THE

CHURCH

by Jerry 0. Hall

The church is a corporate body of individuals^ who have forfeited their wills to accept the will of Christ in their livts Its smallest unit is the one individual^ who has jmde his decision of doing away with his will to allow the will of Christ to superceed it. Its larg est unit is seen in the corporate catholic body of individuals making that decision.
Its primary purpose is that of maintaining itself in the will of Christ's by means of a spiritual growth in the knowledge and understanding of His will. Its secondary purpose log

ically follows the firstj and in fact cannot be stopped, if the first takes place. I speak of the sharing of that will with those who do not know it, that they may submit to it, and
thus become a part of His church.

In this propogation of His will, those who adhere need not to depend upon any means other than their faith in Him. For He has provided the message. For He has supplied the task by His own command; and He has given the promise to accompany the believer in the fulfill
ment of that task.

But what if we, the church, place our confidence in our own plea?
own power? Can we not help but fail?

V/hat if we place our trust

in physical structures and organizations? Vfhat if we attempt to accomplish tl:^t task incur
Therefore, brethren, we must turn back to our study of His will that our trust will
so firm in Him, so that the message will be restored to its intended power.
become

Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace which was given me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden

for ages in God who created all things; that through the church the manifold wis
dom of God might now be made known 'to the principalities and powers in the hea

venly places.

This was according to the eternal purpose which he realized

in

Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him. So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you,

which is your glory. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in ht^aven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the in ner man, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you being rooted and grounded in love, may have power to comprehend with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge thkt you my be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the pow';;r at 'work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ J^jSus
to all genurations, for ever and ever, xviuen.

Dear Supporters:

I apologize for the use of a mimeographed letter, but

because of the press for time, we find i t a necessity. As you read in oiir regular newsletter, we will be leaving for Brazil

November 2nd from Des Moines and expect to be there twenty-^hree

hours later. There are several items of business, I need to bring to yotir attention before making our departure.

For the protection of individual donors, we have thought it wise to incorporate. This will give individual donors the right to claim such gifts as deductbable income. I realize that such donations are made with ''t'. the desire to further the
cause of Christ and not to ease one's tax load. But when?the government offers this privilege, it would be unwise not to

take advantage of it. But to take advantage of this, you must make your checks payable to the incorporation, SOUTHERN BRAZIL CHRISTIAN MISSION, and NOT to Jlerry Hall. We are not going under any organization and this incorpor ation should not be confused with a mission organization. We are going to Brazil under the sponsorship of the West Side Church of Christ of Des Moines, Iowa, and will be working under the oversight of its eldership. The incorporation is simply to ofomply
with the laws of the land.

All contributions should be sent to our forwarding agent:

Several of our pledged supporters have^for our departure

to begin their support. If at all possible, we would greatly appreciate this support beginning before our departure of November
1st.

It would be a great aid to us in transferring funds to Brazil if oui support could be received within the first week of each month. We can assure you that with our full pledged support coming in, we will have an adequate income to enable us to preach the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
We do thank our God for you. He has made it possible for us to go to Brazil because of your sacrifice. May He richly
bless you all.
