Procedure on the Properties of Ionic and Molecular Compounds (Activity no. 11)

I.

Determine the Properties of Ionic and molecular compounds in the use of heat.

A. Dependent Variable: Salt

1. Put a small sample of salt in the test tube. 2. Label the test tube by placing the compounds name on a masking tape; stick it at the designated place in the test tube rack. 3. Place the test tube to the test tube holder. 4. Heat it to the Bunsen burner for 5 minutes. 5. Record the observation.

B. Dependent Variable: Sugar

1. Put a small sample of sugar in another test tube. 2. Label it by placing the compounds name on the masking tape and stick it at the designated place in the test tube rack. 3. Place the test tube to the test tube holder. 4. Heat it for 5 minutes. 5. Record the results.

II.

Determine the properties of ionic and molecular compounds in the use of oil.

A. Dependent Variable: Salt

1. Put a half-filled test tube of oil in the test tube. 2. Put a small sample of salt in it. 3. Label the test tube by naming the compound on the masking tape and stick it on the test tube.

4. Shake the test tube gently for 10 seconds. 5. Record the results.

B. Dependent Variable: Sugar 1. Put half-filled test tube of oil in another test tube. 2. Place a small sample of sugar in it. 3. Label it by naming the compound on the masking tape and stick it on the test tube. 4. Shake the tube gently for 10 seconds 5. Observe and get the results.

III.

Determine the properties of Ionic and Molecular Compounds in the use of electric conductivity.

A. Dependent Variable: Salt

1. Pour 100-ml of distilled water to the beaker. 2. Add some salt to the beaker. 3. Stir it until it dissolves completely. 4. Test its conductivity by using a conductivity apparatus.

B. Dependent Variable: Sugar

1. Pour 100-ml of distilled water to the beaker. 2. Add some sugar in it. 3. Stir it until it completely dissolves. 4. Test it conductivity by using a conductivity apparatus.

Procedure on Solubility (Activity 12) I. Comparing and Contrasting the Solubility of Water and oil.

A. Pour 100-ml of water into the 250-ml beaker. B. Add the oil to the beaker. C. Determine which is in the upper and the lower layer.

II.

Determine the solubility of the two substances by using food coloring

A. Dissolve the food coloring in 10ml water into the 100-ml beaker. B. Add 5 drops of dissolved food coloring into the 250-ml beaker. C. At eye level, hold the beaker. D. Observe the underside of the oils surface. E. To push the drops of food coloring to the water layer, use a stirring rod. F. Observe and record the results.
