Cypermethrin - a synthetic pyrethroid

Cypermethrin has become one of the most important insecticides in wide-scale use. It has been said that "no pesticide is perfect, but the pyrethroids come close.

EDITORIAL

Welcome to PAWPRINT Number 22

hate to be the bearer of bad news but after a couple of years of cheap crude oil, a strengthening dollar and an oversupply of many industrial chemicals, the party is finally over. Be prepared for significant price rises and shortages of raw materials generally. Ethylene based chemicals in particular are going up in price and some commodity surfactants are now the most expensive that I have ever seen them in my 17 years of dealing in them. Some of the Nonyl Phenol based products have risen as much as 50% in US Dollar terms alone in the past few months. However, we will continue to do our best to keep up supply to our customers and to

limit the increases in price. We hope the cycle eventually turns and things become plentiful again in the market. We have also spent a lot of time and effort over the past year registering a number of new pesticides and insecticides to add to our range. Some of them are covered in this issue. Its been quite a while since our last issue of Pawprint so read on to see what else we have been up to.

DETERGENT CORNER
Here are some formulations based on some of our Specialty Surfactants. Tigerfax 164 is a propylene oxide capped biodegradable surfactant which can be the major component of rinse aids or formulated into commercial automatic dishwashing detergent as below. effective anionic surfactant and an excellent Hydrotrope allowing the incorporation of glycol ethers, ethanolamines, alkaline salts and nonionic surfactants into a single formulation.

Diflubenzuron
Diflubenzuron is a halogenated benzoylphenyl urea, an effective stomach and contact insecticide acting by inhibition of chitin synthesis and so interfering with the formation of the cuticle. It has no systemic activity in plants, and does not penetrate plant tissue, hence sucking insects are generally unaffected, forming the basis of its selectivity. All chitin-synthesizing organisms are sensitive to Diflubenzuron. Diflubenzuron may be formulated as a wettable powder, oil based dispersible concentrate, or a suspension concentrate. Aquasol and Dispersol

For many years now we have represented Chemrez pigment dispersions. We stock over 50 grades, both in a water/glycol medium and in a solvent/resin system. There has been a move in recent years for paint formulators to colour their products with a pre-dispersed pigment rather than trying to grind in pigments either using ball mills, sand mills or by high-speed dispersion techniques. We also stock ready to use standard colours such as Brunswick Green and Mountain Blue. Ask Bruce or Rex for a colour card or pricing.

Take a Bitter Route to Better Safety

Denatonium Benzoate is perhaps the bitterest compound known to man. It can be added to products in very low rates to render the product unpalatable. Examples of products where it can find application are pesticides, industrial alcohol, antifreeze, snail baits, toiletries, cleaners, polishes and cosmetics. The addition of Denatonium Benzoate to any product does not change its physical and chemical properties, except imparting a bitter taste. Denatonium Benzoate available ex stock in 1kg packs. Bioallethrin Gains APVMA Registration

Earlier this year Tiger Chemicals achieved registration from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicine Authority for a new source of the active ingredient Bioallethrin. Bioallethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. Because of its very rapid contact action, it has particular application in household situations. The compounds vapour pressure also makes it ideal for use in aerosols, mosquito coils and electric thermal mats. In these applications, the active ingredient dosage is 0.2% - 0.3%.
