COURSE DESCRIPTION 6th Grade Science will explore the world by using a problem solving approach. Students will deepen their critical thinking and research skills to establish a stronger understanding of the concepts of Physical Science. We will use a variety of methods to study Physical Science, such as lab activities, collaborative working groups, worksheets, bookwork, essays and presentations. This course explores the following content units:
First Trimester Unit 1: Scientific Inquiry and Experimental Design: Investigational Design and Implementation; Research; Data Collection and Analysis. Unit 2: Properties of Matter and Measurement: Chemical and Physical Properties; Behavior of Matter in Solid, Liquid and Gaseous Forms; Measurement of Matter. Second Trimester Unit 3: Atoms and Elements: Properties of Elements: Atomic Models; Periodic Table of Elements Unit 4: Interactions of Matter: Mixtures, Chemical Bonding; reactions Third Trimester Unit 5: Energy and Motion: Kinetic and Potential Energy; Transformation and Conservation of Energy; Mechanical, Electrical, Radiant, Thermal, Chemical, and Nuclear Energy; Waves; Distance and Time; Speed and Velocity; Gravity; Newtons Laws; Friction. Integrated Content: Metric System; Making Measurements Using Tools, Scientific

Literacy, Non-Fiction Reading Comprehension. Experimental Design, Safety, and Nature of Science Concepts.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Students are expected to conduct themselves in a Responsible, Respectful and Safe manner. Responsible: Students must be on time and prepared for the class. In addition, all students are expected to participate in class activities.

Respectful: Students are expected to be kind and courteous. Follow all community obligations set forth in student handbook and classroom.
Consequences include (depending on severity) use of verbal warning, detention, quiet zone, Office Referral. Unsafe behavior during investigations will result in students removal from lab until guardians are contacted, and student is able to demonstrate safe behavior.

Safe: Students must be in control of themselves, physically, verbally and emotionally in order to maintain a safe environment. REQUIRED MATERIALS

HOMEWORK AND TESTS When homework is assigned, it will be due the following day. Any work not turned in will be penalized 5 points for every day it is late. Work will not be accepted after one week. If a student is absent it is the students responsibility to ask for the assignments missed during their absence. Students will have however many days they are absent to make up and turn in their work missed during their absence. A science notebook will be kept for all notes and lab work. Notes from class will be written in the students handwriting and must be kept upto-date and brought to class everyday, including on days tests are administered. Notebooks will be turned in periodically and will constitute part of students grade.

GRADING SCALE
90-100=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D 59 and below=F

Extra Help:
I am available for extra help on mornings and lunch by appointment. Students may also request a pass during study hall. Calling a friend can also be a great first step if you have trouble with an assignment.
