1. A force 400 N has angles of 600, 450 and 1300 respectively with the X, Y and Z axes. Find the
components Fx , Fy and Fz of the force.
2. Five strings are tied at a point and are pulled in all directions, equally spaced, from one another.
If the magnitude of the pulls on three consecutive strings is 70 N, 40 N and 55 N respectively, find
graphically the magnitude of the pulls on two other strings, if the system is in equilibrium.
3. (a) What is the advantage of method of section over method of joints? How will you use method of
section in finding forces in the members of a truss?
(b) A cantilever truss is loaded as shown in figure 1. Find the member forces.

4. A train weighing 1900 KN without the locomotive starts to move with contact acceleration along a
straight horizontal track and in the first for acquires a velocity of 50 kmph. Determine the function S
in the draw bar between the locomotive and train if the total resistance to motion due to friction and
air resistance is constant and equal to 0.005 times the weight of the train. [16]
5. (a) What is the energy of motion for a rigid body rotating about a fixed axis?
(b) A 70kg sprinter starts from rest and accelerate uniformly for 5.8s over a distance of 34.5m.
Neglecting air resistance, determine the average power developed by the sprinter. [16]
6. The central deflection of a SSB with a central pt load is given by S = PL3 / 48EI. Where L = 5 M, E
= 2 ×105 N/mm2 , I = 1.73 × 10−5 m4 . The beam is of uniform C.S. with a static load “P”. Determine
(a) equivalent spring constant of the beam
(b) the frequency of vibration of a 60kg block attached to the centre of the beam. Neglect the mass
of the beam and assure that the load remaining in contact with the beam. [16]
7. A simple pendulum consisting of a bob attached to the cord oscillates in a vertical plane with a period
of 1.5 s. The maximum velocity. of the bob is 0.5 m/sec. Assure SHM determine
(a) amplitude of the motion
(b) the max tangential acceleration of the bob. [16]
8. The block vibrates in SHM with a period of 5s when the two springs of constants K1 & K2 are connected
in series and 2s when they are in parallel. Determine the ratio K1 / K2 at the two spring constants.

1. The resultant of the two forces when they act at an angle of 650 is 20 N. If the same forces are acting
at right angles their resultant is 16.5 N. Determine the magnitude of the two forces.
2. Five strings are tied at a point and are pulled in all directions, equally spaced, from one another.

3. A cylinder of length 750 mm and diameter 150 mm is standing on its base. Determine the mass
moment of inertia of the cylinder about
(a) the longitudinal axis and
(b) its base. Take the density of the material as 7830 kg/m3 .
4. A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 250 m/s at a target B located 620m above the gun A and
at a horizontal distance as 3700m. Neglecting air resistance, determine the value of the fixing angleα.

5. A slender beam AB of length 3.5 m which remains always in the same vertical plane has its ends A and
B constrained to remain in contact with a horizontal floor and a vertical wall respectively as shown
in figure. Determine the velocity and acceleration of the end B at the position shown in figure 1, if a
point A has a velocity of 2.8 m/sec and an acceleration of 1.8 m/sec2 towards left. [16]

6. Obtain the natural frequency formula for simple pendulum. [16]


7. Derive an expression for the equation of motion of a simple pendulum employing the principle of
conservation of energy. Also find the frequency and time period.

8. The bob of a simple pendulum of length l = 1.4 m is moving with a velocity of 200 mm / s to the
right at time t = 0 when θ = 0. Assume SHM, determining at t = 1.6 s
(a) the angle Q,
(b) de magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration of the bob. [16]

(c) the projection of F along the line OB.

3. (a) What are the reliant features of the periodic motion of a simple Pendulum?
(b) Obtain equation of motion for compound pendulum and derive formula for cyclic frequency and time period.

in meters and records, respectively. Determine the position, the velocity, and the acceleration as the particle
when t = 3s. [16]
