa is a true wayfarer of faith. She was married at a tender age of just sixteen, but lost her beloved husband when her little girl child was just one and half years old. Going against the normal custom of remarriage, she decided to spend her time and energy in the pursuit of faith discerning the plan God that was in store for her. The papal document Lumen Fidei tells us: Once the flame of faith dies out, all other lights begin to dim. The light of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence We come to see that faith does not dwell in shadow and gloom; it is a light for our darkness (p. 4). In the same way, Mother Eliswa in order to be liberated from the shadow and gloom tried to follow faithfully and be enslaved in that light. It is that light that Dante, in the Divine Comedy, describes as a spark, which then becomes a burning flame and like a heavenly star within me glimmers. After she lost her husband in 1851, Mother Eliswa encountered a new life of severe struggle. But,

In drawing near to the suffering, they were certainly not able to eliminate all their pain or to explain every evil. Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and suffices for the journey (n. 57). With these absorbing thoughts from Lumen Fidei, let us now come back to the reflection on the faith response of Mother Eliswa. In her quest for meaning for life, she realized the need to perceive the community dimension of her faith. She understood that faith becomes truly meaningful and alive only if it is confronted with the realities of the social milieu around and adequately responded with deeds of charity and love. For her the abject poverty of her people, pathetic plight of the widows, lack of proper education, especially of the women, and the dehumanizing social customs of her time were serious concerns. The thatched house or panambu-madom where they started their religious life on February 13, 1866, slowly developed into a thirteen-room convent, where one room was converted into a class room (the first convent school of the state!), another a boarding house for girls (edukumdat), etc. There the poor illiterate women were educated and empowered. In an era when women were forbidden to go to schools, Mother Eliswa was a pioneer to bring a social change through education. She became a mediator of light! In darkness she lit a lamp to show new steps for their journey! It was Seneca who said: If I do not burn, if you do not burn, how can the shadows become light? Servant of God, Mother Eliswa experienced the light of faith deep within, and through her life tried to dispel the darkness around her. Truly she is a Mother who walked in the Lumen fidei, and inspires us to do the same.

A CANDLE LIGHTED FOR ETERNITY

for the next fifteen years she confronts her struggles by constantly contemplating on the divine plan and her unique destiny in the social milieu in which she is. But in the moments of silence and struggle, God speaks to her. Pope Francis gives the poignant example of Abraham, our father in faith in Lumen Fidei: Something disturbing takes place in Abrahams life: God speaks to him; he reveals himself as a God who speaks and calls his name. Faith is linked to hearing. Abraham does not see God, but hears his voice. Thus, faith takes on a personal aspect (n. 8). The encyclical gives the example of the great Gothic cathedrals. Architecturally in these gothic structures light comes down from heaven by passing through windows depicting the history of salvation. Gods light comes to us through the account of his selfrevelation, and thus becomes capable of illuminating our passage through time (n. 12). Mother Eliswa too experienced this consoling light of faith from above through her long hours of meditation and prayer at Kalapura in the lonely barn house, even in the hub of anguish and afflictions2. In the midst of suffering and pain, faith provides us with strength and courage. In Dostoevskys The Idiot , Prince Myskin sees a painting by Hans Holbein depicting Christ dead in the tomb and says: Looking at that painting might cause one to lose his faith. The painting is a gruesome portrayal of the destructive effects of death on Christs body. Yet it is precisely in contemplating Jesus death that faith grows stronger and receives a dazzling light. In the same way, Mother Eliswa, from her personal tragedy caused due to the sad demise of her beloved husband, rather than losing her faith, she receives a dazzling hope from the light of faith through prayer and silence. Saint Augustine, commenting on the account of the woman suffering from hemorrhage who touched Jesus and was cured (cf. Lk 8:45-46), says: To touch him with our hearts: that is what it means to believe. Adapting Saint Augustines commentary, Pope Francis explains further: The crowd presses in on Jesus, but they do not reach him with the personal touch of faith, which apprehends the mystery that he is the Son who reveals the Father. Only when we are configured to Jesus do we receive the eyes needed to see him (n. 31). Like the suffering woman of the Gospel, Mother Eliswa touched the Lord with her heart and began to be configured herself to Christ. This helped her to travel on a new path of total commitment through a life of consecration. This configuration to Christ that Mother Eliswa experienced was not an individual, personal encounter of faith, rather she tried to see it in the context of the community around, considering particularly the evils and deprivations in the social milieu in which she lived. The judicious support and prudent spiritual guidance she received from the Italian Carmelite missionary, Fr. Leopold Beccaro, OCD and Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara helped her to perceive a new dimension of her experience of faith. The Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly, Archbishop Bernadine Baccinelli gave it the ecclesiastical approval and offered his blessings to her to start a religious life in a community, which was truly a fulfillment of his long cherished dream. Lumen Fidei beautifully explains the community dimension of the individuals faith experience, as it says: Faith is not simply an individual decision which takes place in the depths of the believers heart, nor a completely private relationship between the I of the believer and the divine Thou, between an autonomous subject and God. By its very nature, faith is open to the We of the Church; it always takes place within her communion We can respond in the singular I believe only because we are part of a greater fellowship, only because we also say We believe (n.39). Christian faith is truly lived in the context of a community in authentic fellowship of its members (n. 39). Chapter four of Light of Fidei illustrates where this faith is lived out: in society and in the family. Pope Francis says, faith becomes a light capable of illumining all our relationships in society. With a critique on the present day interpretation on the concept of equality and fraternity, the Pontiff continues: Modernity sought to build a universal brotherhood based on equality, yet we gradually came to realize that this brotherhood, lacking a reference to a common Father as its ultimate foundation, cannot endure. The Pope then concludes, We need to return to the true basis of brotherhood (n. 54). Pope Francis profoundly connects the aforementioned two aspects of faith further to the response of the true believer to the sufferings of fellow human beings in the society. How many men and women of faith have found mediators of light in those who suffer! So it was with Saint Francis of Assisi and the leper, or with Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her poor.
