future tense: be going to vs. will

The future tense refers to a specific time in the future and has two different forms: will and be going to. Although the two forms can sometimes be used interchangeably, they often express two very different meanings. Since weve already learned how to structure both of these future tenses using will and be going to, its time to learn when to use each form. use will With voluntary actions We often use the will form to suggest that the speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one where the speaker offers to do something for someone else. For example, we use will to respond to someones request for help. On the contrary, we use will not or wont when we refuse to voluntarily do something. Will you help me write this e-mail? (request) Sure, I will help you write it. (accept) No, sorry, I wont. (decline) To express a promise When promises are made in English, we usually use the will form. I will call you when I arrive. I promise I will not look inside the file. Dont worry, I wont download the virus. use going to To make a plan or to talk about scheduled activities When talking about future plans, use the be going to form. If the person intends to do something in the future, it is a plan. It doesnt matter if the plan is realistic or not. He is going to design a Web site. I am going to pay him for his work. Is he going to design your Web site? We are going to meet on Monday to discuss the design.

use either going to or will

To express a prediction When talking about predictions in the future, you can use either the simple future will + verb or future continuous be going to + verb form. I think tomorrow is going to be fun. I think tomorrow will be fun. This Web site is going to bring lots of traffic in two months. This Web site will bring lots of traffic in two months.
