A Nonprofit's Role in Disaster Presenter: Linda Trilling 2 3:15 p.m.

A taste of Disaster 101 will be highlighted to understand the need for Non Profits to respond. The importance of a Continuity of Operation Plan should a disaster affect the agency in any capacity will be discussed with a short exercise. North East Illinois Community Organizations Active in Disasters which is a humanitarian association that may be active in all phases of disasters will be introduced. Members consist of nonprofits, faith based and government agencies. How a nonprofit who does not have a disaster response initiative will be answered.

Every year, professionals donate over $15 billion in pro bono services in a variety of fields; ranging from marketing and legal help to strategic planning resources. In a saturated fundraising market where many organizations struggle to bring in new funds, pro bono is a cost-free tool that every nonprofit can use to realize their full potential and diversify the resources supporting their organizational work. Informed by ten years of learning on the delivery of high-impact pro bono resources to nonprofits, Taproot Foundations Powered by Pro Bono program helps organizations acquire the best practices, tools and knowledge needed to leverage pro bono in strengthening their organization and fulfilling their mission. This interactive workshop will serve as a pro bono primer, comprising an overview of: its history, what distinguishes pro bono from traditional volunteering, the impact it can have and strategies for successfully utilizing pro bono support.

Join in a discussion on the changing landscape of rural communities and status of volunteerism in rural areas. Perspectives and commonalities will be shared from the 2012 Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) study on the impact of volunteerism in rural Minnesota; Rural Minnesota Journal on Rural Volunteers: A Vital Force on Fertile Ground by MAVA members Elizabeth Ellis and Heather Thormodson and MAVA staff Katie Bull and Mary Quirk.

Building a Board for Impact and Engagement Presenter: Tom Okarma

Successful boards with actively engaged directors just dont happen. They have to be builtand sustained. Nonprofit agencies that successfully impact their community are ones led by thoughtfully built boards whose directors have been strategically recruited and who understand their individual roles and what is expected of them. There are many tools a nonprofit can use to build or strengthen its board. In this workshop, we will discuss how successful nonprofits build and sustain their successful boards. At the end of this session, attendees will: 1) understand the steps to building a board strategically, 2) receive tips on leading and managing the board effectively, and 3) obtain tools to build a board that fits their vision and mission.
