At about 1:30 a.m. August 11., Strathmore RCMP smoothly and effectively responded to a 911 call from a female victim asking for assistance. After speaking with her, the investigative team located her assailant at his residence and attempted to take him into custody. During discussion, he allegedly uttered threats to police and indications were that he had a weapon, which resulted in the area along Wheatland Trail and Willow Drive being cordoned off by assisting officers. An EMS unit was also placed on standby. The RCMP blockades kept residents at a safe distance, while keeping traffic flow in check. Sheriffs and Community Peace Officers also assisted in containing the scene and keeping the public safe. RCMP Sgt. Patricia Neely said that if one weapon is in evidence, it is quite likely there is more than one weapon kept in the home. As a precautionary measure the RCMP North and South Emergency Response Units were called in to assist. The Emergency Response Unit is made up from a variety of members, serving on a full and part time basis. They are specially trained, along with specially trained negotiators, who will speak with the suspect. The goal here is to resolve the situation as peacefully as we can, said Sgt. Neely. The female victim was taken to the Strathmore detachment for her safety. The Emergency Response Units were located at the RCMP detachment ready for deployment. However the situation was safely and carefully contained and the assailant was taken into custody about 2:50 p.m., without incident and the need for tactical response. Continued on Page 2

Auction success
Morgan Lee Times Contributor On August 3 members of the Cheadle 4-H club auctioned off a charity steer at the World Professional Chuckwagon Association races, with proceeds of the sale going to the Wheatland County Food Bank. The sale of the steer exceeded all expectations, being sold and donated back about five times, reaching a grand total of $25,250. This is not the first time the club has auctioned off a charity steer; last year they sold one at their district 4-H show for $7,000, an impressive sum of money, but nothing compared to the success this year. We had a charity steer last year but we sold it at our district 4-H show so there wasnt as many buyers and it wasnt as big of a crowd to sell it to, said Erin Warrack, member of the Cheadle 4-H club. So with this venue and with all the people that we had, there was a lot of opportunities for us to sell it and donate it back and get more money to raise for the food bank. The club partnered with Encana for the second year in a row. Encana promised to match the money raised, dollar for dollar, making the total donated to the Wheatland County Food Bank $50,500. The club was hoping a bigger venue would help them raise more money, and they were certainly right; it was an important choice to switch to the chuckwagon races. I guess its just that there would definitely be more buyers and more support for the food bank, said Sabrina Kooistra, vice-president of Cheadle 4-H club. The members were thrilled with the support they got from the companies who bought and donated back the steer. Northwest Livestock, TERA Environmental Ltd, Roadtrek Motorhomes, Global Training Centre and finally Boots and Boost Tires and Performance all bought and donated the steer back to the cause. The steer is set to go to market yet again with the final proceeds adding to the grand total. I think its pretty awesome that they supported and kept going back in, like five times, said Kooistra. The auction and the combined participation of the Strathmore Stampede, 4-H members as well as parents, and of course the buyers made this charity auction as successful as it was. It promotes a sort of local connectedness, and it promotes 4-H as what 4-H is about, its about giving back to the community and its really good to just give back said District Representative for Cheadle 4-H, Mike Brewin The community supports 4-H, buying the steers, sponsoring the sale, its just a way to payback some of the money back to the community, said Warrack. As a small club, this is a big initiative to take on and the food bank is certainly grateful. It was an amazing donation, says Wheatland County Food Bank Trea-

As a small club with only 14 members, this was an ambitious undertaking and luckily the kids had a lot of support from their parents. Theyre 14 kids with big dreams, said Clarence Kooistra, father of members Sabrina and Maria. As for next year, the Cheadle 4-H club plans on keeping with the trend of their large donations, and theyve decided that this venue is key. Theyre not letting the success get to their heads though. Commenting on their plans for next year, Sabrina Kooistra said, I think wed probably try to do that same thing again, I think it worked pretty well.
RCMP put up a blockade along Wheatland Trail and Willow Drive on Aug. 11, to keep residents safe while a man with a weapon was convinced to surrender safely. The RCMP Emergency Response Unit was called in Aug. 11, to standby at the Strathmore RCMP detachment in case the situation intensified, however, they were able to stand down when the suspect surrendered peacefully.

Agri-trend visits Strathmore

Morgan Lee Times Contributor This past week Agri-Trend finished their bi-annual training event in Strathmore. Agri-Trend is a professional coaching organization that helps farmers with various aspects of their profession by pairing them with coaches that are in their area. Agri-Trend trains six different types of coaches, from marketing coaches to geo coaches, helping farmers keep up with the fast-paced changes that occur all the time in all different aspects of farming. The reason that farmers work with an Agri-Trend coach is because their world is changing so fast, and urban people have no clue as to the amount of technology that farmers are integrating in their operation and the rate of change, said Chief Executive Officer and founder of Agri-Trend, Robert Saik. The world of farming is changing drastically year by year, and Agri-Trend is committed to keeping farmers up to date and helping them with the new issues that, in the past, farmers may have never had to deal with. We just saw some statistics today that 51 per cent of farmers will not be transferring their farm land to their children (and) 70 per cent of farmers dont have a long-term business plan, said Saik, so weve got to work with these guys on getting some stuff in place so that theyre ready for the transitions that are going to happen. Agri-Trend trains coaches in their yearly winter and summer training sessions like the one that Strathmore hosted this past week. With their network of over 200 coaches throughout North America, Agri-Trend is confident they can keep farmers in the know. When a farmer works with us, and the reason farmers work with us, is they make more money because we provide agronomic leadership we provide independent unbiased advice, because were not trying to sell something, says Saik. Were really looking at the gamut of science out there, (we) bring the farmer more confidence his decision making. The training was a success, with over 200 people from farming communities across Canada and the United States coming together for the workshops, to hear speeches from experts in various fields as well as having a little fun with a softball tournament. Were always innovating so if we dont bring what I call the Tribe, if we dont bring the Tribe together twice a year then people get left behind, because theyre working in faraway places and in small towns, said Saik. We need to bring them together to connect, to bring them up to speed on what were doing as an organization, what changes or enhancements were making to our processes, train them technically and probably the biggest reason is to give them a sense of camaraderie. As for location, Saik says Strathmore was a good fit for what Agri-Trend is trying to accomplish through this Summer Training course.

Sensory stimulation cart calms hospital residents

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Dealing with someone suffering from dementia or behavioural issues can be tough on both staff and patients. Sedation isnt always the way to go, but sometimes options are limited, which is why Continuing Care at the Strathmore Hospital purchased a sensory stimulation cart last August. Its very good in long term care and any dementia unit, I would encourage the proper use. Its not a babysitting tool, thats been a learning curve for us, balancing how much to use it, said Gwen Cyr, activity convener for Continuing Care. Some staff think it should be 24/7 but if you do that its not going to be effective so you have to know when its perfect to have it on and when its not. You dont want to overuse it so that when you need it, it doesnt work. If you give them the sensory when they dont have behaviours then when they do have behaviours its nothing new, if you see it all the time you cant focus on that to stop the behaviour, The cart has a bubble tube filled with water and fish. It lights up with four different colours and there are fibre optic cables attached to it which also light up. There is a projector on with a number of videos, ones of flowers, and stars and even an electric animated musical video. Cyr said the cart usually stays in the common area. The staff had tried using the cart in a few residents rooms but found that it works best where everyone has access to it. Being able to completely eliminate the use of medication is just not feasible, but the cart has helped and in some cases worked better than some of the meds. It all depends on each resident. We did notice with one resident it worked better than the behaviour meds and I honestly dont know what her meds status is at, but when we were trying to balance it definitely came in handy, said Cyr. A projector is kept in the residents room 24/7 and if she is having a moment then they will turn the lights out and the projector on for her to help calm her. Over the past year staff have learned which residents the cart works for and when it works. They are noticing what signs there are that indicate it may be time to use the sensory cart. I think the ones that dont have behaviours are like you and me where theyre just intrigued, I still find that the staff find it calming at times, said Cyr.

Our feet are amazing. They are relatively small for the weight they have to carry but contain an intricate network of bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles to support that weight. Problems can occur with our feet and its important not to ignore them. Pain, numbness, swelling and other symptoms should be checked to rule out major problems. Pepto-Bismol can be taken as a preventative for travelers diarrhea at a dose of (2 tablets 4 x daily for up to 3 weeks). For treatment, the usual dose is 2 tablets every 30 minutes up to 8 doses. It does contain a salicylate and shouldnt be used in children under 12 and with caution in those taking anticoagulant drugs or who have gastric ulcers. Epilepsy affects 60 million people worldwide and about one-third of those are not able to control their seizures. Research is being done on a new device where an electrode is inserted between the skull and the brain and it records continuous brain activity. The signals are analyzed and a readout on a handheld device can predict when a seizure will occur. It will be a definite plus to some epileptics. Many admissions to hospital are due to problems with medications. Many of these are preventable by simply understanding the medications you are taking and taking them according to your doctors instructions. Our pharmacists can help you learn about your medications. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Answering them is all part of our job as your pharmacist.

Dreams coming true for arts community

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter After years of planning and dreaming, arts groups in Strathmore now get to see their hopes come true. It was in 2010 that things began to really take shape when the Hope Bridges Society applied for and received a grant to conduct a Community Arts Centre feasibility study. The study was just the push needed to help the arts scene get going and nearly three years later an arts council was formed. I am so happy. I got here 11 years ago, joined Wheatland Society of Arts, and watched it - along with so many other arts groups - struggle, so you knew there needed to be more awareness and development in the arts, said Brandy Hebbes, board member of the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective. People dont even realize how many arts groups exist in the area. Over the years these little arts groups would go in search of funding to promote their art group but were continually turned down. Town, county and government insisted you need to have an arts council if you want to be considered seriously. And that is exactly what Strathmore has now with the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC). In 2012 SRAC became incorporated, and the nineperson board has spent the past year focusing on strategic planning and setting goals. The ultimate goal is seeing an arts and culture facility created; something Hebbes said will likely be years in the making. One of the biggest short term goals is to increase awareness and just let people (artists and art lovers) know that were here and we want to identify, support, and promote the arts and artisans said Hebbes. Our focus is to provide opportunities to the Strathmore and region artist, but some of that would entail bringing in performing groups from other areas for the region to enjoy as well. SRAC is trying to gather artists and artisans to be members. Even if you just enjoy art and want to have a voice in what is being brought to Strathmore and the region, you are welcome to be a member. Anybody is welcome to be a member of SRAC as it is a membership society. SRAC will first be introducing themselves to the public at the end of September when they host an Arts and Sounds in the Park Festival. At the festival priority will be given to Strathmore and Wheatland County artists. Hebbes said they will definitely accept applications from artists from other areas, but local artists and artisans will be first to fill the openings. As the festival expands they will be able to include more artists from outlying areas. After the festival, SRAC will plan a few things but the goal is to be a facilitator of sorts, assisting groups with events and partnerships. We are compiling a list of locations that artists can utilize whether they are performing, displaying or doing classes. SRAC can be found on Facebook by going to Strathmore Regional Arts Collective. There, applications can be found for the upcoming festival and people can keep up to date on the latest information coming from the collective.

Washing cars for cancer

The Youth Club of Strathmore kids were out with their sponges, hoses and mop buckets on Aug. 9 for their first charity car wash. Through the car wash the club raised $261.05 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Part of the Youth Clubs mandate is to give back to the community, and each week of summer camp participants have taken part in a community service. In previous weeks there have been food and bottle drives, and a skate park cleanup.

Guarding the garden

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Gardeners in the Town of Strathmore should be on the lookout for Fire blight in their bushes and trees. Commercial growers say it is the number one killer for their product in Southern Alberta. We get Fire blight in the area every year, said Karen Wournell, Supervisor at Eagle Lake Garden Centre. With lots of rain, you get lots of different bacteria and fungus popping up. The blight is a bacterium that affects mainly apple, crab apple, hawthorn, pear and mountain ash trees, as well as cotoneasters, raspberry, saskatoon, almond and rose shrubs. Check closely if you see browning of flowers, buds, or brown/black stems and bark. It often affects the plant by curling the tips of new growth into a shape that looks like a Shepherds hook. The bacterium does overwinter and new shoots will grow through the hook, spreading to new growth. Fire blight spreads from plant to plant, through rain, carried by insects (bees) and wind, or can spread via pruning shears. Damage and open wounds on trees let bacteria settle in the weakened unprotected area and infect it. It is difficult to treat, but some people use copper sulphate sprays in the spring to contain the spores. Wournell said application has to be timed just right when using the spray. She recommends the preferred and more successful method, which is to cut six inches below the infected site and burn the branches. If you dont have a fire pit, wrap up the cuttings and place the sealed package in the garbage. Dont dispose of the branches in compost or a recycle site, as the disease will recycle itself. Usually chips are used as ground cover for other trees and the bacteria will spread to the new site. Be sure to clean your tools after each cut by dipping them in bleach or alcohol, so you dont spread anything to successive cuts. Black Knot fungus is also on the loose in local gardens. Its favourite house is mayday and chokecherry tree branches. You can spot it on branches by its black clumping, giving the branch a barbed wire resemblance. Use the same procedure described for Fire blight removal. Every year, Wheatland County posts the prohibited and noxious weed list on the County Website, where pictures of weeds that need to be pulled can be seen. Some grow in flower beds and seem pretty, like the noxious weed Himalayan Balsam and sweet chamomile, but if they arent removed seeds travel and infest crops. Farmers must employ costly weed killers to eradicate them. In case you arent convinced, the Alberta government site has an interactive map, showing where in the province prohibited weeds have spread and are most common. See www.agric.gov.ab.ca/app68/listings/weeds/ weeds_map.jsp The Town of Strathmore will be doing their part to keep weeds down and will be spraying starting Aug. 20. The areas they will be covering are linked in a map at www.townofstrathmore. ca/news . A little vigilance in the garden can help our gardens and trees flourish, for the enjoyment of everyone and protect the livelihood of our rural neighbours.

1st Annual Chamber Music Festival

Manny Everett Times Contributor Local artistic director Keith Hamm from Rosebud recently started a grassroots project committed to bringing world-class musical performances to the rural communities in the Badlands. From July 29 through to and including Aug. 4 a spectacular lineup of some of Canadas finest young chamber musicians graced the humble stage at the Rosebud Community Church. Three quarters of the string quartet consisted of Sheila Jaff from Montreal on the Francesco Gobetti violin (171015) generously on loan to her by Canimex; Aaron Schwebel also from Montreal on the violin; Arnold Choi on the Antonio Starivari cello generously on loan to him from the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank. Making up the fourth in the quartet was one of Rosebuds finest young musicians, Keith Hamm on the viola. Hamm is the founder and artistic director of the Rosebud Chamber Music festival. The quartet performed the pieces from String Quartet, Op 17 No. 6 by Franz Joseph Haydn. It was a wonderfully playful performance as the stringed instruments came to life under the fingers of the artists. The music danced in the air as the four instruments became one in the piece by Haydn. Peter Longworth, an established pianist who has played all over the world, is one of Canadas most sought after pianists of his generation. He graced the stage in Rosebud with his powerful performance from Johann Sebastian Bachs Chaconne in d minor (BWV

1004). He prefaced the piece with a favourite quote from Johannes Brahms: On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind [4]. All five musicians, coming together in Antonin Dvoraks Piano Quintet No.1 in A major, Op.81, played the final performance. The music came alive on the stage and engulfed the audience with its powerful performance. Hamm was pleased with the turnout over the weeks performances in Rosebud, Drumheller and Three Hills, and looks forward to more events in the future.

Fern
Female,
DSH - black and white

Born: Jan. 2006

Fern was rescued in the spring of 2007. She loves to have her back scratch and will let you hold her gently as you feed her temptation cat treats. Fern goes nuts for canned food and treats and this has been the key in gaining her trust with new people, as she does act very shy when meeting someone new. Fern does excellent with other cats and should ideally be adopted into a home as a companion to another cat.

incidents. With the upcoming municipal elections, it is important to know that the populace is watching what the elected officials are doing. There is a strong desire to see successful communities develop. Authenticity, transparency and respect are priorities in making collaborative relationships that help us transition with changes on the horizon as the number of urban dwellers increases. The privilege of serving our communities in public office is something that more of us need to exercise our will, courage, physical and mental toughness to participate in. Add a sense of humour and an ability to handle stress and you may not believe the difference you can make. Nomination papers for all the positions are available at the Town and the County offices. Consider taking a leap into leadership and shaping the future. Respectfully submitted, Marcy L Field, Strathmore

Leading for the future

To the Editor Leadership is a privilege and it is important that communication within these roles is humanized, personal and respectful. A popular idiom actions speak louder than words resonates when reflecting on the actions of local elected officials in the recent Heritage Days Parade. They failed to respect proper protocol by demanding that they be placed in front of our local MLA, Jason Hale. This did not go unnoticed by people watching the parade who commented on how important these individuals must see themselves. This is one small yet public example of Strathmores current leadership. The world as we know it continues to change despite a desire by some that it remain the same. Some things should remain the same like respect and consideration of others. The way people discover and create news changed with the emergence of social media. It has brought forward a growing awareness of what people are seeking in leadership. Old school leadership that pushed its weight around no longer draws support from the general populace as they become aware of what used to be behind the scenes

This very inspiring characterization of old age fits with the concept of successful agingand provides the view that it is possible to enjoy your later years in a way that exceeds your expectations.

Community first
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor At the July 29th Strathmore Rural Fire Fighting Association (SRFFA) meeting, a call went out to put aside personal arguments and think of the community first. Think of the community. This shouldnt be personal. We are protecting the community. We have to keep that in mind, said Brad Garner, to all members. Two suspended firefighters were given the opportunity to return to duty under a one year incident free probation period. Both men have selflessly responded to the call and the communities need by agreeing to return. Some observers from the Carseland community felt the terms of reinstatement did not take into consideration the mens long standing service record and they indicated the terms were too intense. Others questioned whether judgements were being applied universally to all firefighters within the association. Garner hoped embers of simmering resentments in the community, fueled by a few recent altercations and arguments over fire issues, could be dispersed so healing in the association can begin. There is still interest in the Carseland community to separate into two separate associations. It remains to be seen whether President Bruce Rande can meet the challenge to bridge the current gap and bring both sides back together under one roof. Rande committed to monitoring the situation closely and said that he will take all necessary measures to restore normal operation in both halls. Carseland had only two to three members responding to the 11 calls done in June. Members of the Strathmore crew responded to make up a full response crew. Carseland businessmen and community members, observing at the meeting, were worried about inadequate fire coverage in their area. Crew numbers were down as some of the Carseland members were on Leave of Absence, for personal reasons. Rande said it is a volunteer service and if members needed leave, the Association cannot force them to return. A recruiting drive will be held in the near future to boost volunteer numbers. Also, a vote of confidence was given by the SRFFA to the interim Chief Mark Heilman, who is currently covering both halls. He is the best person for the position. He has stepped up and taken flack for something that was not of his doing, said Rande.I commend him and have seen nothing but support for him. The association has been through an inferno in the last year, due to a bookkeeping scandal and resulting legal proceedings. The board has gone into strict adherence of policies to rectify matters and put the association back on even footing. The recent deliverance of 2012 funding by the County of Wheatland helped the association pay $6,000 of back bills. However, a spot fire cropped up at the July 29th meeting, when Carseland Ag Society notified them that a $12,000 mortgage payment had been overlooked and was two years in arrears. This requires a show of good faith, said Ag President Rita Krugar. I need some kind of information to take back to the board. The SRFFA requested the documentation and time to set a recommended action. We need a common sense solution and settle this in the best way. Our intent is to pay but the timeline is in question, said Rande. The board is maintaining a tight hold on its spending, requiring receipts and quotes before approving funds. Several department members had paid for necessary equipment out of pocket and funds were not delivered unless receipts and approval were given. The process left delays in equipment repairs, minor purchases and department members needing recertification and drivers licensing. Under current National Safety Standards and the Alberta Traffic Safety act, all firefighting vehicles require regular maintenance, safety and equipment checks, trip reports, and extensive five year record keeping for all drivers of fire vehicles. Policies need to be in place to ensure drivers are adequately qualified, provided with training and their driving skills evaluated. Any traffic infractions for drivers have to be reported. If any of the standards are not maintained, stringent penalties are levied to the registered owners of the vehicle and the drivers, and can even extend to persons loading, unloading, rearranging loads, record keeping or directing traffic, if it is proved that they were aware that the standard requirements were not in place. For a complete standards list see www. trans.gov.ab.ca/Content/doctype276/production/ edmanual.htm or call Vehicle Safety and Carrier Services Branch, Carrier Services Section:(403) 340-5444.

Record setting charity walk

Morgan Lee Times Contributor The final tally is in for the May 29th Western Financial Group Support The Cause Day walk. Over 1,500 Western Financial Group employees participated in the 9th annual walk, raising a record breaking $137,845 that will be donated to various different charities. This includes community infrastructure grants, which help to rebuild or refurbish local community facilities, like libraries. The money also goes to student bursaries that help students pay for secondary education as well as a Habitat for Humanity program and a Vision Care program. This years success was tremendous because weve raised the most amount of money weve ever raised for the Support the Cause event, said Eric Michalko, manager of sponsorships, digital marketing and public relations for Western Financial Group. Our previous record was in 2012 when we raised $90,000, so you can see that thats quite a big jump in terms of setting a new record. Since 2005 this 5km walk has raised over $563,000 for the aforementioned charities. These events are very important to (Western Financial Group), we are very passionate about giving back to the community, we have a deep presence and commitment to our local communities. We always try to give back and help support those communities where we live and where we work, said Michalko. The money was raised through the combined efforts of Western Financial Group and employees. Pledges from employees were accepted, and on top

Participants walk five kilometers despite the pouring rain on May 29 for the Western Financial Groups Support the Cause Day walk, where in total the over 1,500 employees who participated from over 100 locations across Western Canada raised a record breaking $137,845 for local charities.

Movin on up to the west side!

Pat Fule Fule for Thought By the time you read this, my family and I will have moved. Now, some of you may be sad, some may be surprised, and some may even be planning a celebration (Ive already heard rumours of a block party in the Cambridge area)! I actually told a few Cambridge neighbours that their property values may go up, now that the Fules are leaving (sorry about your luck, Strathmore Lakes)! I have helped people move, and have gratefully been helped, on many moves. In 1990, for example, we sold one house, moved into a basement rental suite, moved some stuff to Canmore and back for a summer job, bought, and moved to a mobile home (thanks, Mr Lein!). Finally by December, we finished at a split level house (I have come to know that I may have burned some bridges here). In fact, Deb bought the last home at a wine and cheese party! She only called me over when the deal was sealed, and I had to sign something! Now, because of all these moves, I took a lot of good natured ribbing from my teacher pals. Some would say that my Hungarian gypsy background was at work. Sure, my dads family were Hungarian, but it doesnt mean were gypsies but I dont even know a gypsy! Others meanly said it was because Hungarys been invaded so often, your people are always on the run (oh yes, comrade just park your Russian T-34 tank on my vegetable garden!) Just because you may have moved five times in a span of six months why do they have to judge? Oh wait, yeah they do get to judge, because theyd been moving me all those times! When we moved furniture and things to our latest house, I never thought wed be there for 16 years. The problem was, we moved a lot of big, heavy things in to the basement before it was fully finished. When the basement was done, it was impossible to move out the large hide-a-bed! My friend Brad and I tried every which way to turn, lift, and move it out. We even managed to almost get it up from the basement, but we dragged the hide-abeds feet across the newly painted walls, scarring them in the process! So we decided: enough was enough (I quietly hated this hide-a-bed anyway, so the decision was easy)! My pal Brad and I grabbed a sledgehammer and axe, and began wailing away at this beast of a couch! There were couch bits, foam, metal, and shrapnel flying everywhere Oh, the humanity (Hindenberg reference)! At times I heard Deb call, is everything alright down there? Oh, everythings alright were just making some furniture adjustments! We carried up the biggest pieces first, and on the third trip, Debbie asked, what are those things youre bringing up? I answered: we had to take apart the hide-a-bed, weve numbered the pieces, and were bringing them up! In fact, heres Part D, that matches up with Part C, that Brad brought up before! Debbie, being as smart as she is, didnt believe a word, and just shook her head. This was one hide-abed that would never have attitude again! It had to go, and we murdered it! On one of my other friends moves, I failed miserably! It was a bitterly cold January morning, and my friends stuff had been in a trailer all night in -30 degree temperature. Did I say all night? Now, a smart person would think, hey this is fricken cold be careful! But no, I waded into the open truck trailer, and grabbed on to the washing machine. I had only begun carrying this thing wearing gloves, when I realized, I had no grip. I threw off my gloves, clenched the washer, and began carting it down to (of course) the basement! Part of the way down, my fingers felt like they were on fire! I tried to hold on, I swear I did, but I couldnt! I loosened my grip, and my pal Scott, bore the full brunt of the weight (I had frost bitten my finger pads, they were red, burning, and useless)! I had to go home, and I left them one mover short! Not all parts of a move are funny, and while packing up our things, and my parents photo albums, I found something that took away my breath. I had come across my parents individual family albums. In my mothers album, folded away carefully, was a short, typed note. If youve been with me for a while, you know that two of my older brothers died as babies. In the album, was a simple and neatly folded letter. The letter was from one of the nurses, a Catholic sister on the hospital staff. The letter said how sorry she, and the whole staff were, at the loss of Baby John Fule. It was dated, Oct.10, 1955. I was dumb-founded. I had never seen this. I knew my two older brothers died as babies, but here was a letter that showed the tragic feelings of that hospitals staff. I thought about how preparations were made, for a baby who would never come home. Years later, my brothers are never far from my mind, and my remaining brother has come from Vancouver to help us. The move is on, I get to stay in Strathmore (by choice), and my family is intact. Everyone is stressed at our house with the move, but Im so grateful were alive to feel that stress. So, bring it all on (as Deb would say), and lets get this show on the road! Strathmore Lakes, here come the Fules maybe well wind up with a CEE-MENT pond (like the Clampets)!

of that Western Financial Group donated $50 for each employee that participated in the walk. Our success speaks to the dedication of our employees and their commitment to the communities they live and work in, said Michalko in a press release.

Peace officer emergency response, pursuit policy adopted by council

Classes begin August 28, 2013
Golden Hills School Division #75 435A Highway #1, Strathmore, Alberta T1P 1J4 Phone 934-5121 Fax 934-5125 1-800-320-3739
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Last month the town council adopted a new Emergency Response/Pursuit Policy at the request of the Solicitor General Jonathon Denis. Strathmore Community Peace Officer Teresa Fuchs brought the policy forward for approval in July. Our president of the Alberta Community Police Association who does the EVOC course that we took, Emergency Vehicle Operations (Course), this was a policy that he put into place at Provost when he worked there, said Fuchs. After we finished the course he sent me a copy of his policy and being the president of Community Peace Officers it was a very good policy. The policy is to help establish guidelines and proper procedures for responding to emergencies, proper reporting procedures and training guidelines for all officers in the department. Before being able to respond to an emergency call and utilizing emergency equipment, each peace officer must have proper authorization. In order to the have the proper authorization, each peace officer must complete a 40 hour Emergency Vehicle Operations Course that is based on police curriculum. All peace officers must also take EVOC recertification training every five years. According to the policy, peace officers may respond to emergency calls and use emergency equipment when there is an injury collision, while providing backup to police or peace officers when there is the belief that the officer is in serious danger and the peace officer is the closest assistance available, when attending a fire or medical emergency at the specific request of the fire or EMS department and for any emergency situation if requested by the police to attend in an emergency response capacity. Any peace officer that chooses to respond in an emergency capacity is to notify the police by radio of their response to that particular situation. In the case of a pursuit the policy states that a motor vehicle pursuit presents an extreme risk to the public safety and shall not be conducted by any peace officer appointed under the Peace Officer Act. The peace officer is expected to contact their local police and inform them of the situation, give them the vehicle make and direction of travel. There are stipulations and circumstances when a peace officer may be closing the distance, or involved in a catch up situation which arent classed as a pursuit. I read this over and its a great looking policy, I like the directions especially in regards to pursuitsthat direction is of course that they shall not happen, said Councillor Bob Sobol at the July meeting. The policy provides specific guidelines for other situations a peace officer may be involved in regarding emergency response or pursuit.

Every year during the Strathmore Stampede Chinook Credit Union hosts a beef on a bun lunch. The past few years they have also requested non-perishable food donations for the Wheatland Society Food Bank. This year donations exceeded the hopes of the Credit Union with $867 cash being donated, and countless food items. Im pretty pleased, said Branch Manager Larry Betts. Ed Zahariuk (l) Wheatland Society Food Bank representative and Larry Betts.

Neighbourhood Watch comes to Strathmore

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Neighbourhood Watch has come to Strathmore as a way to respond to reports of crimes last year. Community members, along with the Strathmore RCMP, formed the group to help try to bring an end to what seemed like an increasing amount of property and vehicle-related crimes. Essentially it was formed in response to crime that was occurring specifically in Strathmore and a way to get community members involved with whats happening in Strathmore, said Const. Shannon White with the Strathmore RCMP detachment and liaison for the group. Neighbourhood Watch is an extra set of eyes out there in the community looking for those suspicious activities because no one knows their community better than those who live in it. A police car driving by may not recognize a vehicle as not belonging on that street, but a neighbour who knows that their neighbour is out of town and that vehicle shouldnt be there will. The goal of Neighbourhood Watch is, with the support of the RCMP, learn to recognize suspicious activities, when to report to police, encouraging people to get to know their neighbours and provide those additional eyes in the area. White said once every two months a meeting is held for Neighbourhood Watch members. She said they go over a number of topics like crime statistics, how to report a crime, when to report a crime, when to call 911 and recognizing suspicious activity. The meetings and training helps differentiate what may be just a person walking down the street versus someone suspicious scoping out the area. If there are any concerns in a neighbourhood a watch member lives in, they can also be brought forward into the meetings for discussion. I think one of the most surprising things that I discovered is that people didnt know what number to call. What were finding is people are calling 911 for everything because they dont know the right number to call, and whats happening is were finding a very delayed dispatch, said White. People didnt realize the 934-3968 is the office hours but for non-emergency office hours its 934-3535. The difference between Citizens On Patrol and Neighbourhood Watch is you dont have to leave your house; its just about being aware about whats going on in your community and knowing your neighbours. People are calling in now more when they recognize suspicious activity and weve been really successful in locating and charging people who are responsible, said White. She is seeing success from the program and said they are catching the suspects. White said if someone does call in suspicious activity its important they are available for call back. If its a crime in progress, White said, thats a 911 call and the caller should remain on the phone to keep the police informed about what is happening, if the suspect has taken off and which direction. Anyone can join Neighbourhood Watch; White says the more people involved the better. Those wanting to get involved can call the Strathmore detachment at 403-934-3968 and ask for Const. Shannon White.

Blood clinic makes way to Strathmore

Canadian Blood Services As a result of nearly 12,000 unfilled appointments so far this summer, coupled with constant hospital demand, Canadian Blood Services is forecasting a need for 51,000 appointments to be filled between now and Labour Day to replenish stocks. For that reason, Canadian Blood Services has extended the Blood Signal until Sept. 3. The Blood Signal is a call to action for Canadians to rally together and book a blood donation when the need is greatest - like now. Canadian Blood Services operates a national system and we are able to draw on our national reserves at times like these, says Mike Nichol, Regional Director of Donor and Clinic Services. Every summer is a challenge, but this year the trend is especially concerning as there are 51,000 appointments to fill between now and Sept. 3 to keep blood inventory at an acceptable level. The summer months are always challenging for Canadas blood supply and we are not alone; donations are soft in other countries as well. Blood systems in the U.S. and the U.K. have recently issued urgent appeals for blood donors due to fewer donations being made this summer and overall blood inventory levels falling. No patient goes without blood, Mike Nichol. But with so many open appointments we need Canadians to book and donate now. We ask those who already have an appointment to make every effort to keep it and, if you can, bring a friend to donate. To book an appointment is easy, please visit www.blood.ca or call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283). Making an appointment now will ensure that patient needs are met this summer. Residents of Strathmore are asked to give blood at their local community donor clinic at the Strathmore Civic Centre (120 Brent Boulevard) on Friday, Aug. 23 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the supply of blood and blood products in all provinces and territories outside of Quebec. Canadian Blood Services also oversees the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, and provides national leadership for organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Canadian Blood Services operates 42 permanent collection sites and more than 20,000 donor clinics annually. The provincial and territorial Ministries of Health provide operational funding to Canadian Blood Services. The federal government, through Health Canada, is responsible for regulating the blood system.

Local musicians ready to rock Aspen Crossing

Leanna Simon Aspen Crossing A train themed business just outside of Mossleigh is set to host the first annual Southern Alberta Music Festival on Aug. 24. This all day outdoor concert will consist of a variety of country, blues, folk and good old fashioned rock n roll, while featuring talented local artists. Jason Thornhill from Aspen Crossing has been working very hard to set up this event, says organizer/musician Larry Vannatta. He is a great support of Southern Alberta music, giving artist this opportunity to perform an hour showcase with a professional festival atmosphere. A professional sound man has been hired complete with full production sound, stage recording, and lights. While at the music festival people will be able to explore vendors, concessions and a beer garden, while listening to talented Southern Alberta performers. The festival will be opening at 9 a.m. with seating on a first-comefirst-serve basis. Be sure to remember your chairs if youre getting general admission tickets. The performers will then start at 11 a.m. and continue all day until midnight, explains Thornhill. Over 13 bands and artists will be rocking the stage including Drew Gregory, Lyndsay Butler, Larry Vannatta, Tanya Ryan, Melinda Bailey and Tin & The Toad. Aspen Crossing recently announced they will be donating a portion of all ticket sales to the Town of High River Disaster Relief Fund. After the flood Aspen Crossing was honoured to take in several amazing High River families in our RV park. Listening to all the stories of what they and others went through and are still going through really hit home for us. Were happy to donate a portion of ticket sales to High River, it means a lot to all of us, says Thornhill. So I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a great day of live music while supporting local artists. And this year, its for a very special cause. Strathmore Terry Fox Run may be cancelled

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore could end up losing the annual Terry Fox Run this year if an organizer for the Sept. 15 event isnt found. It would be such a shame for the people of Strathmore to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terrys legacy alive as every community no matter how big or small can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000, says Rhonda Risebrough, Provincial Director for the Terry Fox Foundation Alberta, Northwest Territories & Nunavut. The event is coming up fast, and Risebrough said if they cant find an organizer they will have to cancel this years event, something the Terry Fox Foundation is hoping to avoid. I think the most important thing is just to continue Terrys legacy in Strathmore, we dont necessarily want to skip a year if we can help it. If we cant find an organizer for this year then we will start looking for one for next year but its just nice to have that tradition carry, said Risebrough. We dont expect a certain amount to be raised, theres no minimum to be raised its just an opportunity to give everyone a chance to take part. She said the level of commitment from the organizer wouldnt be more than a couple of hours per week, and could even be much less than that. The first and most pressing issue the organizer would have to deal with is contacting the town to see if the route from last year, which runs along part of Brent Blvd, is available. If not, then they would need to track down a new one, which could take a little time. After that the foundation would send out posters, pledge sheets and info for the Facebook and Twitter pages for the organizer to be able to promote the run. The day of the run, Sept. 15, the organizer would need to commit to the full day, and would need to find volunteers to help with registration. Risebrough said the foundation would also be able to spread the word and try to help find volunteers if needed. Thats really the pressing thing is finding an organizer willing to take it on and make sure those logistics are looked after first and foremost, said Risebrough. A group or an individual may take on the role as run organizer for Strathmores 2013 Terry Fox Run. Since the Marathon of Hope in 1980 the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $600 million and has helped shape cancer research. The foundation donates 84 cents of every dollar donated to cancer research in Terrys name. Anyone interested in taking on the role of run organizer can contact Rhonda Risebrough at the Terry Fox Foundation by calling 1-888-836-9786 or by emailing abntnu@terryfoxrun.org.

Empty NEstErs
In a matter of weeks my wife and I will be empty nesters. One daughter is starting year two of Vancouver Film school, the other is starting at tyndale University College in toronto. From one of the smallest places in Canada, Carseland, to two of the largest cities. Empty nesters - Im not quite sure what that will mean. Im expecting a few less trips to strathmore as there will be no more High school activities to schedule in. Our house may be a little quieter, though our girls were never all that rowdy. Will it feel like Lynnette and I are newlyweds again? No one in the house but us two? I hope that we have prepared our daughters for the future that awaits them. they are both very responsible and respectful individuals. they are great girls. I have no worries about them. But I do realize that any real input into their lives is now really over. It makes me think of the proverb: train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (proverbs 22: 6) As parents, we want our children to succeed. We want them to be successful and contributing members of society. We want them to be law abiding citizens who have great friends around them and who make good decisions even in stressful times. But this doesnt happen by itself. Children who became successful adults didnt do so by accident. somewhere along the way they had someone who cared for them and loved them and encouraged them and corrected them along the way. sometimes we parents point fingers at our children or make comments that make it sound as if they are terrible kids. But if we are doing that, we are really making a statement about ourselves and our parenting that we have done. We need to be deliberate about pouring into our childrens lives in such a way that they know what responsible and caring people are like. so as I look ahead and realize my training phase of parenting is over, I want to encourage those of you who still have the joy of parenting your children at home. Enjoy it. take time to show your children how to become what you want them to become. Be clear with them of what is right and wrong. show them how to forgive and to love and to care and to be generous and to care for the less fortunate. In only a few short years you will be where I am, an empty nester whose training days have come and gone. may you enjoy the time you have left to pour into their lives. Huxteds builds a full recycling facility

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore is slated to be the home of a new top of the line recycling facility, according to Colin Huxted, owner of H&H Huxted. On April 19, 2012 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the town and Huxted regarding the operations of the recycle park. Huxted officially takes over operations Jan. 2014, but for now there are a few growing pains as they prepare for the new facility. The changes that have occurred at the recycle yard are the result of H&H Huxteds intention to construct a facility down there, theyre going to build a building on the site. Weve had to kind of shuffle things around to accommodate the future construction of the building, said Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering for the town. Theres not a lot of space for users in the reduced space that weve allocated and so weve asked some of our users to park outside of the gates and then walk into the area to give us a little more room to operate and not create an unsafe situation for the operation. Though the move may be a pain for now for some recycle yard users, the benefits of the new facility will make things more bearable. The new building will contain a shop, office and a new recycling facility. Continued on Page 21

Groundwork has begun on the recycle yard transformation. A new building is being built that will house a new shop, office and recycling facility. Cory Clark, operations manager for H&H Huxted was happy to see things moving for the new building.

Recycle yard gets major transformation

Continued from Page 20 Its going to have a big baler so were not making such a big carbon imprint hauling all that paper and cardboard and plastics in. Instead of hauling it all in to Calgary, well be baling it and when we have a semi load well be shipping it, said Huxted. The new facility will be able to accept construction materials like drywall, shingles and lumber. There are also other benefits to the everyday user once H&H Huxteds takes over operations. There will be curbside (recycling), and its totally optional. There already is Daisy Recycling; we wont be affecting them at all its just whoever wants the carts. Its actually a pretty neat system; there are different coloured bags for different products. You put your stuff in the different coloured bags and then into the cart. Then our truck comes by fully automated and it dumps it, it will take it to the plant and it will unload it there, said Huxted. He said the bins will fit perfectly in pantries, kitchens and garages; you set the bags up in a little holder and throw your cardboard into one, paper into another and plastic into a third. When full just tie them up and throw them in the plastic cart, set it out and it will be picked up. Huxted said they also plan to offer recycling to county residents, but instead of carts they will have bins. County residents will be able to have a bin sitting in their yard, and that will be dumped once a month or every three months depending on how much it will be used. Huxted predicts the service will probably be the cost of having satellite TV. Huxted said his plan is to turn it into a total recycling facility that will help reduce Strathmores carbon imprint. Well have the best recycling facility for the size of town in Alberta when were finished, and it will save people from having to go to the landfill because most of the stuff we can recycle, said Huxted. The 10-year arrangement with the town has Huxteds taking care of the recycling yard services at its current level of quality at least, if not better. For the first five years there is no cost to the Town, and in the final five years the maximum charge to the Town will be $100,000.

Quinn Leslie (l) and Destiny Stevens finished first in team roping at the Claresholm Junior Rodeo on Aug. 11. Destiny also finished first in goat tying.

Lecavalier included in top 27

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter After six days of hockey training camp in Canmore through the August long weekend, Strathmores Sarah Lecavalier is one of the 27 girls, cut down from 46, to continue on towards the potential Team Alberta U18 team. Lecavalier, 15, is one of the youngest members of the camp given special permission to try out for the age level above, rather than U16. All the older people were really nice. I got one as my roommate, said Lecavalier. She made sure I was in the group. It really made me feel like part of the team. Her roommate, Hannah Olenyk, had made the team previously, and assisted Sarah in not feeling intimidated on and off the ice. Skill-wise, I thought I was pretty close to them, Lecavalier said, noting that Karly Heffernan, recently featured on TSN, was at a similar strength to her own. I played her a couple times one-onone and I felt like I could handle her. Shes two years older. It kind of boosted my confidence a bit, the Strathmore forward said. Lecavalier injured her kidney during play back in May, but feels as if shes close to being one hundred per cent healthy. When I was at the camp, I had to push it a lot though, because its six days of just straight hockey, she said. So we would do fitness testing, and I could feel it hurting. The trainer made me sit out only one practice. The team would practice in the morning, break for lunch and then have another practice or game in the afternoon. We would always have team activities too, Lecavalier said, including yoga, handball, and walking to the rink in the morning to bond. The team will be whittled down to 23 during the U18 tournament to take place in Edmonton from September 27-29. Following that, 20 players will compete at the 2013 National Womens U18 Championships, from November 6-10 in Calgary. Sarahs very hopeful to make that final cut, and has a strong, positive attitude. I found it challenging, its a really different game, she said. But I like it, I like the challenge.

Stevens kids place, but separately

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Hayze and Destiny Stevens both did Strathmore proud this past weekend but instead of team roping together, each competed in different rodeos: Hayze went to the Super Six Team Roping in Olds from August 10 to 11, while Destiny went to the August 11 Junior Rodeo in Claresholm. I did pretty good, said 14-year-old Hayze. He placed fourth in the eight incentive, winning $300 and a saddle pad, beside partner Mike Longeway. He just asked me to rope, so I said Ill rope with you, and that was our first time, he said. It was Stevens first rodeo in Olds, competing amongst over 1000 teams of all ages. There were a couple guys that were around 85, and then there were 10-year-olds, Hayze said.

Destiny, on the other hand, faced riders in her age group, and dominated. She had a really, really good weekend, her brother said, as Destiny finished second in barrels, and took home first in goat tying, and team roping with Quinn Leslie. I was just more competitive, Destiny said. It didnt really pay that much but I got prizes too. The pair are looking forward to coming back to together for the Strathmore Super Series Youth Rodeo on August 17 and 18. Last year, a total of $7147 was paid out in prize money, with an average winning of $86 for riders. Hayze previously placed in all his events the first day, and won breakaway, but didnt do so well on the second. He has high hopes for this year. You feel at home, you know the place, youve been there. Its more relaxed, he said. Its more comfortable, Destiny added.

Gleichen grows every year

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Gleichen Rodeo will be returning on August 23 and 24, in its 10th consecutive year. Anyone that is not carded professionally amateur and semi-pro riders will be able to enter this week. A couple hundred participants are expected to compete. Its just an old time rodeo, said Head Coordinator, Jeff Yule. Therell be lots of entries. Its been growing every year. Though there used to be a Gleichen Stampede in the 1920s, the rodeo has been running, on and off, since the 1980s. More and more help is needed each time around this year an expected 40 volunteers will be needed to run the food, the entertainment in the beer gardens and the small midway. Theres a group of us that put it on, and we all work really good together. There isnt really anybody thats the boss, Im kind of the one right now thats in charge, said Yule, in his second year of taking the reigns. Its everybody, right? Everybody does their jobs. Local Gleichen stars include barrel racers Jayden and Rylee Wilson, and bull rider Jason Wilson. The sisters are not related to Jason, whose father owns the rodeo grounds where the event will run just outside of Gleichen. Hes kind of a local talent, said Yule of the 16-year-old Jason Wilson. He started fighting bulls and hes pretty good. The rodeo sevents will begin at 5 p.m. on both nights, with the beer gardens opening an hour before. Saturday morning, a breakfast will be served, followed by the parade at 9:30 a.m. The rodeo is $10 for adults, $5 for youth, and under 12 are free. Free camping and a fall fair at the Gleichen Ag Society will be offered as well.

to British Columbia in the final on Sunday, 13-3. We had two days of training and three days of games, Hall said. It was very fun, and I learned a lot. A lot of new skills with my pitching and batting. Alberta struggled against British Columbia the entire weekend, losing to them as well on Friday night. Saturday against Manitoba and the Okanagan Halos, the girls pulled off wins, earning them second place in the round robin. In the second inning of the

final, Albertas pitcher was struck by a line drive; Hall said this was the point of her teams downfall. It was a tie game after the first, and then they kind of pulled ahead, she said. Now with the season done, the second basewoman focuses her time on hockey, volleyball, basketball, dance and 4-H, until next spring. I just thought it was really cool to meet other girls who had the same amount of passion for sport as I did, she said.

The Strathmore Thunder U18 Fastpitch ladies traveled to Richmond, British Columbia for the Western Canadian Championship from August 8-11; finishing 2-4 in round robin, the Thunder placed fifth in Western Canada. All teams and games were fairly even, outside of Manitoba who were no doubt the top team there, said Strathmore Head Coach Lanky Johnson. His team needed just one more win to be able to move into the final four playoff round. Each game did come down to which team got the key, big play to ignite the team, he said. Unfortunately in a couple games we did not get the timely play or break when needed. Their first game, on Thursday, was a loss to South Delta 10-4. Both teams had nine hits, but Strathmore could not manage to bring them to home plate. Morgan Ackerman of the Thunder had two RBI that game, and Alyssa Lavallee contributed the same to the Thunders next game later that day against the Earl Grey Heat. It was

a close matchup in the first few innings, but the Thunder lost their hitting power near the end, and lost 10-6. Friday showed promise to be a new start for Strathmore; they won their first matchup 7-6 over Cordova Bay with a late game double in the last inning. Again, Lavallee had two RBI, while Kirstyn Johnson had four strikeouts, and pitched all seven innings. Four hours later, the Thunder were mercied by Kindersley, Saskatchewan 13-6, and produced nine errors. In Strathmores last game Friday, Manitoba blanked them 12-0. Saturday, Nicole White led the team with three RBI for a close 8-7 victory over the Richmond Islanders. Strathmore took the lead early, and though it juggled back and forth, they held off the home team in the bottom of the seventh. Their final season record was 16-20-1. The girls did play hard throughout and really deserved a better record than what it was in the end, said Coach Johnson. They did make some exceptional plays that were very impressive to watch.
