Dear Irmo Middle Students, Parents, and Guardians: On behalf of the students and staff of Irmo Middle School,

I would like to welcome you to the 2013-2014 school year! Our theme this year is: i AM #IrmoSTRONGI Can Explore, Discover, Create As a school, we have worked extremely hard preparing for students, teachers and parents to have a highly successful year. We are truly appreciative of your continued confidence in Irmo Middle, and we are dedicated to serving the educational needs of all students and families in an exemplary manner. This year is going to be brimming with excitement and adventure, as we launch the International Academic Magnet (iAM) @ Irmo Middle, An Expeditionary Learning School. This school wide magnet will expose students to the critical concepts of globalization and cultural diversity, and will challenge students through engagement in international and cultural projects in all courses. We believe that students who possess an international focus are better prepared to compete in an ever-changing, interconnected global society. Enrollment in the International Academic Magnet (iAM) will prepare students for both professional and civic roles in a globalized marketplace, where success demands the ability to compete, connect, and cooperate on an international scale. When our students return to school on August 20 th, we will have the world-class opportunity to expose them to the intricacies of what it means to be a connected global citizen. We will accomplish this through a school wide curricular focus on six themes throughout the course of the year (Technology/Hyperconnectivity, Global Education, International Diversity, World Leadership, Global Economy, and Social Justice/Injustice). Using these themes as lenses to explore standards based curriculum, we will engage our students in a year-long exploration of what it means to be "globally connected" - a concept that we believe is integral for students to become college and career ready. As a staff, we will work collaboratively to maximize students' potential and push them (via challenging learning opportunities) to excel academically, socially, and behaviorally. To be successful, we truly need your help. Research shows that when students have high levels of parental involvement and support, their performance substantially increases. Collaboration with your child's teachers remains one of the main ingredients to an ensuring quality learning experience. There are many ways in which you can participate in your childs learning experiences. Becoming a member of our PTO, serving on/attending School Improvement Council meetings, volunteering your time to assist with various activities are just a few things that you can do to make a difference in the lives of all International Academic Magnet students.
