Freshman Elections Rules

1. Campaign Activities include any conduct intended to promote or to oppose the election of any individual(s) to any Student Senate Office. 2. All Campaign Activities must conform to the laws of the State of Kansas, the ordinances of the City of Lawrence, and the rules and regulations of the University, including the Guidelines for University Events and Registered Organizations which can be found in the Student Involvement office. 3. Campaign materials may not be posted or distributed on private property without the property owners consent. 4. Campaign materials in residence halls will be allowed in public areas designated by the complex director and/or the assistant director for dining services in the Department of Student Housing. Candidates must receive approval from Student Housing and Dining before displaying any campaign materials in areas under the domain of those two departments. 5. Any campaigning in a classroom, during a scheduled university class or during the passing period before or after that class, is prohibited. 6. Handbills and tokens (i.e. flyers and buttons) must be individually distributed to students. Campaign materials may not be left in stacks or on cars. 7. Chalking must be on a horizontal surface exposed to the weather. 8. No soliciting in any building governed by Student Housing. 9. Tampering with other candidates campaign materials (posters, signs, etc.) is strictly prohibited. 10.All campaign materials must include the sponsoring candidates name. 11.A sample of each campaign material (or a detailed written description) must be submitted to the Student Senate office (410 Kansas Union) by 5:00 p.m. the day after the item is displayed. 12.Materials posted on public, university property are only permitted on bulletin boards no windows, walls, trees or light poles. 13.Every candidate is allowed only one poster, not exceeding 11 x 14 per oncampus bulletin board. 14.No candidates poster shall overlay or materially affect the readability of any other candidates poster. Campaign Materials may not be posted on Department or restricted use bulletin boards. 15.Election Day: No person shall obstruct or interfere with an individuals right to vote. 16.Voter intimidation, coercion or electioneering is not permitted. No candidate may be within 10 feet of any computer used for voting. A violation of this nature shall constitute a major fine. 17.All Materials must be removed from campus by September 13 (two school days after the Election). 18.Possible Penalties for code violations: 1) Up to $100 for a major offense and $20 for a minor offense, 2) Disqualification from election or dismissal from office, 3) Restitution, and 4) Any other non-monetary fine deemed appropriate by the Student Executive Committee. Freshman Elections Rules


There is a mandatory Freshman Elections campaign meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd at 6:00pm in the Parlors ABC room on Level 5 of the Kansas Union. Any complaints, questions, or problems must be submitted in writing to the office mailbox or email of Tyler Childress, Student Senate Chief of Staff. senatecos@ku.edu
