The crystal fresh air, the shady forest paths and the
cool climate invite the tourists to go hiking in Batak
Mountain. The region is a real paradise for the anglers.
It is rich in dams/“Batak” Dam, “Goliam Beglik” dam,
“Shiroka poliana” dam and “Beglika” dam/, which are the
biggest in our country and full with different species of fish.
Widely practiced is also the hunting. There are
excellent facilities offered in the reserves for big game
hunting of deer, wild boar, bear and wolf.
The large number of archeological finds in the area
suggests that the city was a medieval religious center of the
Rhodope Mountains. Around Batak city is a circular forma-

The Destination of Cigov chark, Batak Lake:

The unique situation of Cigov chark makes it an ideal
tourist place during all seasons. It is a perfect place
for those, who travel by car. In the summer the lake-
side of the Batak dam attracts the camping fans. Water
ski, water wheels, jets and boats furrow the smooth
surface of the dam, which occupies a territory of 22
square kilometers.

gave this name when he was living on bulgarian soil.

B. C. Greeks had been settling and formed colonies:

/Varna/, Kruni /Balchik/.
Kruni is the first name of the town of Balchik and it means
“mine”, “source”.

In the III-rd century B. C. the sea threw out on the shore

a statue of Dionysius and the town was called
Dionysopolis. A temple of Dionysius was built in the
center of the town and natives used to bow down before
Dionysius and Demetra – the god of the wine and the
goddess of the fruitfulness.
In Roman times there was built a big stronghold with
underground labyrinths. It survived till VI-th century A. C.
Remains could be seen in the new district of the town.

“Balchik” – either from the word “baldjikei” – “sweet
village” or “balyk” – “fish”.

Overview
