The Revised Code of Conduct

In my estimation I believe that all codes, rules, and regulations needs to be updated on a quarterly base; per se government regulations, fraud, security breeches and extortion that takes place underground on the black market. My train of thought concerning Googles code of conduct hinges on their ability to implement sustainable practices into their corporation. After careful analysis of their entire code of conduct I have concluded that is has been drafted from an internal perspective; and not from an outside vendor perspective. In one context a shareholder would be considered an outside vendor but then again you have to consider the underlining of a public message. Although, it may look credible to outside sources another reality is at work within its walls. I definitely have some thoughts concerning revisions for Googles code of ethics at the basic level. If you can consider that they have been around for some 15 years with 9 of those years being a publicly traded company; then you can begin to realize the opportunities that have presented themselves to sufficiently draft a competent code of ethics. Google has 8 different sections of rules that govern their ethical codes; including serve our users, respect each other, avoid conflicts of interest and the preservation of confidentiality ect. Although, I agree with their entire code of ethics I would however like to recommend that more of an emphasis be placed upon the microcosm of an ecological paradigm. Google has now created a platform in which it can spearhead its voice to produce effective change all around the world. The reason for a shift to this ecological paradigm is that the world is demanding that we use fewer resources in order to do more producing. As a global internet company the concept is that they dont have to worry about it; but I just think that it should be represented in their code of ethics based upon what others may do when they are not at work. I recommend that Google builds an innovative

education based hub that is able to provide training programs and initiatives in Social Responsibility and Sustainable Communities. As a student in this program youll have the opportunity to conduct an action research projects to understand issues relevant to social justice and sustainability and identify possible solutions. As Google grows in capacity its ability to shape and persuade a planet to practice sustainability; this concept will become a hallmark staple to their growth and development as a small planet. Over the years Google has done a wonderful job of outlining its policies and practices towards how it should be governed. The code of ethics is very detailed and attempts to cover every area it can within its company and those who do business with its company. Digital business in the 21st century will render proponents of an interconnected global society. Even now as Google operates all around the world more and more emphasis in the future will be tailored toward customer service, sustainability initiatives, spiritually based practices, and mobile technologies. Throughout the centuries mankind has tried to incorporate a sense of ethical and moral codes into their framework of living. If we were to delve into a biblical frame of reference we can see that at Mount Sinai when Moses received the 10 commandments (which were a set of biblical principles relating to ethics and worship); he too was implementing a code of conduct. But, the startling thing that has baffled me over my lifetime is how these tried and true commandments have never changed. When we speak of certain revisions and codes of conducts that govern corporation life; how is it that these codes have to keep being updated? With emphasis on the changing times, globalization, emerging markets, new innovative ideas, and mobile technologies; we can see the need for a revised code of ethics daily. A code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the responsibilities of or proper practices for an individual, party or organization. Related concepts include ethical codes and honor codes (Wikipedia). As

I researched Google, AT&T and Booz Allen Hamilton (IT Consulting Firm); I found one stark difference in the way their code of ethics was set up between each of them. Each had a conceptual framework of reference for their codes of conduct; in which were based on the size of their company, the markets in which they serve, and the agreements that sought to protects their interests. Obviously, as a company grows and becomes more profitable it has to implement new measures and means to keep its practices safe and sound. Even as my revision for Google hinged on becoming a more sustainably based and ecologically sound organization; still doesnt constitute that fact that a code of ethical framework isnt always in revision mode. To say that Google needs to do something better or implement a different system would say that they are not growing; and a great company always has its sights set on expanding and growing with the times. Through my observation of the Google Corporation I do believe they have a bright future; and are positioning themselves to take advantage of the opportunities that are at hand. One thing we must not forget is that despite the codes of conduct that are set in place; there is still those who insist on following by their own sets of rules and thus sometimes initiates conflict from within.
