ACTION WORDS LEARNING MADE EASY

Description
This Teacher Support Material is designed to equip the pupils with the skills needed to make the learning of verbs meaningful and an enriching experience. There are twelve practice activities in this workbooklet. Furthermore, these activities are aimed to supplement the lesson on verbs presented in their basic texbook to promote permanent learning. This material also comes with a teaching guide. However, the teacher is free to add, subtract or modify the suggestion given to suit the abilities and needs of his/her particular class. The same is true with the activities presented.

Duration
20 - 30 minutes/activity

Objectives
After performing the activities, the pupils are expected to: use present form of the verb with singular/plural nouns as subjects use the simple past of the verbs commonly used.

Preparation
Pupils should possess the skills in identifying verbs as prerequisite skill before the use of this material.

Procedure
Activity No1 - Action Words 1. Let pupils work individually. 2. Ask pupils to look at the picture and then join a line to the verb that goes with the picture. 3. Conduct the checking of pupils work. Who Does the Action 1. Let the pupils read the sentences. 2. Then, let them answer the questions about the sentences. 3. Discuss with them about the subject used in each sentence. Activity No. 2 - Read and Connect Remember
The simple form of the verb shows present action. Use it when the subject is two or more persons or things. Use it with the pronouns I, we, you and they. Do not use it with he, she and it.

1. Have the pupils read and follow the directions carefully. 2. Have an individual check up of their work. Activity No. 3 & Activity No. 4 1. Ask the pupils to read and follow the directions carefully. 2. After the activity, conduct the checking of pupils answers. Provide them with an answer key on the board. The Simple Form of the Verb 1. Let the pupils read the sentences. 2. Discuss with them the use of the simple form of the verb. The given questions and the rules in the box will serve as your guide in the discussion. Words that show actions are called verbs. They are action words.

The Doer of the Action


Read these sentences. Father goes to work everyday. Mother attends to the meals of the family. She serves eggs, rice and milk at breakfast. We always eat vegetables at noon. Answer these questions. Who goes to work everyday? Who attends to the meals of the family? Who serves eggs, rice and milk at breakfast? Who always eat vegetables at noon? Who is the doer of the action in each sentence? What is the doer of an action called?

Remember
The doer of an action is called the subject.

Activity No. 2 Identifying the Subject


Read each sentence and copy the subject on your answer sheet.

The S- Form

Read these sentences. When does the action happen?

Father works in a car shop.

Do these sentences show action in the present time?

What is the last letter of each verb? Verb + s is called the -s form.

Remember The -s form of the verb shows present action. Use it when the subject is one person or thing. Do not use it with I or you.

The Simple Form of the Verb


Read the sentences below. When does the action happen? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Little girls like to play dolls. Teachers come to school on time. I pray everyday. You hear many stories about ghosts. We visit our grandparents every weekend. They win the clean and green contest.

Do these sentences show action in the present tense? Do the verbs end in s? Read the subjects of the sentences. Are they singular or plural? Verbs in the present tense with plural subjects do not use the -s form of the verb. They use the simple form of the verb.

Knowing the Use of the Present Tense


Read the short story.

Ana and Rosa work in the department store everyday.

After work, they always attend a cooking and baking class. They plan to have a bakeshop someday.

Look at the verbs in the boxes. Do they show present time? verbs showing the present time are said to be in the present tense. Do they tell actions done regularly? What words show that the actions are regular? We call the actions done regularly habitual actions.

Remember
We use the present tense when talking about habitual actions. Two words that signal a habitual action are always and every.

General Truths

Knowing the Use of the Past Tense


Read a short story about Little Jose Rizal.

Little Jose Rizal was a bright boy. He loved to read books. He painted pictures. He molded figures of animals and even people out of clay. He, too, carved things from wood. Well, he liked to play with other children. He played in the nipa hut in their backyard.

What is the action word in each sentence? These action words tell about past actions. They tell what little Jose Rizal did in the past. How does each verb end?

Remember
The past tense of the verb names an action that already happened. Most verbs add -ed to form the past tense but if a verb ends in e, it just adds -d to the simple form of the verb to form its past tense.
