Syllabus Workshop Descriptions

Strategies for English Language Learners (ELLs) will be taught in one week long training session. This workshop is targeted for teachers who teach 3rd-5th grades. Teachers will use a variety of instructional tools to learn how to incorporate strategies for ELLs. Teachers will use SMART Notebook, Audacity, Voice Thread, ToonDoo, Wikispaces and Microsoft Word throughout this workshop. Below is a brief description of each session. Activating Prior Knowledge for English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers: This workshop will teach teachers the importance of activating prior knowledge for ELLs. Teachers will be shown examples of how they can do this in language arts, writing, science, social studies and math using SMART Notebook. Throughout the workshop teachers will learn and use the Think Pair Share Strategy; this can then be used with the ELL students in their classrooms. Teachers will then use SMART Notebook to create lessons that they might use in their class based on what they learned during this session. Vocabulary and English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers: This workshop will teach teachers different ways to use vocabulary with ELLs. Teachers will be shown examples of how they can do this in language arts, writing, science, social studies and math using SMART Notebook and Audacity. Teachers will learn how to use Word Walls with ELL students. Teachers will then use SMART Notebook, audacity, and Voice Thread to create vocabulary lists for their students. Using Graphic Organizers and other visuals with English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers: This workshop will demonstrate the importance of using Graphic Organizers and other visual tools with ELL students. Participants will be shown examples of how they can do this in language arts, writing, science, social studies and math using SMART Notebook, Microsoft Word and ToonDoo. Teachers will then have some time to create their own graphic organizers and visuals to use in their classroom with their ELL students. Modeling for English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers: This workshop will teach teachers the importance of modeling for ELLs. Teachers will be shown examples of how they can do this in language arts, writing, science, social studies and math using SMART Notebook and Voice Thread. Teachers will then use SMART Notebook and Voice Thread to create lessons that they might use in their class based on what they learned during this session.

Using Guided Interaction with English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers: This workshop will teach teachers the importance of using guided interaction for ELLs. Participants will be shown examples of how they can do this in language arts, writing, science, social studies and math using SMART Notebook and Wikispaces. Participants will learn how to structure lessons so students can work together to understand what they learn. Teachers will then use SMART Notebook and Wikispaces to create resources that they might use in their class based on what they learned during this session.

Workshop Goals/Objectives
Activating Prior Knowledge for English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers Participants will identify why activating prior knowledge for ELLs is important. Participants will give examples of how to activate prior Knowledge in different subjects using SMART Notebook. Participants will identify and use the Think Pair Share strategy. Participants will develop part of a lesson that they might use in their classroom that aims to activate prior knowledge for ELLs Vocabulary and English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers Participants will identify vocabulary words for their grade level. Participants will create words walls to use with units in their classrooms. Participants will generate audio clips using Audacity for their students. Participants will develop part of a lesson that they might use in their classroom that uses best practices for vocabulary with ELLs. Using Graphic Organizers and other visuals with English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers Participants will explain why using visual aids with ELLs is important. Participants will create visuals to use in their classroom with ELL students using ToonDoo. Participants will develop part of a lesson that they might use in their classroom that aims to activate prior knowledge for ELLs using Microsoft Word. Participants will design lesson plans with visuals using SMART Notebook. Modeling for English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers Participants will identify why modeling for ELLs is important. Participants will use Voice Thread to model language use for ELL students. Participants will create a SMART Notebook lesson with proper modeling.

Using Guided Interaction with English Language Learners (ELLs) 3-5 grade teachers Participants will outline the structure of a lesson for ELLs. Participants will discuss why interaction is important for ELL students. Participants will create a Wikispaces classroom for their students to use. Participants will design a lesson in SMART Notebook that demonstrates proper modeling for their ELL students. Workshop Materials

Additional Information
Participants will work on activities during each workshop that they can take back with them and use in the classrooms with their students. Workshops will have dedicated time for participants to put into practice what they learn.

Evaluation
Participants will complete evaluations at the end of each training session that come from the school district.
