NOTE
The ION6200 meter cannot be upgraded using software. Consult Schneider Electric if you wish to upgrade this device.

Ensure that the firmware version you are upgrading to is compatible with the meter you are planning to upgrade.

General Upgrading Considerations

Using a Laptop Computer to Upgrade
Laptopcomputersgenerallyhavedifferentdefaultpowerpropertiesthandesktop computers.Incorrectpoweroptionscanadverselyaffectdeviceupgrading becausetheconnectionbetweenthelaptopandthedevicemustbemaintainedin ordertocompletetheupgradesuccessfully.Ifthelaptopsharddiskshutsdown orthelaptopenterssystemstandbymode,thisconnectionisbrokenandthe upgradeproceduremustberestarted. Ifyouareupgradingameterusingalaptopcomputer,followtheseguidelines: Plugthelaptopcomputerintoawalloutlet.Donotrunthelaptoponitsbattery. Configuretheharddiskssothattheydonotshutdownafteracertainperiodof time(i.e.settonever). Turnoffpowersuspension(e.g.systemstandby)andhibernateoptions. Disableoptionsthatpowerdownthelaptopwhenitisclosed.Thispreventsa shutdownifthelaptopisaccidentallyclosed. Disablethescreensaver;screensaverscanburdentheCPU.

Upgrading Devices via a ModemGate Connection

ThemaximumacceptablebaudrateforupgradingviaModemGateis56.6kps. EnsurethatthebaudrateontheModemGatecommunicationsportandthebaud rateonthemetertobeupgradedaresettothisorlower.

Meter I/O Module Behavior

ThestateofyourmetersI/Omodulesmaychangeduringanupgrade.Theywill reverttoprevioussettingsoncetheupgradeiscomplete.

PerformingadeviceupgradeinIONSetupinvolves: upgradingthedevicefirmware,and upgradingthedevicetemplate. Youcanobtainyourdeviceslatestfirmwareandtemplatebydownloading themfromtheSupportsectionofthewebsite.Savethefilesinthe.../IONSetup/ TEMPLATEfolderforeasyaccess. Upgrading the device firmware and template 1. 2. 3. 4. OpenIONSetupandselectthedeviceyouwanttoupgradefromthelefthand pane. OpentheSetupAssistantintherighthandpane. SelecttheTemplatescreenfromthelistofscreensinthelefthandpaneofSetup Assistant. SelecttheFirmwareUpgradetab,thenclicktheUpgradebutton.Ifyouare promptedforyourmeterpassword,typeitinthenclickOK.

NOTE
If you want to retain customized meter template settings, other than those listed in the Template Paste Options dialogue box (see Step 7), click on the Save to PC tab and click Save. Save your template as a .DCF file. Choose this file in Step 6 instead of the file obtained from the Support section of the website.

Browsetothe.UPGfile(devicefirmware)thatyoudownloadedfromthe websiteandclickOpen.WhenyouarepromptedforyourIONSetuppassword, typeitandclickOK. Browsetothe.DCFfile(devicetemplate)thatyoudownloadedfromthewebsite (orsavedfromyourmeterinStep4)andclickOpen. ClearanyoptionsthatyoudonotwanttoretainthenclickOK. Tracktheprogressoftheupgrade.

Afterthefirmwaredownloadiscomplete,IONSetupwillattempttoverifythe firmware.Iftheverificationfails,contactTechnicalSupport.

NOTE
Some meters display a Checking RMP Status message. RMP stands for Rapid Meter Programming, which downloads the template to the meter in less than 5 minutes (for meters and firmware that support RMP).

IONEnterprisesoftwareincludesadeviceupgradeutilitynamedDevice Upgrader,whichyoucanusetoupgrademostIONdevicesandcertainmeter components(suchastheION7330Ethernetcard,ION7700Xpresscard,orMGT)in yoursystem.WiththeDeviceUpgradeutility,youcanupgradethefirmwareona singleIONdeviceorupgrademultipleIONdevicesofthesametypeinasingle session.YouaccesstheDeviceUpgraderutilityfromtheManagementConsole.

NOTE
A Supervisor password authority (level 5) is required to upgrade ION devices.

Thefollowinginstructionsdetailhowtoupgradeoneormoredevicesofthesame type.Ifyouneedtoupgradedevicesthataredifferenttypes,youmustperform thefollowinginstructionsforeachdevice.Forexample,ifyouneedtoupgradean ION7330meterandanION7330Ethernetcard,thenyouhavetoperformthe followinginstructionsonceforthemeter,andthenagainfortheEthernetcard(or viceversa). SomeIONdevicesrequirethatyouupgradethecomponentsinacertainorder.For example,whenupgradingtheION7700,youmustupgradetheXpressCard firmwarefirst,thentheION7700meterfirmware,thenfinallytheMGTfirmware. Consultyourproductsdocumentationformoreinformation.

Before Using the Device Upgrader

Pleasereadthissectionbeforeyoubeginyourupgrade.Therecommendations presentedherecanhelpwithyourdeviceupgradingprocedure.

Make sure your data logs are current

Datastoredinthemetersmemoryislostduringthefirmwareupgrade.This includeswaveforms,Min/Maxvalues,andinformationstoredinDataRecorder andIntegratormodules.Ensureyourdatalogsareuptodate(i.e.theIONLog InserterServiceiscaughtup)beforeyoucommenceupgrading. Ensuring the data logs are current 1. 2. 3. LaunchVistaandopentheuserdiagramofthedeviceyouplantoupgrade. ClicktheDataLogViewerforvoltageorotherparametersthatupdatequickly (e.g.everyfifteenminutes). Lookatthetimestampcolumn.Ifthetimestampiscurrentifthedateiscorrect andthecurrenttimeiswithinthetimestampintervalthentheIONLog InserterServiceiscaughtup.

Modifying the transmit delay for Ethernet devices

ForEthernetenabledION8800,ION8600orION7550/ION7650meters,youcanset theTransmitDelayparameterto0forfasterfirmwareupgrades.Notethatyou shouldalsosettheUseAck/NacksparametertoNowhenyoumodifythetransmit delayforthesedevices. UpgradingfirmwareforION7300seriesmetersrequiresaminimumtransmit delayof50ms;however,itisrecommendedthatthedefault150mstransmitdelay beused.Checkthissettingbeforeyouattempttoupgradeyourdevice.Failureto haveaminimumof50mstransmitdelayforION7300seriesdevicesmayresultin upgradefailure. Configuring device transmit delay 1. 2. 3. 4. StarttheManagementConsole.ClicktheDevicesiconinthelefthandpane. Rightclickthedeviceyouwanttoupgradeinthelistofdevicesandselect Configure. Rightclickintheparameterssectionoftheconfigurationdialogboxandselect AdvancedProperties. SetTransmitDelaytoatleast50ms(150msisrecommended)forION7300series meters,orsetTransmitDelayto0forION7550,ION7650,ION8600andION8800 meters(setUseAck/NackstoNoforthislattergroupofdevicestoo.) ClickOK.

NOTE
When upgrading the firmware for devices in serial and modem sites, it is recommended that you keep the transmit delay at the sites default (i.e. 150 ms for both serial and modem sites).

Using the Device Upgrader

1. 2. StartManagementConsoleandselectTools>System>DeviceUpgrader. TypeyourIONEnterpriseusernameandpassword,andclickOK.An informationwindowdisplays,containingtipsandwarningsabouttheupgrade operation.ClickOK. SelecttheIONdeviceyouwanttoupgradefromListDevicesofType.The DeviceUpgradelistsallthedevicesoftheselectedtypeintheSelectDevicesto Upgradebox. Selectthedevice(s)youwanttoupgradefromSelectDevicestoUpgrade.To selectmultipledevices,holddownCTRLwhileclickingeachdevice.TheSave/ RestoreFrameworkcheckboxisselectedbydefault.Thiskeepsacopyofyour currentframeworktemplateduringtheupgrade.

CAUTION
If you uncheck the Save/Restore Framework check box, the current framework template for each selected device is deleted when the firmware upgrade is complete, leaving no framework configuration in the upgraded devices. Any custom frameworks you have on the device are also deleted. If you intend to replace the meters framework configuration with a new template, it is recommended that you upgrade via ION Setup. See Upgrading Firmware Using ION Setup on page 3 for information.

Ifyouareupgradingmultipledevices,specifyintheFailureHandlingareahow theDeviceUpgraderrespondstoanunsuccessfulupgrade: SelectHaltAftertospecifythenumberoffaileddeviceupgradesthatcan occurbeforeDeviceUpgraderstops.Bydefault,theutilityissettostopafter thefirstfailedupgrade. SelectIgnoreAlltoattempttoupgradealloftheselecteddevicesregardless ofanyfailures.

IntheSelectRevisionsection,clickSelectFile.Navigatetotheupgrade(.upg) filethatyouwanttouseandclickOpen. ThisfilewillbedownloadedtoallthedevicesthatarehighlightedintheSelect DevicestoUpgradelist.

ClickUpgradetoupgradetheselecteddevice(s). TheUpgradeStatusboxshowseachstageintheupgradeprocess,andthe PercentCompletedbarindicatestheprogressofeachupgrade.Eachcompleted upgradeisnotedintheUpgradeStatusbox. Enterthemeterpassword(s)whenpromptedtodoso.

NOTE
If connection to the device is lost, or if power to the device is interrupted during an upgrade, restart the Device Upgrade utility procedure.

DownloadandinstalltheIONEnterpriseDeviceSupportUpdaterforyournew firmwarefromthewebsite.
