The primary goal of the ESL Program is to help students to use U.S. academic English, understand the culture of U.S. schools, and be successful learners.

What is the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program?


ESL Program Understandings Students will understand: 1. English is used to communicate for a variety of purposes in social, cultural, and academic settings. 2. English language strategies support academic achievement in content areas. 3. English language mastery requires proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Where are students assessed for ESL? Students who meet the criteria are assessed at The Family Welcome Center. Who is responsible for teaching English Learners? o Most English Learners receive the majority of their instruction in mainstream classrooms. o ESL teachers provide support in a variety of ways depending on student need. Some of these are: Working with students in mainstream classes. Teaching sheltered English language classes.

Which students should be part of the ESL program? o A student should be assessed for the ESL program if: The student is from a country other than the U.S. Someone who cares for the student speaks a language other than English. The student has a sibling in the ESL program. The family uses a language other than English at home. o Students will be assessed on their reading, writing, and speaking skills in U.S. English.

What happens after students are assessed? If a student is not eligible for ESL service based on their test scores, families can schedule a registration meeting at their childs school. The student will not receive support from ESL staff. If a student is eligible for ESL service based on their test scores, the test information is shared with the nearest school offering ESL support for the student. Families can schedule a registration meeting at their childs school. Free transportation is provided for students to attend an ESL centerbased site.

How do students leave the ESL program? A student must show proficiency in English by: o Being successful in their mainstream classes. o Meeting or exceeding expectations on Minnesota state tests.
