EV archbishop avoids soliciting from politicians

The archdiocese of Palo shuns in accepting donations from politicians reason why it is now in the process of using lots owned by them for commercial purposes to raise their own funds.
Thus said Father Amadeo Alvero, spokesperson of the archdiocese, amid calls of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) not to solicit from politicians. The stand of the influential group came amid controversy on the issue involving the pork barrel of the countrys congressmen and senators. The pork barrel has often been cited as a source of corruption among Congress members. It has been the policy of the archdiocese not to solicit donations from politicians. But when they themselves give, sometimes the Church accepts them especially if they are given in good faith and without strings attach, Alvero said. Alvero said that by not accepting donations from politicians, the stand of the Catholic Church on issues involving their donor-politicians or the government itself is not compromised. (Well) be free to say anything against the wrong doing of our government (if we will not accept donations from them), the archdiocese spokesperson said. Last May during his meeting with members of the media, Archbishop John Du said that he also abhor seeking donations from politicians saying that this could start for the Church to be beholden to them. to page 2

DOH representatives to the province thus urge the residents of the identified barangays to cooperate in the mass treatment activity, once it reach their community, in order for them to help government address the particular health problem. FORGETTING TO WEEP
Scavengers sifting through garbage dumps of Manila s Payatas, Smokey Mountain of Cebu and Mandurriao in Iloilo are half a world away from Brazil . Thats where over three million gathered for World Youth Day. From Rio de Janeiro , Pope Francis reached out to them. He asked that 35 Argentine landfill workers or cartoneros come up to the main altar. Theyre dubbed catador de materiais reciclveis in. Portuguese, which is spoken in Brazil , Poverty and hunger slash their life expectancies. In Mexico City , average lifespan for a cartonero is 39 years --- three decades shorter than national average. One out of three babies born to Egyptian garbage dump families dies before age of one. In Payatas here, scavengers cook papag from food scraps, winnowed from dead cats, glass shards, sometimes human cadaver parts. It tastes sour, a 13 year old says. It fills our stomach but doesnt last till evening. With crude rakes, itd take 20 minutes to sort out from rotting litter recyclables recalls Fr. Heinz Kuluke who lived among 160 families in squalid Cebu huts,. Adults earned barely enough for rice.. There is no future, a 15-yearold scavenger told Fr Kuluke who now heads the worldwide Society of Divine Word. Reach out to the most farthest, the most indifferent, Francis told the youngsters. As a World Youth Day spin off, I want a mess in dioceses! .The young should insist t we defend ourselves against everything that is worldliness,.(complacent ) clericalism shut-in on ourselves Leave comfort of your churches and go to the favelas( shanty towns ), he prodded bishops and priests gathered earlier in Rios cathedral, BBCs Julia Carneiro reports... The shepherd of the faithful must smell like his sheep. We cannot keep ourselves shut up in parishes, So, many people are waiting for the Gospel. There is danger we turn into facade Christians dragged by fashion. Pope Francis proved to be a pontiff of surprises, writes the Boston Globes Lisa Wangsness. That can blur context. After all, the world firstmet Jorge Cardinal Borglio of Argentina as Francis only four months ago ---- sans ermine cloak and regalia., . As the 265th successor to Peter, he now jolts an over 2000 year-old institution by homespun word --- but mainly by compelling example Dont tool around in fancy cars, he told his priests. Francis dumped Vatican Mercedez-Benzes for a simple van. Seeing the Argentinian pope riding in a Fiat Pinto, one of the least expensive of cars his own choice around the streets of Rio filled me with the deepest tenderness, Ilse Scamparini worte in the Guardian . A pope who dares to change centuries-old mentality risks being taken for an exotic populist. After election, Francis turned down sprawling pontifical apartments. Theres enough room here for 300, he said. Instead, he lodges in an no-frill Vatican hostel. In Buenos Aires , .he turned over Villa Miseria to a religious order who operate it as a hospital. He lived in a two room rented apartment and took the bus to work. He wears sensible black shoes and gets his own coffee from a vending machine. This is Jorge, he told his startled newspaper dealer in Brazil to suspend delivery. On Holy Thursday rites,. he washed

ts been almost if not more than a month now since the time P10-B pork barrel scam was exposed and further revealed that it benefitted businesswoman Janet LimNapoles and reportedly in cahoots with legislators both in the Upper and Lower Houses. We recall and daily observed reports of government litigations and those of even just mere allegations made by people against perceived lawbreakers in this country were immediately apprehended and jailed or if ever freed temporarily after putting up bail if crime is bailable. With no less than her own employees who exposed these corrupt practice so we ask, what prima facie evidences justice still is waiting for to formally charge Napoles in court. We suspect that influential senators and congressmen named in the fraud may have influenced the not filing cases against her so far. Are her billions greasing the palms of DOJ prosecutors? This Napoles appears more influential than former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who is in prison on corruption charges albeit comfortably jailed in a hospital.
common good. Complicated situations are incapable of serving the good of all. Yes, for a time, we may enjoy certain perks and advantages, but these will never last long, and in time, the fantasy will just collapse. The perks and advantages, the convenience and comfort that complicated situations give us are notoriously selfish in character, enjoyed at the expense of the necessary good of others. If this predicament persists without being corrected, then we would be continually undermining the peace and harmony in society and in the world, in general. We would be generating distrust among ourselves, and chaos and collapse in the world would just be a matter of time. We need to be more attentive to our duty to pursue, develop and defend simplicity. We will always know when we start to be and to get complicated, and we should try our best to avoid or fight that predicament right at the first instance when it makes its appearance.

not rigid at all, but is all flexible, and ever adjusting and anticipating while respecting the way things in general are. In other words, its a simplicity that can take on anything, very dynamic and versatile, and would even know how to derive good from evil. Its very much compatible with prudence, patience and hope, and goes all the way to live out the demands of charity, since it can prefer to suffer for any duration of time if only to gain the eternal goal of life everlasting with God who is our ultimate end. The opposite of simplicity is to be complicated, which happens whenever we detach ourselves from God and prefer to be guided by our own estimation of thingsbe it through common sense, our sciences and arts, our social, economic or political consensus. In that condition, we are actually making our own world, our own reality, our own set of truths and untruths that actually have no real basis. Its self-interest that is served rather than the

IN the heat and frenzy of our modern life, where rapidity seems to be the main rule, disregarding the concern of whether we are in the right course or not, we need to pause if only to be able to distinguish between what is to be simple and what is to be complicated. The line has been blurred and all but deleted, and many of us do not care anymore whether simplicity still holds some value to us or whether being complicated holds no danger at all to us. We need to resurface the original and undeniable value of simplicity, highlighting why it should be pursued, developed and defended, especially these days when many compli-

cating elements practically glut our existence in all levels. Simplicity, which is not equivalent at all to being a simpleton or being nave, is an indispensable quality in our life for it conforms us to what is proper to our nature and condition, makes us see things very objectively and extensively, and enables us to go through the gyrations of life without losing our focus on our proper and ultimate end. Its a result of a vital union of God, our Creator and Father, who is in fact absolutely simple in essence and power even if he has to contend with the potentially infinite twists and turns that our freedom can take. DOE still looking for fund to finance transmission line

The Department of Energy (DOE) is still looking for budget to finance the P108 million construction of underwater transmission line from the mainland of Southern Leyte to the historic island town of Limasawa. Mayor Melchor Petracorta confirmed that in their recent meeting with energy officials, they were assured that the project is in the pipeline for 2014 implementation. Under the revised plan, the project will need about P108 million, more than double than theP50 previously estimated by the National Electrification Administration (NEA), Petracorta told Leyte Samar Daily Express. The proposed project, however, will not be pushed through soon given the P28 million budget limit for DOEs sitio electrification program. Energy Secretary (Carlos Jericho) Petilla assured in his visit to Southern Leyte on July 1 that the Limasawa project is their priority especially that feasibility studies have already been completed, Petracorta added. Electricity for the island will be tapped from a substation in the provincial capital of Maasin City, which is approximately 30 kilometers away from the island town. The island- municipality is being served by the Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative(Soleco) through a diesel generator plant with 163 KVA capacity. The current power rate in the island is P9 per kilowatt hour (kwh), higher than the P8.30 per kwh charged in the mainland. (With a )reliable power supply, will help attract tourism-related investments because the cost of doing business will be cheaper. Many business owners are not interested to invest in our place because the power rate is very costly, the mayor said. The generator operated for five hours on the minimum every night, providing electricity to all 6 barangays of the island with about 1,000 household consumers. The local government asked Soleco to extend operation to six hours but the cooperative denied the request due to the high fuel cost. Small solar panels augment power supply but only limited to street lights in Barangay Triana. The presence of generator takes Limasawa away from the list of unenergized municipality. In the entire Southern Leyte, some 5,828 households have no electricity, according to NEAs May 2013 report. The island has been visited by more than 500 foreign divers every year with promotion efforts of dive shops in the mainland, according to the local tourism office. These tourists, however, dont stay overnight in Limasawa due to absence of accommodation facilities The tadpole-shaped island, which is approximately six kilometers long, is the place where the first mass in the Philippines was held back in March 1521. Limasawas historical event nearly five centuries ago is part of Ferdinand Magellans fleeting episode of the 1,081-day circumnavigation of the world. They landed in the western port of the island of Mazaua, the old name of the island. (SARWELL

Over 258,000 registered in EV for barangay, SK elections

For the past seven days, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) here in the region has observed a good turnout of applicants who have registered to vote in the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections. Atty. Felicisimo Embalsado, Comelec-8 assistant regional , said there has been an unprecedented interest in the ongoing voters registration for the synchronized elections scheduled on October 28. As of July 28, there were about 69,879 registrants for the barangay elections all over the region. We receive reports from the field on a daily basis. Every day, we receive at least 8,000 to 10,000 applications for registration, Embalsado said. For the latest count in the SK registrants, Embalsado said it totalled 188,186 as of Sunday. Comelec has scheduled a 10-day registration last July 22 and will end today. The Comelec has estimated that around 80,000 individuals who will register for the barangay elections while 200,000 youth aged 15-17 will enlist for the SK elections. We expect more people to flock to their respective city and municipal elections offices to register on the deadline, Embalsado said. But he added the local elections officers have been given a free hand to implement necessary procedures in accommodating all registrants. He said, historically, the number of registrants and voters for these elections has been low. This goes to show that people are determined to be registered and be able to exercise their rights to vote, he added. Meanwhile, Embalsado said the Comelec will not extend the registration period. We have not received any order from Comelec central office to extend the registration. The deadline will be 5:00 p.m. on July 31, the Comelec official said. (REYAN L. ARINTO)
