6.1 Inner Bracket
6.1.4 Vertical Stiffeners

This section provides the static strength analysis of the Vertical Stiffeners of the Inner Bracket.

The stiffeners are represented in the FEM by shell elements, the thickness of which matches that of the
drawing (M57457605). Fringe plots of critical Von Mises stress and axial stress (parallel to the Spar
Attachment Webs) are obtained using PATRAN results. These plots provide applied stress distributions
for both strength and stability checks of the stiffener.

The strength check is based on the Von Mises Failure Criterion.

The stability check is based on an analysis method using ref [23], Data Sheet 80035 (approved per ref
[14]) in conjunction with ref [24], which is an Airbus method for obtaining the coefficient of rotational
restraint provided by the Spar Attachment Webs. The effects of plasticity are accounted for in
accordance with ref [22], 36.2.6, which covers the local instability of a flange subject to uniform
compressive stress.

Material properties used are 'B' basis, L Direction for plate thickness between 160mm and 180mm in
accordance with Table 4.1-1. The properties are used in conjunction with thermal knockdown factors
per Table 4.1-2 and the plasticity correction is based on the f vs. f/E
t
curve provided in Figure 4.1-1.

An examination of Figure 6.1.4-9 indicates that the peak stress of 720 MPa at Vertical Stiffener No. 1 is
not representative because of the location at the stiffener radius, the thickness of which is not
represented in the FEM.
Therefore, for analysis purposes it is considered reasonable to use the stress at the edge of the radius.

Table 6.1.4-31: Summary of Reserve Factors - Stability Check

Table 6.1.4-31 does not show results for the Crash Separation case. The Crash Separation case has
not been considered for the stability checks of the stiffeners. The reasoning for this is that from
Figure 6.1.4-18, it is clear that the forward portion of the stiffeners is in tension and as such the
stiffeners will most likely not be subject to instability.

As stated on p. 5.1-1, only a positive Crash Separation case is considered, in accordance with ECM
6118 and Ref [1].
