FALLS AWARENESS WEEK 17-21 JUNE 2013 FALLS AWARENESS BINGO GAMES

The problem of falls in the elderly As you may be aware falls represent a serious problem for older people. Around 30% of over 65s will fall every year, increasing to 50% in those aged over 80. Age UKs Falls Awareness Week runs every year in June and local events are held around the country to raise awareness of the risk of falls, as well as the simple interventions that can prevent them. As a member of the Falls and Fractures Alliance, Falls Assist UK is committed to reducing falls and hip fractures in the elderly. Creating awareness about falls prevention is one way we aim to achieve this goal. Falls and Feet This years theme is healthy feet. Falls Awareness Week is encouraging older people to put their Best Foot Forward by keeping feet healthy to help prevent falls in later life. This includes tips on how to look after their foot health; from buying well-fitting shoes and having foot checks to taking regular exercise to stretch and strengthen toes and ankles. Keeping feet healthy is fundamental to maintaining mobility and independence. As we get older, were much more likely to suffer from foot conditions and complaints, such as bunions and stiffness in toe joints and ankles. We may also lose some of the sensation in our feet. These problems, along with the foot pain they can cause, all affect our balance and walking which often leads to falls. Studies have also shown that some types of footwear and going barefoot indoors can also contribute to falling. Older people should be advised to check their feet regularly and speak to their GP, podiatrist or chiropodist if they notice any problems, have any reduction in foot sensation, or develop foot pain. This message is especially important when it comes to pain, which is often regarded as part of getting old and therefore ignored. Following a foot care routine can further help reduce the risk of falls by preventing some of the conditions that can cause pain and problems with balance. This includes washing and drying feet daily to prevent infections, applying moisturizer to keep skin healthy, cutting toenails regularly and seeing a podiatrist.

Bingo Playing Cards with falls prevention themes that are recreational and at the same time help educate the players on how to prevent falls. These cards can be played under the supervision of a carer/activity coordinator in small groups and is fun and engaging. They can be printed on any printer (colour or black and white) on A4 sized papers and if needed laminated for permanent use. They are also provided free of charge to the user. If you have friends and colleagues who would benefit from this recreational and educational activity during the Falls Awareness Week and thereafter please send them a copy and encourage them to participate in raising awareness on falls prevention. Instructions: Maximum number of participants is 10 - More are allowed, but please warn players that you could have multiple winners and remember to print more bingo boards. This is a picture bingo game. First distribute the bingo boards to participants. The play leader must then shuffle the set of big pictures and explain to the players that in this version of picture bingo game you will first tell the participants which letter on the bingo board (under the heading B I N G O) to look under and then read the clue to the picture (which is written under each picture). For example "UNDER G on the bingo board Drinking too much of this can make you light headed and dizzy, and should be avoided." The answer is alcohol and the participants must look in the pictures (on their Bingo Boards) for clues for alcohol. Once a participant has identified the clue and the picture you may show them the big picture on the card and discuss why taking alcohol can lead to falls. The idea is to have the participants try and guess which picture is correct based upon the clue, before you show them the picture making it engaging and fun to play.
