17 March 2012..A weekly bulletin for residents of Auroville..Number 439

House of Mothers Agenda

I had an interesting experience the day before yesterday. In a very concrete way, there was the consciousness that everything is the Lord and that everything is His will, His action, His consciousness and so forth; at the same time, the perception of the world as it is ("as it is," anyway ... as we feel it). And as there was no longer any notion of good and evil and all that, there was a sort of almost candid surprise, a very spontaneous surprise, not thought out, at reprobation, anger, disapproval, scorn for all the people who are called "bad," who do evil and have bad will. It seemed so strange that one could lose one's temper because of that! Then there arose a profound Pity - but a Pity that has nothing of the sense of superiority or inferiority, nothing like that - like a sort of sorrow that there can be people who are so small and so weak in that Immensity that they are COMPELLED to be nasty and malicious, to hate, to reject, to wish evil. The words diminish the experience very, very much. It was so ... a super-compassion, you know, full of a deep Love and Understanding: "How can one reproach them for being the way the Lord wants them to be?" Then, when it all settled down, several hours afterwards, I wrote something - I wrote it in French (even with the will that it should not be translated into English). And as a matter of fact it's untranslatable. Here is what I wrote: Ce monde est plein de misres pitoyables, mais les tres que je plains le plus sont ceux qui ne sont pas assez grands et assez forts pour tre bons.[[ A literal translation, using the words of Mother's own English translation which follows, would give: This world is full of pitiable miseries, but the beings I pity most are those who are not vast and strong enough to be good. ]] But then the word bon [good] no longer had that sense of opposition to "evil": it contained all the divine splendor. It was the radiance of divine Love. (silence) Any translation of the word bon [good] into English is very small and all the way down. I didn't want to put it into English. But today, all at once it came to me in English and I wrote it down: This world is full of pitiable miseries, but of all beings those I pity most are those who are so small and so weak that they are compelled to be nasty. It's seen from the opposite side, but there is as much in it as in the first. [] When I have an experience, I don't even try to formulate it - I never try: I live it as intensely as I can and keep it alive as long as I can. Then suddenly there's a kind of rivulet: a rivulet of words that come, and they come all together, then they arrange themselves - I have nothing to do with it all! I don't know whether it's listening or seeing: it's something in between. For a very long time, all my contacts with the invisible were visual contacts, but now there is sound too. So this is how it works: I simply have to be attentive, that is to say, not actively busy with something else. If I stay still, it comes: it's exactly like a rivulet, a tiny rivulet flowing out of a mountain; it's very clear and pure like pure water, very transparent, and very white and luminous at the same time. It comes (gesture as of pearls of water drop ping) and it arranges itself here, just above the head, in the form of words. It arranges itself, and someone, I don't know who (probably Sri Aurobindo! because it's someone with a poetic power), looks after the sound and the placement of the words, and puts them in the proper order. Finally, after a little while, it's complete. And then I write it down - it's very amusing. That's what happened with the English translation: I had said with authority, "It will not be translated." Then this morning, when I wasn't thinking of anything at all, it came all on its own. That is to say, to be precise, I was telling the fact to someone who knows English better than French, so I said it in English, and once it was said I noticed, "Well, well! Ah, that's it, that's right!" It was the experience that had expressed itself in English. But thank God, all this (gesture to the head) has nothing to do with it - quiet ... oh, so peaceful. (silence) There is almost a paroxysm of disorder and confusion in all the affairs of the earth (at the Ashram too - maybe even worse than elsewhere! No, not worse but just as bad!), and it seems to be reaching new heights: almost hour by hour I discover confusion ... confusion, disorder (before I would have called it mischief, but now ...). And what confusion! ... People who are convinced that they know how to deal with things (they know far better than the Lord, far better - the Lord is completely ignorant of the things of this world, but THEY know better), and then the blunders they commit! And when they've committed a blunder, after a while they realize it's a blunder, so to make it good they commit another blunder! Everything is like that here, absolutely everything, with all sorts of blunders. And once they have thoroughly bungled, piled up blunder upon blunder and landed themselves in a complete mess, they think of asking me! (laughing) They ask me, "What should we do?" So I answer, "It's about time!" But what's marvelous is that nothing stirs here (gesture to the head), nothing stirs. And the Lord smiles.

FAMC report
Dear residents, As you might well imagine a lot of the FAMC's time over the last 2 months has been dedicated to responding to Cyclone Thane. Numerous in-depth and long discussions were necessary, and several meetings with key Aurovilians directly involved in coordinating the many activities had to be arranged. FAMC is grateful for all the individuals who took an active role, including those working in the Auroville Cyclone Response Team, the team leaders and members of the various clearing and cleaning crews, including those wielding chainsaws (some for the first time!), the newly formed Auroville Wood Tendering Team, Housing Service volunteers to help address the hundreds of cyclone relief requests that came pouring in, and so many others that they're too numerous to name. The coordination and communication across all of Auroville has helped make this difficult and uniquely challenging time go much more smoothly. ~Amy, on behalf of the FAMC Funds and Assets Management Committee January & February 2012 Report Regular members: Mr. S. Loganathan (Secretary-in-charge, Auroville Foundation), Mr. Srinivasmurty (Finance & Administrative Officer, Auroville Foundation), Daniel (Working Committee), Dhanapal (Land Consolidation Committee), Satyakam (Housing Service), Min (L'avenir d'Auroville), Otto (Auroville Unity Fund), Priya (Farm Group), Sanjeev (Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Educational Research), Toby (Auroville Board of Services), and Ulli (Auroville Board of Commerce). TRUST & UNIT TOPICS FAMC was asked to consider forming a new unit VarunaAuroville so that a wind generator could be donated to the Auroville Foundation to supply electricity to Auroville. Creation of this unit was approved. The For All Pour Tous Trust has been dormant for some time. In response to the creation of Varuna Auroville, it was agreed to resuscitate the trust and change the trustees. Therefore, Vidya and Olivier Hetzel's resignations were confirmed. New trustees approved are: Ulli Blass, Carel and Arjun. FAMC may consider the addition of 2 more trustees. This is pending. The Auroville Council (AVC) requested the Auroville Board of Commerce (ABC) to review their mandate, so the ABC requested the FAMC to look into the matter. FAMC confirmed the last approved mandate was in 2007 and replied to the ABC to review the document, make recommendations based on the current work realities, and submit the revised mandate to the FAMC for consideration and approval. This is pending. Individuals working in Auroville International Programs (AIP) met with the FAMC to explore an improved exchange between Aurovilians and the educational institutions enjoying the benefits of conducting programs in Auroville, as well as how Auroville might benefit more in financial terms from these exchanges. This is an ongoing exploration. Hendrik, Aurospirul, requested to take responsibility for some of the former-Papyrus buildings in Fraternity. This was supported by the FAMC. ABC recommend executive change: ACUR Management under Auroville Service Trust - resignation of Mr. Claude Jouen and appointment of Ms. Annemarie Bakker as executive. The current executive is Ms. Donata. This was approved. Path under Kattida Kalai Trust, involved in architecture, planning, and allied activities would like to add the following activities under the unit: 1. Documentation, analysis & publication; 2. Indicator Development Programme; 3. Capacity Building and Training; 4. Incubator for higher education; 5. Collaborative Projects; 6. Educational Tours of Auroville to Students and others; 7. Design, publication & sale. FAMC requested an explanation of current and intended activities. Further consideration is pending.

ABC received a letter from the Office of the Secretary, Auroville Foundation, suggesting terms of office for unit executives. There was a long discussion that led to a proposal concerning the Unit / Trust agreement. It is thought that the Office Order could be discontinued if the Unit / Trust agreement is enhanced, and the Trust is empowered. The Auroville Foundation would need to provide a written endorsement of the Trust for legal standing, for example, at a bank. FAMC will ask ABC to update the Unit / Trust agreement and submit it to the FAMC for review. This is pending a response from the ABC. FINANCE TOPICS The Forest Group requested a revolving loan of Rs. 20 lakh. After FAMC received their proposal for wood collection, assessment, storage, and accounting, this request was approved. It will be necessary, after another month or so, to get a more realistic estimate of the fallen wood value so that other financial and accounting considerations can be more knowledgeably discussed and the appropriate action taken. Diksha & Saskia requested repatriation to return to France. Funds to meet their needs for the first few months, and to purchase plane tickets were provided to them. The new housing project, Sunship (to be located next to Citadyn behind Town Hall) requested 100% tax-exemption status for its donors. The FAMC advised the project holders to demonstrate how it is an experimental social research project, confirm how the housing assets will be allocated, and provide detailed financial information. FAMC awaits to hear from them. The Farm Group reported the allocation of the Rs. 1 crore Agriculture Fund. FAMC requested a copy of the Auroville Consulting proposal. This is pending. HOUSING TOPICS Uma requested a loan of Rs. 35 lakh for Rohini & Yuva, a youth housing project as proposed by she, and Buildaur. The FAMC approved the loan in principal and requested a bill of quantities (BOQ) for the housing project, clarification regarding all the financing, and confirmation that assets would be allocated in collaboration and coordination with the Housing Service. The FAMC awaits Uma & Buildaur's reply. Residents for the new Realization Southwest block expressed concern about the increase in costs between Rs. 1,65,000 to Rs. 3,4,000. The individuals appealed to both the Housing Service, and the FAMC, stating they are not able, or willing, to contribute more funds. FAMC is exploring with L'avenir the possibility of using infrastructure funds to alleviate the costs associated with the Realization housing project however, there is understandable concern that this has not been offered to other housing projects which also experienced cost increases for various reasons. The FAMC met with Satprem and Cristo, Auroville Earth Institute (AVEI) executives to discuss the situation. In parallel, AVEI is requesting a 'green light' for a new housing project, Green Casbah. The FAMC are seeking clarification on various factors of the Realization housing project before officially giving its support to the proposed Green Casbah project. This is an ongoing exploration. The proposed representatives of the recently created Housing Board were announced by the FAMC in the News & Notes on 18 February 2012. As of 29 February there had been no response. FAMC take the community silence as support and will confirm with the individuals. LAND TOPICS Protection of Service Farm came to the FAMC table. Priya of the Farm Group reported that the current stewards will take responsibility for a new fence however, a maintenance budget will need to be established as the farm's small income barely covers the basic expenses. FAMC approved installation of a barbed-wire fence and requested Land Resources Management to do the work. The Land Consolidation Committee three-year term will expire in April 2012. The Working Committee (WC) proposed Eric and Kali as replacements of previous WC representatives Fabienne and

Saravanan. FAMC proposed Paul Blanchflower and Dhanapal continue as the FAMC representatives. And L'avenir have proposed both Jacques and Gilles G. continue as well. This information is being handled by the Working Committee in communication with the Office of the Secretary, Auroville Foundation, and the Governing Board. Due to a land exchange adjacent to Djaima Community, the LCC requested funds to create a compound wall, to move some water-pipes, and high-tension electrical lines. The FAMC

approved funds for these requests however, they should erected a 'normal' fence which demarcates the boundary only, not a wall. OTHER TOPICS Toby and Satyakam are approved, regular FAMC members after completing their respective 3 month trial periods. The FAMC welcomes their participation and presence.

Decision making core-group for Entry Service

The Auroville Council herewith presents the names of the community members who have accepted to serve at the Entry Service as part of the decision making core-group: Ishita - Sharanga, Kripa - Sharanga, Luk - Shakti, Umberto Aurodam. Ane- Dana will continue to assist the team with office work and as representatives of new Entry Service. The current core group composed of Cecilia, Kalsang, Rakhee, Jocelyn, Saraswati, Grace, Buvana will go on with their work till the end of June 2012. The Council believes that the team constituted of current members Saraswati, Grace, Buvana and new members Ishita, Kripa, Luk, Umberto will be in full swing from July 2012 onwards and can count on our support. The new members Ishita, Kripa, Luk, Umberto are currently getting acquainted with the work by participating as observers to interviews and being briefed on the day-to-day work. We will also hold a 4 day workshop from March 13th onwards when they can concentrate on the mandate and decision making process, among many other topics...and do some team bonding. This team will count some extra members in the support group that may come in from time to time to assist the team as observers or translators. We could include Aurovilians who have volunteered such as Rosalba and Susmita and will continue to include others as Mauna and Marco. We also have a list of about 20 Aurovilians who are bound by confidentiality when called upon. The term of each member is preferably a 3 year term. It so happened that the original team started in 2009 almost at the same time, except for Rakhee and Buvana who joined a few months later, because the previous team had collapsed. We believe in continuity of the work in this service for the community and lapses should be avoided if possible.

Filming about Auroville needs permission

Dear Aurovilians, By now you may be aware that any filming within and about Auroville requires permission from the Government of India /Auroville Foundation. Our service intermediates in this. So please inform people inquiring about this to get in touch with OutreachMedia, and we will help with obtaining this permission. See below an extract from the letter issued by Auroville Foundation and circulated to various agencies already in March 2010:

This is to inform all concerned about the procedure (refer to http://www.auroville.org/journal&media/outreachmedia.htm) for all media requests for filming in the Auroville International Township, Vanur Taluk, Villupuram District, Tamilnadu. These requests are to be channelled through Auroville OutreachMedia, which screens requests on behalf of Office of the Secretary, Auroville Foundation and facilitates the authorisation from the same. Please note that media requests for filming are required to be sent well in advance (minimum of 12 weeks) before the applied date of filming. Applications to be sent to: Auroville OutreachMedia, Multi-Media Centre, Town Hall Complex, Auroville 605101 Tamil Nadu outreachmedia@auroville.org.in http://www.auroville.org/journal&media/outreachmedia.htm We request you to kindly follow the procedure as above, which was the endorsed by the Secretary, Auroville Foundation, and cooperate.

Reason why we remind you of this is that, unfortunately, some residents seem to sometimes understand that such a permission is not required if they themselves facilitate/participate/associate in such filming, or if the shooting is done by Indian filmmakers. Please note that this is an illusion and that there is no such exception. We do everything to play the game properly and fairly, and count on your collaboration. Thank you very much! OutreachMedia team (Ann, Fabienne, Mauna, Natacha, Tim, Vinodhini).

Labour shortage in Solar Kitchen

Since several months we are experiencing an ongoing labour shortage. Hence we are forced to adjust our menu accordingly. Until this situation changes, puris will no more be served on Mondays.

this beautiful but very demanding experience or just interested in helping organising it, please contact Marie Claire marieclairebarsotti@hotmail.fr or Claude Jouen (aurotraductions) france@auroville.org.in An introductory meeting to have more detail about it will be held in Grace (Marie-claire's apartment) on Monday 19th, 5pm

No Solar Kitchen curd?

In N&N 437 of March 3rd 2012, there was a short note from Nandita: "Congratulations to Solar Kitchen for taking curds off the menu for however short the time. This is what not just Auroville needs but what India and the world need. Today the UN and European Union are calling for a shift to a vegan diet to save the planet...." Can we all decide voluntarily to become vegan or not please? Even in AV schools curd is missing on many days: the Mother arranged even non-vegetarian food for teenagers of the Ashram school: do we know better? Those here that choose to go vegan take vitamin B complex injections every few months: is the solar kitchen going to do the same for the rest of us? In 2011 we had curd on most days: not being able to find enough biological milk now is not enough of an excuse to experiment with everyones health. Just mix with other local milk till AV farms manage to supply. Anton

Marc Vellas Caravan of Love in February 2013

www.marcvella.com After Marc Vella's heart opening visit in January, Marc and a group of Aurovilians felt inspired to organize a "caravan of love" in South India in February 2013. Around 20 Aurovilians could come along with approximately 30 people from France to share with Marc and his piano this South Indian Tour. The tour starts in Auroville, goes until Kerala and back. The purpose of the tour is to meet people with love and joy and to have an exchange of the richness in our heart and culture. A group of Aurovilians could join this experience at self cost price, providing a commitment in the organisation of the work: Fund raising, itinerary, contacting the local press, or local artists, logistics for food and lodging, budgeting etc... A lot of work has to be done to prepare this trip. If you are interested in

Young leghorn cocks looking for homes

We have several 11-week old leghorn cocks, which were brought to us for rescue as day-old hatchlings. By a quirk of fate most of the chicks turned out to be males... The cockerels are tame, beautiful, and very healthy, and would ideally be placed individually with existing hens. Alternatively, it is also possible to keep cocks together as a male-only family. We are moving home and cannot take them with us to our next place - but wish to save them from ending up in cooking pots!! - One cock has already found a home in Auroville, and we hope the others will be as lucky! Please call Jasmin at 97877 97814.

Haelan fermented soy preparation for nutritional therapy in cancer

We have a supply of Haelan, a nutritional supplement highly recommended in treatment of cancer. This fermented soy drink is used to provide the body with deep nutrition, especially important when undergoing invasive treatments (such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery); Haelan has also been used by itself to reverse cancer, with many reports of surprising success. We purchased Haelan (from the USA) in sufficient quantity for several weeks' treatment, for a family member who unfortunately could never use it as it reached her too late. We would therefore be very happy if this (normally expensive) therapeutic supplement can be of benefit to somebody else who needs it. For detailed info about Haelan, here are some links: http://www.haelanproducts.com ; http://www.healingcancernaturally.com/haelan-fermentedsoysupplement.html - or simply google it.

Many thanks to the supporters of the Tantidhatri Festival!

Tantidhatri International Women's Performing Arts Festival was successfully held in Auroville and Pondicherry, March 11-15th. It was an initiative of Parvathy Baul and brought volunteer Ashramites and Aurovilians together to collaborate in order to support and participate in the performances by women artists from all over the world. It became a wonderful moment for all of us. We would like to thank all the supporters who made this festival possible. The Tantidhatri Team in Auroville

A P P E A L S Auroville library needs your help

Dear Friends, As you must have seen we have now quite a nice new Library. It is a vast improvement from the sad round hole in the Bharat Nivas which had also the dubious distinction of turning into a swimming pool nearly every monsoon. Thanks to the support of SAIIER which has been the channel for the Government funds, we managed to get immediately the bulk of the equipment needed, particularly these nice white metal shelves whose availability made the transfer almost 30.000 books relatively easier. We also got furniture and computer/UPS equipment needed to run the Library. Our present problem is that summer is fast coming and we need to protect visitors as well as custodians of the Library from excessive sun and heat. Therefore fans have to be bought and installed as well as some screens on the road-side windows to filter the sun to protect books as well as visitors and readers. This is the most urgent need. Further, there is a necessity of some minimum landscaping work and path tiling to prepare for the raining seasons and avoid muddy surroundings. We are planning to do the strict minimum at this point but we do need some funds to be ready in time.We have taken a loan for fans and screens as we decided that it was imperative to have them and that it could not be postponed much further. The estimated costs of both items are Rs 65,000. For the landscaping/tiling at least Rs 60.000 are needed. So our total request for now is Rs 1, 25,000 (one lakh twenty five thousand). As the amount needed is not so high, we invite everyone to contribute even a small amount. We are confident that we can raise it with your support. The Financial service account number is 0306 We thank you in advance for the support we do hope to get from you all. The library team home in Kailash Youth Community since July 2008. The number of Aurovilians, volunteers and guests who are using our services is now more than 2000 and growing. Our team has also increased to 15 healthcare providers and 2 support members. However, we are facing severe space limitations as we have only three small rooms of approximately 50 sqms. at Kailash. Furthermore, we have overstayed our agreement with Kailash by more than two years and the space is needed to accommodate other projects or activities. Work on our permanent healthcare facility, which is opposite Surrender, started with the laying of our foundation stone on Mothers birthday, 21st February 2011. Since then the skeleton of phase one has been built but we are lacking funds to proceed further with construction. At present we need 60 Lakhs to complete construction and another 40 Lakhs for furnishing and equipment. We appeal to you, the community of Auroville, to donate and contribute towards improving your Integrative healthcare clinic. Our PT a/c No. 251938. We are urgently looking for approximately 100 sqms. temporary space for the clinic ideally 5 rooms, till the new building is ready in June 2013. Please contact us with any suggestions at ihs@auroville.org.in With thanks and gratitude for your continuing support and appreciation, Your Kailash Clinic Team / Auroville Institute for Integral Health, (Alexey, Amarnath, Archana, Auradha, Heidi (Fertile), Jocelyn B., Igor, Leo, Linda Grace, Michael Z., Moghan, Nisha, Ruslan, Sumeet, Thilagam, Veronica and Vladimir)

The Kabir Festival will be on 6, 7, 8 April. To communicate through music, the Universal Language of Divine Love. News & Notes 17 March 2012 [439]

Kabir festivals fill not just the senses with beautiful music, they are balm for the soul. Those who have already performed in Auroville are: Prahlad Singh Tipanya (Prahladji), Padma Shri, and family from Madhya Pradesh, who by now needs no introduction in Auroville! He combines singing in the Malwi folk style and with explanations of the deep meaning of the Kabir songs/couplets/Mukhtiar Ali, a Sufi singer from the Mirasi community of Thar, Rajasthan. He represents the 26th generation of this humble community who have successfully kept alive the oral tradition of Sufiana Qalam/ Parvathy Baul, who again needs no introduction. This time she will be coming with 3 singers/ Shabnam Virmani, the founder and Director of the Kabir Project. A filmmaker and artist who has transformed into an excellent Kabir singer herself. Concerts, exhibitions, satsangs, film showings will take place. Events will be held at Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, SAWCHU,

Kalabhumi, Cripa, Udavi School, and Cinema Paradiso. It will be an extraordinary experience. Many volunteers are needed for many tasks. We invite people to come forward and take responsibility for different aspects. In particular, right now, we specially invite volunteers who speak Gujarati and Hindi to accompany these artists and take care of them during their visit to Auroville. To spend time with these artists, show them Auroville, and interact with them. Just being in their presence will be great fun and an uplifting opportunity! To volunteer, please send an email with your contact info to and contact Mark "aurovilleperformingarts@gmail.com" Barandard (9442006807), Anne Christine (9488084684), Moghan (9751110486), Mita/Language Lab (9443631861). More than 3/4th of the budget needed to organize this enormous festival has been raised already. But more is needed. Please donate into APA Account No. 252041.

The short term goals include setting up the test bed and start using it for research in Human Unity, Green Mobile Communications, Education, Eco Friendly living and Development projects. It is suggested that the research teams be formed with Aurovilians, external experts in the domains as well as academic researchers and volunteers / interns. The project is likely to start towards the end of 2012 and IRIS is initially expected to run for 2 years. As it is now a research project (instead of an infrastructure project) we can seek funding to support the research teams as well as Technical Maintenance teams. In order to prepare the project proposal, we need the names and profiles of Aurovilians and New Comers interested to participate in IRIS. The researchers need not be IT professionals. All Aurovilians/ New Comers working (or interested to work) in the areas of Human Unity, Green Mobile Communications, Education, Eco Friendly living and Development projects could apply. Around 8 am The Aikido class is over, I have invited the visitors and volunteers that joined the class that morning to register their name with Pitangas management, as a contribution is requested from them for the upkeep of the building (the classes are free). Since a couple of months 2 students, a married couple, have joined the class. One is known to us as he joined our classes when he arrived in Auroville over 10 years ago then stopped after a short while. The Pitanga in-charge then barges in the room and asks these 2 people to, after many reminders, settle their dues. It is then that I learn that these persons are not registered on the Master List. Around 5 pm After work I am bound for the movie at Cinma Paradiso. I arrive 20 minutes before time to secure a seat for my friend who will arrive a bit later than me. The room is full. One person has reserved 4 seats for herself and some of her friends. I know this person professionally, as she has purchased land in the Green Belt and is at present building a series of villas that have not received Non Objection Certificate from LAvenir. (Incidentally, one of these houses is built by someone who has been refused entry in Auroville. This person now shares his life with an Aurovilian.) There are a lot of things I could say about these two encounters. First, I could start to explain why I take the time to write about these stories. But, I had rather read what YOU, the so-called residents of Auroville, have to say. It would be also very instructive to know how you would have dealt with both situations. Send me your feedback via email (cjm@auroville.org.in) or call me. A copy of this posting has been sent to the Auroville Council with the hope that the questions these incidents raise will be addressed meaningfully. Take care Auroville, -Cristo- (Revelation) News & Notes 17 March 2012 [439] 13

Light from Japan

Lux ex oriente (Lat.) Light from East Not only was Zen Buddhism born in Japan but Masanobu Fukuoka was too. Njal has a nice portrait of Sensei (teacher) Fukuoka-san in the exhibition No More Pesticides near Solar Kitchen. Banzai (10 thousand years) Fukuokas teaching about organic farming! Nature was so happy when this farmer, philosopher, writer and traveller appeared in the country of the Rising Sun. He was a great samurai (fighter) for the natural agriculture without chemical pesticides. What about his busido (codex of honesty)? You can read for example Fukuokas book The Natural Way of Farming. The Theory and Practice of Green Philosophy (Madras, 2011). He wrote on p.5: I found to my despair, that people were no longer truly human, and nature no longer truly natural, also on p. 27: Man is but an arrogant fool who vainly believes that he knows all of nature and can achieve anything he sets his mind to. Ways of Auroville and Fukuoka are very close. Njal has three Fukuokas books in the exhibition No More Pesticides. Besides them there is also Claude Alvares The Organic Farming Sourcebook (Goa, 2009) -- it includes an interview with Aurovilian Bernard Declerq (p. 116-117) and one other with Fukuoka (p. 105-111). Every Aurovilian can understand the thought of brilliant Japanese: science and intellect are big mistakes which have taken man away from nature. We are cutting trees and create instead the buildings for our comfort. Of course this activity isnt good for positive karma of mankind and for natural abundance of the Earth. My Lord, please forgive us! Some words of Sri Aurobindo and Masanobu Fukuoka are absolutely equal. We read in Thoughts and Aphorisms N383: Machinery is necessary to modern humanity because of our incurable barbarism. Fukuoka has written in The Road Back to Nature. Regaining the Paradise Lost (Chennai, 2010, p. 56): Machine culture is doomed. Long live nature, not machines! Goplal Reni Singh (Shambala)

The Anonymous Goodwill Conspiracy Goes On

Dear Friends and Others (!) This is just a short note to inform you that the giving channel called the Anonymous Goodwill Conspiracy is working for those who feel the need to give quietly and anonymously. For those of you who wish to do so, but have lost sight of this channel, here is how it works. There is an account called 'The Anonymous Goodwill Conspiracy' to which you can transfer money with the name of the person or project it is intended for. The money will be forwarded to the person and the source (you) will remain unknown, unthanked and unsung. The number of this account is 252090. The other option is cash in an envelope. If you prefer this option, you can reach me by phone at 2623101 and I will meet you to pick up the envelope. One of the volunteering 'Angels' only known to me will deliver this envelope to the subject of your goodwill! The third option, specifically for construction or house repair purposes is to put the money on the account, or give me an envelope and inform me of the purpose. The Housing Group has kindly agreed to accept the money and get the job done. Which, to my limited understanding is a relief from having to look for masons/carpenters, and supervise the work etc. In any case you, the donor can decide by which way you would like to help someone-and we will find a way. Every now and then someone is giving and someone is receiving. I would like to make clear that I do not decide who gives and who receives. Nor is there a vague sum of money for me to distribute to the needy of our community. Giving is the choice of all those who find themselves lucky enough to have the thought...and the means. With love, Submitted by Ange

A simple request
I have the good fortune to go early morning into the fragrant cool stillness and in the late afternoon as the day settles to feed a mother and 7 puppies. They are very near Deepanam School, easy access on good roads and are in a quiet, secure setting on Auroville land. The healthy puppies, born 21 Feb., need daily handling at this time so they can live well amongst humans. Who do you know who might like to share this momentary joy with me? The stray mother is sweet, hungry, and not aggressive. She will be spayed as soon as her milk dries, and surgeries for the puppies can be provided if we are able to catch them. Daily handling of puppies helps to make them not afraid of humans, makes them easier to catch for medical treatment, makes them better neighbours. There is a stage in the development of puppies when this is crucial for their, and our, best interests. That time is now. I am in touch with over-worked animal groups in AV who are providing resources and help, but TIME from a few people of any age is asked.... 30 minutes a day a few times a week for perhaps a month will go a long way toward creating welladjusted dogs in our midst. This is a simple request for a few pairs of human hands for awhile and there will be no request for long-term commitment. Thanks. Aswapati and Sri Aurobindo in Savitri

A talk by Georges Van Vrekhem on Saturday 17 March at 5pm at Savitri Bhavan
Half of Sri Aurobindos epic poem Savitri is about the Yoga, the exploration of the supernatural worlds, and the supreme meeting with the Divine Mother of a Being commonly supposed to be Aswapati, the royal father of Savitri in the Mahabharata legend. The fact is that Sri Aurobindo mentions the name Aswapati for the very first time on page 341. For this he must have had good reasons.

Sat. morning, 10am, 24th March at Unity Pavilion A Round-table discussion with Prof. Makarand Paranjape
Transhumanism: Perspectives from Science and Spirituality News & Notes 17 March 2012 [439] 15

University of Human Unity Seminar

While numerous critiques of humanism emanating from the Humanities and Social Sciences, including the work of Jaques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Bruno Latour, and so on, might be classed under the general rubric of posthumanism, transhumanism arises out of a different discursive tradition, that of scientific progressivism. It is predicated upon the faith in the capacity of science and technology to transform the human condition so that it ceases to resemble itself. Ageing, disease, even death are no longer seen as intractable; instead, advances in biomedicine and cybernetics are supposed to render these signs of mortality obsolete, besides enhancing human capacities to unimaginable heights. One of the questions, thus, is whether transhumanism which promises to produce super-humans will actually end up creating monsters. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, advocate integral yoga, while the former do not stop short of recommending that human beings turn themselves into chip and circuit enhanced cyborgs.

Lecture/Discussion and Workshop on Salutogenesis How can we become greater swimmers in the river of life?
This question is the metaphoric focus on the concept of Salutogenesis (Development of Health). Salutogenesis works by considering how to create, enhance and improve physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing and provides a framework for researchers and practitioners to help individuals, organizations, and society move toward better health. The Auroville Health Services invites anyone interested, to an afternoon discussion and presentation about the Concept of Salutogenesis founded by the scientist A. Antonovsky.

On: Tuesday the 27th March from 6.30 to 7.30 pm In: Aurelec Canteen
The idea is to create afterwards an applied science group on the practical questions of: How can we continuously improve conditions for empowering out health potential and health resources? How do we create our lives to empowering our physical, intellectual, environmental, social, emotional and spiritual health? The main issue is how is it possible to put the concept of Salutogenesis into practice? Lets come together in the research city Auroville and use the Andragogic approach and share our knowledge on the way to a greater health. The proposal is to meet every Tuesday from 3-5pm in April (3-27 April) to discuss and enjoy healthy communication! (Registration after the presentation on 27th March). PS: The Concept of Salutogenesis and Salutogenetic Communication is helpful knowledge and a tool for work in therapeutics, care-giving, coaching or pedagogic discipline. There is no special health experience or knowledge necessary for participating! For more information and details contact: AV Health Services (ask for Mirjam). Phone 262-2425, Mo-Fr mornings.

Workshop: Stop smoking in 4 hours!

The biggest challenge for a smoker is not the nicotine itself, but the synapses and the self-image that was stored in the subconscious. Smoking habits are firmly attached within the synapses. Hence, one cannot modify them just by using willpower alone. What is unique about the never-again-smoking method, that it represents a combination of different therapies in one session. Amongst those one finds elements of hypnosis, NLP, acupressure, trance coaching and many other methods involved. Through these it becomes a lot easier to change a smokers habits and his own self-image into a happy life-long non-smoker. The subconscious cooperates 100% - the person will never start smoking again! It is insufficient just to quit smoking. The most important fact is to become and subsequently stay a non-smoker.

FRIDAY 23 MARCH 7.30 PM (Film show starting at 7.45 sharp) BAARA (THE PORTER)
Written & directed by Soulayman CISSE, Africa, Mali, 1978 With: Balla Moussa Keita, Ismaila Sarr, Omou Diarra, Bubukar Keita, Baba Niare Synopsis: The first feature film ever produced in Mali, Baara (The Porter) is about a young man caught in the growing political and economic tensions of urban Africa. Balla Diarra is a worker in the capital city of Bamako who struggles to survive on his meager income. Set in a modern city rather than a mythical past or traditional village, Baara offers a portrait of African life not often seen on the screen. By the director of Yeelen a coming-ofage film which won the Jury Prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. Baara received the Yenenga's Stallion prize at Fespaco* in 1979. The Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) is an important biannual African film festival. The "talon de Yennenga" is awarded to the African film that best shows "Africa's realities". Western viewers who know Ciss only through his more famous and available Yeelen will be surprised by the films straightforward narrative, contemporary setting, and realistic approach. However, despite these differences, we can see many of Cisss ongoing themes (the inter-generational struggle, the critique of masculine authority and dominance, the critique of self-serving individualism) and stylistic techniques, notably his shifting point-of-view and his willingness to disrupt the narrative to isolate the individual image, generally close-ups of characters faces--giving us pause to contemplate these people, who they are and what they represent, allowing us time to connect with them. It is his aesthetic technique that allows Ciss both to give us a

Femme Series Monday 19 March 8.00 pm: GEORGIA OKEEFFE USA, 2009, Dir. Bob Balaban w/ Joan Allen, Jeremy Irons, and others, Biography-Drama- Romance, 90mins, English w/ English subtitles, Rated: NR Alfred Steiglitz, the celebrated photographer and art impresario is shocked to learn that the extraordinary drawings that he had discovered were by a woman, Georgia OKeeffe. Eventually Alfred manages to convince Georgia to allow him to become her benefactor. Their relationship evolves and Alfred leaves his wife for Georgia. However, he is threatened as his ward, the rising star is poised to eclipse his light. Despite her fame and talent Georgia struggles through the complicated relationship and heart aches in search of solace. Finally, she finds new inspiration and ultimately her own voice in the New Mexico landscape. Femme Series Tuesday 20 March, 8:00 pm: IRON JAWED ANGEL USA, 2004, Dir. Katja von Garnier w/ Hilary Swank, Margo Martindale and Anjelica Huston, Drama-History-Romance, 125mins, English w/ English subtitles, Rated: NR (for all) This outstanding film tells the story of Alice Paul and the women of the 1918 Womens Suffrage movement as they fight for future generations right to vote and run for office. Sacrificing their health, marriages and the limited amount of freedom they had, women were imprisoned and force-fed after picketing and hunger-striking against war-time president, Woodrow Wilson; but survived to see the results of their efforts. The movement did not stand alone. They drew inspirations from similar womens movement across the world and in turn inspired many others. If you have not watched this film yet it is a must watch and if you have seen it before, it is an opportunity to see it again! Femme Series Wednesday 21 March, 8:00 pm: GULABI GANG (Pink Saris) UK, 2010, Dir. Kim Longinotto w/ Renu Devi, Sampat Pal Devi and Niranjan Pal, Documentary-Drama, 96mins, Hindi w/ English subtitles, Rated: NR Like many illiterate, low-caste woman Sampat Pal too was married off at 12 and was bullied since then at her in-laws. In an act of inspired desperation in 2008 Sampat set up the gulabi (= pink) gang where women dressed in bright pink saris gather to challenge any problem be it violent husband or corrupt policeman. Ignoring patriarchy, custom, or religion Sampat fights the good fight on behalf of the wronged and frequently very young women of Uttar Pradesh. As the film makes it clear that while Sampat is no saint, she's struggling against enormous odds to build a more just and more equitable society in her homeland. PANAROMA OF FRENCH CINEMA @ Cin-Club Cin-Club - Sunday 25 March, 8:00pm PIERROT DE FOU (Pierrot Goes Wild) France, 1965, Dir. Jean-Luc Godard w/ Jean-Paul Belmondo , Anna Karina and others, 90 mins, Drama-Crime-Comedy, French w/English Subtitles, Rated: PG This film is sometimes seen as an early and paradigmatic example of postmodernism in film.
