This class will use the Book of Acts from the New Testament Bible. Acts tells the story of the Early Christian church, especially the apostles Simon Peter and Paul of Tarsus. The early chapters discuss Jesus' Resurrection, His Ascension, the Day of Pentecost, and the start of the apostles' ministry. The later chapters discuss Paul's conversion to Christianity, his ministry, and finally his arrest, imprisonment, and trip to Rome. A major theme of the book is the expansion of the Holy Spirit's work from the days after Jesus ascension into what is today Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
This class will focus on the Ten Commandments which are a set of biblical principles relating to ethics and worship, which play a fundamental role in Christianity, Islam and Judaism. They include instructions to worship only God and to keep the Sabbath, and prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft, dishonesty, and adultery. The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Christian Bible and Hebrew Torah, and are also referenced more generally in the Koran. Teacher Don is a retired MSU professor and long-time Friendship House MSU teacher.
