Chyrsella Patrick English Essay: Poetry Lament and Report of Wordsworth are two poems that vividly portray nature being damaged and with this the poet creates such a powerful effect for the reader. In Lament, Gillian Clarke refers to the sickness of animals as a way in which nature is being damaged. The symbolism of the earth and Sun also imply the damage upon nature. Clarke uses a narrative method of third person to create such a powerful effect making the reader view the portrayal of nature being damaged. Report to Wordsworth is a poem that emphasises the damage towards nature through Boey Kim Cheng phrases of the Greek God. The first sentence to the poem immediately draws attention to nature in need for help. The attitude of the poem concentrates in the effect it has on the reader, I think Boey Kim Chengs aim was to persuade readers to be more diligent to nature. For the green turtle with her pulsing burden, in search of the breeding-ground. For her eggs laid in their nest of sickness. Clarke states this sentence which refers to animals being harmed and neglected, animals being a big part of nature. The metaphor present is Nest of sickness. It backs up the point the author is making about the burden of the turtle because green turtles are suffering sue to the effects of the war and human activity. For me this vividly portrays nature being damaged because the green turtle has eggs which lay in a nest full of sickness and she is searching for the breeding grounds so that her eggs arent in the nest of sickness. Lament, vividly portrays nature being damaged by the expression of the metaphor Nest of Sickness and the burden Green Turtle. For the burnt earth and the sun put out, the scalded ocean and the blazing well. Using the Sun and Earth I think this is a symbolic meaning of nature being damaged. Gillian Clarke displays the earth being burnt and the sun being put out this vividly portrays nature being damaged as the Earth has been burnt. 'The burnt earth and sun put out' are oxymorons, it is usually the sun that burns, and the image of the earth is one that denotes a cooling image. These two have swapped roles, nature has been defied and destroyed, and neither are in harmony thus creating the portrayal of nature being damaged. When third person is used in Lament it gives the powerful effect that the reader should rethink and care for nature. Clarke expresses her poem as an elegy for the animals that have been put through sickness and been damaged by the Gulf war. With recent research i have found out that the poem is indeed a factual elegy for these animals and that the poet wanted to affect the reader into realizing how nature is being damaged. The poet refers to the Greek sea-god Proteus who lost all this hopes all hopes of Proteus rising from the sea have sunk because he is entombed in the waste. The word entombed refers to natural destruction and suggests he is hidden in the waste of the sea, this image adds to the sympathy than the reader has in regards of Nature. Tritons notes struggle to be free, his famous horns are choked, his eyes are dazed, and Neptune lies helpless as beached as a whale, while insatiate man moves in for the kill. Gods messenger used to play a horn, this metaphor is effective in creating meaning and tragedy as music is poetically linked to a positive aspect of life; by destroying music, symbol for life, man is destroying everything which is good in our world. Here Boey Kim Cheng is trying to use both the Greek Gods a symbolical meaning that we treat nature badly and we should do something about it before its too late, it also vividly portrays nature being damaged by humanity.

Chyrsella Patrick English Essay: Poetry Report to Wordsworth is immediately, You should be here, Nature has need of you. This sentence grabs attention and is direct it allows for the flow of the poem to come through, and with these 9 words it immediate draws attention to the fact that nature is need of you, in need of help. Boey Kim Cheng refers directly to Wordsworth: You should be here, Nature has need of you. The you could also be referred to the reader. Nature is described as broken and ruined she has been laid waste. Smothered by the smog. This personification of nature shows the importance of nature for the poet and introduces the harmful actions of man towards the natural environment. By stating, you should be here, Nature has need of you. Set as the first sentence in the poem it allows there to be the portrayal of nature in danger. The attitude throughout the poem is how nature is in danger. He says at the end of the poem, "poetry and piety fail" He means poetry fails to save humankind and religion also fails. This poem is very gloomy; it paints a grim picture of human beings as the cause of the ruination of nature. The Poet uses this to create the flow of a portrayal of nature being damaged by mankind. The main theme in these two poems portrays the lack of respect humans have towards the natural environment today. In Lament the poet is using third person to allow the perception of nature being in danger, the poet also uses animals to symbolize the same perception. In Report to Wordsworth Boey is using the old, Greek gods being helpless, looking at Earth with no hope left. In both of these poems we can find the connection of human destruction on our own planet. In Clarkes poem he is mostly using metaphors, for example For the green turtle with her pulsing burden, in search of the breeding-ground. For her eggs laid in their nest of sickness.
