New materials are being prepared for use in this years Vacation Bible Schools.

They consists of either 5 or 10 letters for use each day and one for the closing
program. Each one will be mailed directly to you from Brazil to be opened and

read on the appropriate day. Some pictures and other suitable material also will be

necessary to request the materials well in advance. You may write to Gary Meyers

directly in Brazil via air mail or c/o Durwood Miller, their agent. When writing
please send the dates and lenght of the VBS. All offerings given this year will be put
into a special car fund.

Dear Friends,

We are happy to be able to share with you again about our activities of the last couple of months that have been so busy for everyone. In Nov. and Dec. we got together with the other missionary families to celebrate the two big days of Thanksgiving and Christmas. On Thanks giving everyone came to our house. There were over 35 of us altogether. This is one of the real blessings of working with
several other families. When we have to

be away from family and friends in the States, fellowship with other mission aries means a great deal. On Nov. 22nd we were especially

:happy to welcome Lanny Maddux and

Lanny and Pat Maddux his family to Belem. It is always a happy

occasion when someone new arrives to

work with us, but we especially happy to have Lanny and Pat here as we were close friends at O.B.C. Lanny is the
brother of Norman Maddux who has

been here two years and has been respons ible for setting up and running the printshop. Lanny and Pat have begun their Portuguese study and will be helping at the printshop and in the churches.
Since the first of October we have

had the opportunity of meeting once a week with three upper class couples for an English conversational class. This has given us a further opening into the upper class, with whom little work has previous ly been done. Although it is not a Bible study class, we still have opportunities to witness. Pray with us that we will be able to use this opportunity to introduce them
to Jesus.

We want to say a special thank you

Special offerings can be sent to Durwood Miller designated for our furlough fund. We have thought of many of you during this past holiday season and have enjoyed hearing from many of you. We pray that through this new year you may find many rich blessings living and work ing for our Lord Jesus.

PRAYER CORNER

"For the Scripture says, 'Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.' This includes everyone, for there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles;
God is the same Lord of all, and richly blesses all who call on Him as the Scripture says, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'" "But how can they call on Him, if they have not believed? And how can

they hear, if the message is not preached? And how can the message be preach ed, if the messengers are not sent out? As the Scripture says, 'How wonderful is the coming of those who bring good news!'" (Rom. 10:11-15; Good News
for Modern Man)

The Good News is for everyone! But Paul asks "How?", and the answer
is up to each of us today. God's plan for "How" it is to be done is for men to

do it. Let's pray that this year our most important concern will be doing all we
can to tell others the message that they might believe and call on the Lord.
ARE YOU MOVING?

If so, please send us your new address. The post office returns your newsletter to us with the new address, but it costs extra to get it, and you miss an issue. Send us your new address before you move and you won't have to miss an issue, and will help lower mailing costs.

Dear Friends,

How fast time has gone since we wrote in our last newsletter. How surprised I was
to look at the calendar this week and discover that Saturday is the day to mail

everything to the printer. It seems we have been extra busy lately with many things demanding our time. We also have received many abundant blessings in our Lord
Jesus.

Right after Christmas I left Kathy and Stephen at home and made the 38 hour bus
ride down the Belem-Brazilia highway to attend the annual missionary conference

in Anapolis near Brazilia. The conference was from Dec. 30 to Jan. 3. Bro. Lewis
Foster of Cincinnati Bible Seminary was the guest speaker this year. His three lectures

each day prompted everyone to do some soul-searching, and inspired us to gohome

with more enthusiasm to work harder for the Lord. The close fellowship with the

other missionaries was a great blessing as well. For several years a fellowship with
non-instrumental Church of Christ missionaries from the Sao Paulo and Belo

Horizonte areas has been developing and this year the fellowship grew closer yet.

have just set new Bible School attendance records the last two weeks. Two weeks

to divide up classes and the building is really getting full. Now they are getting ready to build a baptistry in their building. They haven't had one before and have always had to go to another place and most of the people haven't been able to go and watch the baptisms. Since it is needed about every week they are going to build one of their

Still, though, while there has been continued growth in Agulha, Satan has been work ing hard on the church that meets in another area. Norman Maddux has been teach ing and working with some Christians in an area near his home called Pato Macho. A few months ago a man in the area offered to build a building for them on a lot by his house. They happily accepted and moved in the small building when it was finished recently. A few weeks ago David Bayless helped Norman hold an evangel istic meeting. The church has been slowly growing. Now they have found out that the man who had built the building for them to meet in is dishonest. He attempted to cheat them out of a large sum of money and tried to turn the building and church
over to a denominational church near there. The Christians have moved out and are

now meeting in one of their homes like they had been before. Satan is trying hard
to hinder the church in this new area, but so far he hasn't succeeded.

THE GOSPEL LAG

No. 3

Can it really be that the gospel is falling behind? That there is a slowdown in Evangelism? Aren't there more preachers and missionaries and Bible College students
than ever before? Is there really a lag in world evangelism?

If the goal is to reach the world in our generation, then we are obviously in a period of slowdown. For example, the Restoration Movement has about 5,000,000 members, which is about 272% of the total U.S. population. In 1900, there were "only" 3,000,000 members, but at that time it was 3% of the total U.S. population. And it is the same story around the world. Christianity is in a minority and the per centage is shrinking each year. And this trend doesn't seem to be reversing. Are we really consistently growing every year as we would like to believe? Are we just fooling ourselves? Have we become too content with things as

they are? Could it be that we have too long held to the idea of "quality rather
than quantity"?

Isn't the fault in us? The Gospel is the same force today as it was in the first century! It is our job to win the world, or at least to make sure that the gospel gets a hearing. Let's get on with the job. "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day; the night comes, when no man can work." (John 9:4)

Dear Friend,

Greetings to all of you in the name of our Lord who can do all things!
We are very sad to have to write to you about the death of Scot Mason, the son of Dale and Huey Mason. Scot became seriously ill on the 16th of April and was taken to the hospital. He died on April 21st. Scot was 1 yr. and 4 months old. He was the Mason's only son. They have two older daughters. It was, of course, a very sad time for all of the missionaries, but we are now praying that the Lord will use this personal loss for gain in His kingdom. Dale has been working during the last year with a group of business and professional men who belong to the local gun club. He has become very good friends with them, and most of them visited in the hospital and attended the funeral. Dale and Huey had many opportunities to witness of their faith and we pray that this may help to influence Dale's Brazilian friends to accept Jesus. Dale is soon beginning a Bible discussion group with some of them. Please pray with us for these people. We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28) During March we also had unexpected problems. Norman and Patti Maddux had to return to the States unexpectedly. Patti had been bothered with a low grade fever for several months and it was beginning to bother her more. Several Brazilian doctors hadn't been able to find the source of the problem and so they decided on the advice of their doctors to return and have the problem taken c^e of in the^tates.

After extensivetests at the University of Missouri Hospital, they found that she has a
pre-diabetic condition also accompanied by a minor inner ear problem. They had planned to be home for furlough during 1972, but now they will stay in the States until the end of this year instead. Although Norman was in charge of the printshop, we have all learned enough how to do things that the work there is being hindered very little. We are looking forward, though, to the Madduxes' return. In addition to the Madduxes, Franscico and Sue Leite left on furlough in April, and Allen and Darenda Kisner returned to the States the first of May ending their
two vear internship.

During the last several months I have been going with Paul Lanham to Castanhal, a small city about an hour's drive from Belem. Paul has just recently begun a new preaching point there. We go every Saturday afternoon and evening. There are seven Christians now and there are about 25 people studying the Bible correspondence course. I go with Paul visiting, help deliver correspondence lessons and help some times with the meeting in the evening. Going every Saturday has really helped my Portuguese, too. I have lots of opportunities to put into practice what we learn in class. Besides going to Castanhal, I have recently preached a couple of times in English at the Agulha church in Icoaraci where we live. A few months ago the missionaries bought a 16 mm movie projector. We have borrowed several films to show in the churches, to youth groups, at youth retreats, to Dale's "shooting" friends, etc. When a film is being shown large crowds always

gather to watch, so this is an excellent way of reaching the Brazilian people with the Gospel. We are looking forward to having enough money to buy some of the Moody Science films in Portuguese and some films on the life of Christ as soon as funds come in for this project. Kathy and I are presently planning to return to the States for furlough the enc of this year. We plan to spend the holiday with our families and then begin traveling and visiting our supporting churches in January. If you are interested in having ui come to visit at your church, you can write directly to us in Brazil. We plan to re turn to Brazil in late summer of 1972. We will be announcing more details later. It is hard to believe that Stephen is two years old already. He has grown flfrt fast and is getting so big. He is getting excited about having a new baby brother or sister. We visited some friends who have just had a baby and Stephen said he would
like to have a little baby like theirs. He really loves babies and it looks like Mama is going to have a good little helper. We are getting anxious for the baby to come.

Kathy especially will be glad for July to get here. We pray that you may all grow in Christ and find the joys of a deeper life with
Him. Your fellow workers. . .

PRAYER CORNER

"Is there any one of you who is sick? He should call the church elders, who will prayfor him andpouroilonhim in the name of the Lord. This prayer,
made in faith will save the sick man; the Lord will restore him to health, and the sins he has committed will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one

another, and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayerof a righteous man has a powerful effect. Elijah was the same kind of person that we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the
land for three and a half years. Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops." (James 5:14-18, Good News For
Modern Man.)

How big are our prayers? Do wereally believe that anything we ask God in faith, he will do? Or do we set a limit on our prayers? For example, we pray for a sick person to be healed, but aren't there certain diseases and sick
nesses of which we really doubt that they will be healed? Are we bold enough

to pray like Elijah and ask for what seems to be the impossible? Do wedare pray, for example, for the conversion of the whole city or town where we live?
Or for the conversion of a whole country? Jesus said, "And whatever you ask

in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith." (Mt. 21:22)

The new "Christian Information Center" in Castanhal that we wrote about in the

last newsletter has been very successful. New students continue to enroll in the corre spondence course each week. And the number of dropouts has been very low. Most of

the people are progressing through the 10 lesson course rapidly and there are 15 to 20 who have already received their diplomas or soon will. We have also opened up another
stand to distribute the course in a market in Belem, but it is too soon to give sny report

y n August, I began teaching a three lesson study to Antonio Pires and his family. Antonio's family is the main Christian family in Castanhal. He has a son 12 years old and 4 daughters 15-25 years old, but only he and his wife are Christians. Antonio, his wife, his son, and three of the daughters have completed the study and the other daughter has two lessons yet to go. Two of the daughters have indicated that they probably will accept Christ soon.
This study is what we plan to use in follow-up of correspondence course graduates. We plan to make a personal visit to every graduate who is not already affiliated with some protestant church. We are offering each one a personal Bible study and enrolling them in a second correspondence course that is more comprehensive than the first.

ith so little time left before our visit to the States we have been trying to get as much practice as possible with Portuguese. Such things as teaching the study in Castanhal and preaching once at the Marambaia church in Belem have been a big help. The best way to learn is to speak and use the language as much as we can.

(_yine of the biggest activities planned for the near future is a special tract distribu
tion at Cirio. Cirio is the biggest religious festival of the year. Because it is only held in

Belem, it attracts literally hundreds of thousands of people. The biggest event of C(rio
is the procession on Sunday morning (October 10th this year), when the idol is paraded through the streets. We are printing a special tract to distribute at the procession. We
will be distributing about 200,000 tracts. Each one will have a card to be mailed in to enroll in the correspondence course. We pray that God will use these tracts to interest many more people in finding out what the Bible says to them. We ask you to please pray with us about this before and after October 10th, the day of distribution. Our
next newsletter will have the details of the distribution.

It is really unbelievable how fast Kristine is growing. It seems that she wants to eat every minute she is awake. When she was one month old she weighed 9 lbs. 12 oz., almost 3 lbs. more than when she was born! She has a really big admirer in big brother. Stephen thinks she is just the greatest and has a grand time talking to her and making her smile. Of course, he is always Mama's little helper, too! Kathy really becomes dis tressed at times, though. She dresses Kristine up in those little, frilly, feminine dresses, but still the Brazilians always ask if she is a girl or a boy. We asked a friend why they always ask and found out that when their babies are real little they always dress them the same whether it is a boy or a girl. One daily ritual is for big brother to hold baby sister. Stephen wants to hold her at least two or three times a day, but thankfully he is satisfied even though it may only be a minute or two each time. "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." (Phil. 1:3-5).

LOST LETTERS

/ rom time to time there have been problems with letters to and from Brazil

being lost. The past few months have been especially bad as we know of at least
10-15 letters to or from the missionaries in

Belem that have been lost. How many more there may be we have no way of know
ing. We try to answer all letters we receive although sometimes it takes awhile. So if you have written us and never received an

answer it could be that either your letter or our reply was lost. We always enjoy get ting mail and regret that it sometimes is lost.

work. It's not so hard to witness to someone I don't know when we go visiting on calling night. But, what would my friends think if I were to try to talk to them about Jesus? It really makes me happy when someone goes forward in church. Our church is growing even though it may not be too fast. There are so many people living around here
who need Christ that it just seems like an impossible job. And the Bible says that God wants us to preach the gospel to the whole world. Can he really mean it? All those millions and millions? Does he really intend for us ... ? Yes, how big IS my God? It is not just what I say that answers this question. It's how I think!
I do!

And you, my friend. How big is YOUR God?

PRAYER CORNER

"For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers." (Romans 1:9)

Praying for others is an important part of our prayers. But we need to be careful that our prayers do not become vague generalities. "God, bless John Doe, and be with him." Our prayers for others should be specific and relative to their particular situation. Read Colossians 1:9-12 and note the specific things that Paul prayed for the Colossian
Christians. Here are some other specific things you can pray about: Furlough funds and plans

The Meyerses Arrived in Ohio from Brazil November 18! See Letter Inside!

Special Notice
Our address for all personal correspondence while we are in the States is R.R. 2, Goldfield, Iowa 50542.

Dear Friends,

We're happy to be able to write you again, but this time not from Brazil, but from Ohio, We flew from Belem to Dayton, Ohio on Thursday, Nov, 18^ We are spending
Thanksgiving with my family in Lima, and will go to Goldfield. Iowa, in December to spend Christmas with Kathy's family. Although in some ways we were sad leaving Bra zil, it's good to be back home with family and old friends. We plan to begin traveling and visiting the churches in January. Our tentative sche
dule is as follows:

January to mid-February-Iowa area Mid-February through March-Missouri and Kansas April and May-Ohio area June and July-Iowa area

August-Unplanned Right now we still have much of our time open. But. be sure to write us right away if you would like for us to visit in your church. The tract distribution at Cirio was a success as about 35 people including the mis

sionaries from Belem. people from the WycliffBible translators and Brazilian Christians,
passed out over 200,000 tracts in about 2-1/2 hours. When we left Brazil over 200 responses had been received enrolling in the cor respondence course. Please continue praying with us that more will continue to respond and that those whn have enrolled in the course will complete it.

Shortly before we left Brazil, I had the opportunity to preach two more times. I preached a second time at the Marambaia church in Belem, and at the Agulha church near
our home in Icoaraci, It was encouraging when in spite of my inadequate Portuguese,

God gave the increase as four people responded at the invitation following the sermon at Agulha, Also, before we left Brazil, I finished up the final work on the three lesson per
sonal, study course for correspondence graduates so it could be printed. The lessons are now printed and are being used by the others in Belem..

Stephen really liked the airplane flight to the States. He had been talking about it for months. He is still trying to get it all straight about his Grandpas and Grandmas, though.

Although we would talk to him about Grandma and Grandpa Meyers and Grandma and Grandpa Hebner, he would still talk about going to see Grandpa Hebner Meyers. There are just so many new things for a little boy. Kristi is really growing fast and is becom ing quite a charmer already, (Watch out a few years from now!) Mary Crone, one of the two girls from Ozark Bible College spending two years in Belem helping with the printshop and correspondence courses.
On Oct. 10, we passed out over 200,000 tracts at the Clrio. We were divided into
five teams and given several different areas to cover. The teams were also sub-divided into partners. My partner was Joyce Mason, Joyce and I went to the first area and could only get rid of a few of our tracts. Here

in this area we also met several members of other teams who were working nearby.
Then according to our instructions we went to the corner to wait for the other members

of our team. When wa were all there, we walked up to the pick-up point where a car was waiting with more tracts. There wasn't much need of my going there, as I still had most
of my tracts,.

The first area had been so well saturated that most of the people already

As we walked to the pick-up point we passed tracts. We gave them to people going
to the procession and in cafes, to the policemen directing traffic, and to people passing in cars. Then we got mobbed by newspaper boys. The newspaper boys wanted tracts to pass out with their newspapers. By this time I was excited, I was out of tracts and only a few blocks from the pick-up point. At thp pick-up point we heard about the other teams and how strangers were helping to pass out the tracts, too. One of the church elders who had been skeptical about the distribution, even got excited and began passing some of them out. Joyce and I headed on our way no longer discouraged, but full of enthusiasm. One

time when people were pushing about me with outstretched hands, the thought came to me that they weren't really reaching to but to Jesus. Then I knew what the Bible meant when it said that Jesus had compassion on the crowds. Joyce and I stuck together but we never saw the other team members except at the pick-up points^ We got mobbed several times with people trying to grab as many tracts as possible. They ware all ages from little kids to old ladies. There were the poor, the middle class, the rich, businessmen, soldiers, policemen, doctors, and even nuns, all reaching for a tract. They tried to get our attention by fighting, grabbing, pushing, crying,
yelling and even a few by speaking English to us.

Joyce and I had boy scouts and other young people helping us pass them out. Two of

these helped us until the last tract was gone. After wa passed out the last tracts and pushed our way through the last of the crowd, we gota taxi and went to the Baylesses'
house, where we waited excitedly for the others to return.
