KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR HUMBLED HIMSELF BEFORE JEHOVAH GOD

Recap
Last week, we saw how God sent his messenger to protect Daniel’s three friends. King
Nebuchadnezzar was very shocked and hence made a decree that no one could say anything against
the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego or they will be killed.

Introduction
One day, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that made him afraid. He dreamt of an enormous tree that
grew large and strong till its top touched the skies. The tree was visible to the ends of the earth. Its
fruits were abundant and from it, birds and beasts found food and shelter. Then suddenly, a
messenger coming down from heaven said, “Cut down the tree and trim off its branches but leave the
stump. After that, let it be like the animals of the land. Let it be drenched by the dew and let it live like
the wild animals until its heart changes.” The King told this dream to Daniel and asked him to interpret
the dream. Daniel thought about the dream for a time and his thoughts terrified him. He told the King,
“O King, this enormous tree is actually referring to you, just like how the whole world can see the tree,
the King’s glory, royalties and power is spread around the world. However, O King, you have to know
that all these are given to you by the Lord, God. This is because, just like how the tree would be
destroyed, the King will one day send His messenger to take away your glory such that you will be
like the wild beast and live like an animal, be drenched by the dew and become stupid like an animal
until the day determined by God when you acknowledge that the Lord God is the Most High and the
only true God. You also understand that all your glory, royalty and power are given by Him. At that
time, the King’s glory, royalty and power will once again be restored back to you.” Indeed, after a year,
when the King was walking in the palace one day, he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built
as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” In a split second, a
voice came from heaven, “King Nebuchadnezzar, because you are conceited, your royal authority
has been taken from you!” Immediately, the King was driven away from people and lived with the wild
animals. He ate grass like cattle. His body was drenched with the dew until his hair grew like feathers
of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird. He became stupid like an animal. At the end of that
time which God had determined, the King raised his eyes toward heaven and restored his sanity. He
then praised the Lord, God and gave all the glory back to Him. He acknowledged that He is the Most
High and the only true God and that His authority is forever. His Kingdom endures from generations
to generations! In a split second, the King was brought back to his palace and God restored His glory,
royalty and power back to the King once again.

1. In this world, regardless of how a person has power, money, fame and intelligence,
these are all determined by the Lord, God
1) God controls everything. Regardless of whether a person has power, money, fame,
intelligence or not, these are all determined by God. This is because God is the most
intelligent and what he determines is the best.
2) What God determines is to demonstrate that he is the true and highest God and also
the only true God, so that people will revere Him and believe Him. Therefore, the
meaning of revering and believing God is to know and believe the one whom He had
sent, the Lord, Jesus Christ.
3) Lastly, what God determines is for the good of His people (children). For example,
God gave King Nebuchadnezzar so much riches and power so as to bless God’s
people, Israel.
2. Those with power, money, fame and intelligence but do not know how to give the
glory back to God will see all they have, taken away from them
1) When King Nebuchadnezzar grew conceited and thought too highly of himself, not
giving the glory to God, all his glory, royalties, power and own intelligence were taken
away from him, becoming like an animal. [Actually, when people do not know their
own Creator God, they are like animals who do not have eternal life or thoughts of
eternity, living only for a number of years before they leave this world. Just like how
our school textbooks tell us that Man is an animal. This is because the textbooks are
written by people who do not know God.]
2) Therefore, one day when we have the power, money, fame and intelligence, we
should never be conceited but instead understand that these are blessed by God so
that we can save people (ask people to know about Jesus), heal people (ask them to
rely on Jesus) and to bless people (ask people to preach about Jesus).
3) Hence, when we have no power, money, fame or intelligence like others, do not
grumble to God, or even more so, do not look down on ourselves because our
conditions are given by God so that we can use these conditions to comfort and
understand others. When we are able to value these conditions, God will bless us
greatly and prepare great rewards and gifts in heaven (i.e. crowns).

3. Only those who truly humble themselves before God would receive God’s greatest
blessing [Discuss and ponder]
1) The meaning of being humble = Like to happily accept the conditions that God has
given me and use these conditions to get people to believe and love Jesus Christ.
2) Ponder if you have any areas which you are proud of: Do you feel that you are very
strong in some areas (good looking appearance, good in studies, can “act cleaver”,
good in ball games, rich family etc). How do you humble yourself before God so that
you can be used by God?
3) Ponder if you have any areas which you feel inferior to others: Do you feel that there
are some areas in which we are very weak and cannot be compared to others (do
not look good, not good in studies, cannot talk well, always lose in games and
competitions, humble family background with little money/toys, etc). How do you
value these conditions that God has given so that you can be used by the God and
help to comfort many others who are worse than you? [Need not be first in everything]
