Assignment

Assignment (10%) Guidelines UECM3253 Applied Nonparametric Statistics

Instructions:
1) This assignment contributes 10% (10 marks) of the total assessment of this course. Each part of the assignment carries different marks. 2) Student is required to submit their assignment report to the lecturer on or before 5.00pm, 2nd August 2013 (Friday of week 10). 3) Student can use any statistical software (such as SPSS, R, Minitab, S-Plus or Excel) to analyse the data. The assignment report should type out using Microsoft Word or Latex. 4) Student should not wait for the lecturer to cover certain topics in the syllabus. They should study and understand the methods applied in the assignment before the lectures. Student is advised to begin their assignment as early as possible. 5) If the content of the assignment (fully or partially) were copied, duplicated or translated from other sources or other persons works, it will be considered as cheating case, and hence no mark will be given to this assignment. 6) This mini project is a group work. Each group contains three students. A group of two or four students is allowed for exceptional cases, prior to lecturer approval. 7) This assignment consists of three (3) parts. All parts must be answered. 8) ONE (1) additional mark will be added to the total assignment scores if the students use any nonparametric procedure that has not been discussed in the lecture. However, this exercise is subjected to the maximum marks of 10% stated in clause (1) of the guidelines. 9) Provide all your data sets in appendix.

Part A (Fix problem, fix method) Select one problem from the Case Study List in WBLE. Analyze the data given in your selected problem based on the stated objective(s) by using a) A suitable nonparametric procedure b) A corresponding parametric test (assuming that the underlying assumptions are fulfilled) Compare and discuss your results. Note: (i) Students should consider the second nonparametric procedure if the corresponding parametric test is not available. (ii) Students are required to formulate their own hypotheses if the objectives are not stated in the case study. (iii) Student can manipulate the given data to a suitable format before analyze them. Part B (Fix problem, free method) Choose one, two or more books/articles written in English, Malay or Mandarin by the same author or different authors. Each group is required to analyse and identify whether the given book/article(s) are written by the same author or different authors. Students have to use at least TWO nonparametric procedures they acquired from this course to analyse the extracted data.
Steps: 1) Select book/article(s) 2) Define and obtain the random data from the selected book/article(s) 3) Choose the appropriate nonparametric procedures and check the assumptions. 4) Analyze the data using the selected nonparametric procedures. 5) Discuss your results.

Assignment

Part C (Free problem, free method) Choose any topic from a real problem. Define your own objectives (or develop your own hypotheses) and analyze the data using at least TWO nonparametric procedures. The (primary) data must be collected by students themselves and not copied from other sources.

Below are the guidelines to conduct the study: 1) Choose a problem/topic and set the title. 3) Set the objectives/hypotheses of the study. 4) Discuss your methodology, including data collection (population, sample size, how to collect data etc.), what are the methods used to analyse the data. 5) Check the assumptions and analyse the data using nonparametric procedures stated in step (4) above. 6) Discuss your results.

Report presentation and Marking scheme

The assignment report must contain the following information: Cover page: Subject code and name, semester and year of study, lecturers name, group members name and student ID. Part A: Title of the study State the objective/hypothesis. (1 mark) Nonparametric procedure: checking assumptions and analyse data. (3 marks) Parametric test: analyse data. (3 marks) Analysis and Discussion. (1 mark)

[Total mark: 8] Part B: Title of the study Formulate the objectives or hypotheses of study. (1 mark) Methodology (2 marks): how to collect the required data from the book/article(s) and what are the nonparametric procedures used. Analysis/ Discussion of the results (4 marks): show all necessary working steps. Discussion and Conclusion (2 marks) [Total mark: 9]
Part C: Title of the study. (1 mark) Formulate the objectives or hypotheses of study. (1 mark) Methodology (3 marks): define population and sample, how to collect random data and what are the nonparametric procedures used. Analysis/ Discussion of the results (6 marks): show all necessary working steps. Discussion and Conclusion (2 marks) [Total mark: 13]

[Assignment mark = (obtained mark from part A + part B + part C) / 3 + additional marks]
