Profile :

Biography of Philip I. Trilles

After several weeks the hosts were no longer interested in continuing having meetings in their house. Members of my family were in attendance regularly. Then the leader of the group asked Father if they could hold the meetings in our house, and he consented. They were surprised to know that we had a Bible. The Great Controversy, and Christs Object Lessons in our house. At this time they knew that my family was riped for conversion. Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. (Eccl. 11:1 NKJV). The seeds of truth had been planted years before by two colporteurs whose names have long been forgotten. My family joined a group they called fellow believers, calling one another brothers and sisters. They were very united. It was during the great Depression
that I was born in September 1, 1933, the youngest of four children of Anselmo Trilles and Feliciana Ignacio of barrio Palloc, Ballesteros, Cagayan. I spent my boyhood days in this small community where the residents were mostly my relatives. The main street Calle Trilles was named after my grandfather, Juan Trilles. In March 1945 I was baptized by Rafael Pilar, the district pastor/evangelist in the area. I graduated as valedictorian in the elementary. I went to high school at the Northern Cagayan Academy, one of the two private high schools in our town. Because of my scholastic record in the elementary I was given full scholarship, free tuition including all other fees. During my senior year, I was selected to represent my school in the oratorical contest which was held in another town. The contest was scheduled on a Saturday night but when we reached the place I was told there had been changed in the schedule. The contest had been moved on a Friday night. Instead of attending vespers, I joined the contest, eager to win a medal. I stammered twice in the middle of my speech. I went home defeated talking to God along the way. This made me focus more on my studies. I finished the course in three years graduating in 1951 as salutatorian. Young, ambitious and full of confidence , I got ready for college. I decided to go to Philippine Union College. I enrolled for the two-year premed course. I went to the business office and applied for work and was told that the only available job was janitorial. I was introduced to Jeremias Ocampo, the head janitor/supervisor, a senior in college. I had to get up very early in the morning, clean a few classrooms, rush to the dorm and get ready for breakfast. Subjects such as Chemistry and Zoology included laboratory classes making my daily schedule very hectic. At the end of my second year, having fulfilled all the academic requirements for medical school, I joined five others who took the two-year pre-medical course and applied at the Manila Central University College of Medicine. They were Loida Castillo, Emilio Figueroa, Conrado Miranda IV, Romeo del Rosario, and Erasto Sarno. We asked President R. G. Manalaysay of PUC for letters of recommendation to the dean of the College of medicine. This was the year 1953 -1954. I finished the first year medical course successfully. During my first year in PUC my father was falsely accused of arson and homicide through reckless imprudence. Father lost the criminal case and the civil case for damages as well. I had to drop out of medical school. After a year, my parents told me I could go back to school. Faith is a powerful factor, which gave me hope, sense of purpose and resolution. It was a matter of great solace and strength. I went back to PUC in June 1955 and enrolled at the School of Medical Technology. I spent one semester in Baesa and during the rest of the course at the Manila Sanitarium and Hospital. It was a rigorous lecture and practical work in the laboratory for fifteen months including affiliation at the Public Health Department . I graduated in the Spring of 1957 with the Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, the only one that year and the sixth graduate of the school. It was the time of US fever in the Philippines. If you were in the medical field whether a nurse, medical doctor , laboratory technologist, or X-ray etch, you could contact a hospital in the US, send them your resume and most certainly you would receive a letter of acceptance offering a stipend with free board and room. You had to have a passport, visa, and a passenger ticket and you could leave the country. One of the first to take advantage of the opportunity was my fiance, Celerina (Cely) Guadiz , a graduate nurse of the MSH school of nursing. She left for the US in June 1958 traveling with Dr. and Mrs. Robert Rosenquist and family who were returning to the US after a year at MSH. She signed in at the Glendale Sanitarium & Hospital ( now Glendale Adventist Medical Center) in Glendale. I was left behind but not for long. On my 25th birthday September 1,

1958 I said good to my dear parents and to the rest of my family and flew to California. In September 9, barely a week after I arrived in L.A., I married Cely Guadiz , Pastor Ambrocio Alcaraz officiated our wedding in Los Angeles. This important event in our lives was made possible by the help of family friends Dr. and Mrs. Ulysses Carbajal who helped do the arrangements. The ceremony and simple reception was attended by the members of the Filipino church at that time located in Compton, South Los Angeles. We came to the US as exchange students. This was a provision of the US department of State to attract students from foreign countries to come to the US for work up to four years. Our time was up for us to leave the country. The uncertainty of being able to find employment in the Philippines at that time made us look for some alternative to fulfill the two-year outside the country requirement. We wrote North York Branson Hospital in Willowdale, Ontario, Canada, the only hospital in the country run by the Adventist Church and got a favorable reply. We landed as immigrants when we arrived in Windsor, Ontario in May 20, 1962. The hospital laboratory at that time was not as equipped compared to those in the US. There were no inspecting agencies to monitor how the laboratory tests were run and performed. My wife was able to obtain her RN license by reciprocity. We stayed in this institution for two years. We experienced two long winters, yes, two real white Christmases. We could have stayed in Willowdale and made Canada our adopted country, but w echoes the US, and in July

1964 we returned to California where White Memorial Hospital was ready to rehire us. The Lord has been so good and had led us and provided for us all this time. We knew that our jobs were now quite secure. Two boys in the family growing up demanded a lot of time especially with their activities outside the school. The Filipino church had a well organized Pathfinder club. That was a good outlet for our boys extra energies. Joined the staff and started as counselor until eventually became club director. The club provided secular time activities in outdoor living, nature exploration and crafts. Always hungry for advanced learning, I enrolled at the California State University, Dominguez Hills for the Masters degree in Medical Technology, which I finished in eighteen months. Our church head elder at Central Filipino Church at this time was Eliseo Bautista, a general and cardiovascular surgeon. He and his wife had a yearly schedule of going on medical missions to the Philippines and my wife and I were invited to join them. For three years in a row, instead of spending our vacations in some resort, we joined this dedicated couple. We saw poor people relieved of their medical maladies which otherwise would not have been possible. We cherished the fond memories of these medical missions. There were brown outs during surgeries and we had to resort to flash lights and foot-operated aspirators, with no air conditioning. I retired at 63, generally considered an early retirement age. Shortly after leaving White Memorial I got a correspondence from a former supervisor who was serving as the laboratory manager of Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, a 110-

bed healthcare facility in Hong Kong. I went to Hong Kong as a retired laboratory consultant. My job was to write the procedure manuals of each department of the clinical laboratory and gave inservice presentations to the laboratory personnel. At the end of my term my wife joined me and we toured the Far East including Singapore, Bangkok, Macao, and several border cities of main land China. It was a rich and very rewarding experience serving the Lord in that part of His vineyard. Looking back, we have experienced Gods marvelous goodness. I have met obstacles in my life that seemed like brick walls but they proved to be just speed bumps along the way. With great difficulty and considerable pain, I have made detours to find new directions. I thank God for Christian parents who taught me early in life to talk to God and always trust Him. They instilled in me the virtue of honest labor. I thank God for dedicated Christian teachers from grade school to college who taught me lessons of eternal value. My wife passed away more than a year ago. We are blest with two sons. Ervin, a dentist and practicing in Glendora, CA, is married to Dawn McClintick, an ER nurse. They have three children: Alec, Melyssa and Tanner. David , our younger son, is a nurse. I want to thank the Alumni Archives for the privilege of sharing my mini life story . We are eagerly looking forward to our Lords glorious appearing and we are almost home. We want to be there with you. And our prayer is : Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Last June 25 - July 6, 2013 selected Cascadia members & special family guests from California joined the Vancouver Filipino SDA Church Pathfinder Club to sponsor a school mission outreach bonding our academy students from LIPA, AUPA, PCA, BAESA & CLAA with our church youth/pathfinders & together will form a stronger group to reach out to their respective community stations & share them the blessings from the Lord through acts of fellowship, teamwork, medical outreach, Bible Study, praise, worship & prayer. By God's grace we were able to serve about 4,000 people during our trip. We got lucky to visit the ICCP orphanage & our brethren in Boracay Church. These community friends are nonAdventists & it was a great blessing for us to be given that privilege. We 're happy to introduce to them Jesus thru' family counseling & prayer support. We distributed Bibles, Steps to Christ & other Adventist magazines. We did medical consults & surgical referrals supported by our SDA institutions, the AUP clinic & MAMC. We also gave away gift bags, school supplies & accessories such as camera, electronic keyboard & computer gadgets, first aid medicine, vitamin supplements, toiletries, stuffed toys, clothing, dry goods & rice products. We're happy to help the participating schools with their school projects like dorm mattresses, building new washrooms & renovating their science-lab rooms. Our team composed of the following fami-

It was a journey we'll not forget, our lives doubly blessed & touched by miracles in many different ways. None of us got seriously ill & we enjoyed the variety taste of the tropical fruits & local delicacies. We've seen lots of changes back there in the Philippines yet we've experienced & felt the guidance of the only One God, the One who has blessed us all. Our motivating Bible verse that kept us inspired is in Galatians 6:9 "And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't get discouraged & give up." (Children's Living Bible). It is a spiritual wish that our mission trip will encourage our youth to emulate our Lord's ministry on Earth & would consider sharing & giving as few expressions of our highest forms of worship to God who is the Ultimate Giver. May you find this inspiring to continue discipleship service for God.

Reflect and Connect

By Edwin Araba

When we are truly connected with Christ His character will be imbued upon us and we will reflect the manifestation of His glory .

It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones. - The Desire of Ages, p.83 (1898). This is truly a time for serious reflection when in retrospect we try to analyze our past mistakes and to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. As alumni, what is our mission and work at this time and on which side are we working with? There is no middle ground here its either we are on Christ side or the enemys side. In reviewing our past history, Ellen G. White wrote in Life Sketches, p.196 (1902). We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in the past history. We praise God for His providential leading and blessings upon us ; we can have full confidence in Him as leader. Our only safeguard against evil is our vital connection with God. Unless we become vitally connected with -indulgence, and temptation to sin. Without a personal acquaintance with Christ, and a continual communion, we are at the mercy of the enemy, and shall do bidding in the end. - The Desire of Ages, p.324 (1898). One night as a group of women met together they stumbled across the verse in Malachi 3:3 that declares that God will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver (NIV). They were curious about what God and the refiner of silver would have in common. After some discussion the women broke up for the evening, with one of them promising to find out more about the process of refining silver that week. The women made an go to silver workshop. As she watched the silversmith hold the silver in the hottest part of the flame, she asked why he was

doing it. It is because the heat of the flame takes away all impurities, the man explained. The hotter the flame the purer the metal is when it comes out. She noticed that he carefully held the silver in the exactly the right spot, and he didnt once take his eyes off it. The woman was still curious . But how do you know when the silver is ready to come out of flame??Oh, thats easy, the refiner replied. I know it is ready when I can see my reflection in it. Whenever I feel that I am in an unbearably hot spot, I take comfort in the fact that my me very refiner is holding carefully. Despite what it might feel like , I can be continues

sure that he wont ever leave me alone, not even for a second. And I can rejoice in the fact that if the suffering longer than I think necessary, it is because he has a goal for me. By the time I am ready to be taken out of the fire, He will be becomenothing is more thrilling than the thought that when all is said and done, I will be more like Jesus! Let us reflect more on the life of Christ and what he has done for us in our lives. Jan Paulsen , a former GC president, connected well with people and he also embodied a Christ-like character like a light into this world. Let the light of Christ shine on to the world ; we are mere reflection of His glory and let us be One, as oneness in Christ . Let your light so shine before men that they may see His goodness and glorify your father which is in heaven When we are will be imbued upon us and we will reflect the manifestation of His glory.

God, we can never resist the unhallowed effects of self-love, self able to see His reflection in me! I dont care how hard things may

The Power of ONE Thing

The While Cres Pimentel Award. Dr. received Benjamin LeaderArevaloboth The Perseverance theme of the First International PUC/ AUP Alumni convention was ONE: One God, One Alma Mater, One Family, One Goal. Speakers gave emphasis on this theme and encouraged alumni to be united and be one in many aspects of their Christian life and in their service to the university and to others. The convention was held in April 2-7, 2013 at the Adventist University of the Philippines campus and at the Taal Vista Hotel grand ballroom with the theme ONE and attended by alumni that came from all over the world was an outstanding success as attested by numerous attendees. The participants of the convention were alumni members of five major alumni associations namely Alumni of Western North America (AWESNA), Eastern North America Chapter (EASNAC) Alumni Association of Central North America (AACNA), AUP Alumni Association of UK North and National Alumni Association (NAA, Philippines). Pastor Ann Roda-Hernandez delivered a powerful sermon during the convention. Her sermon title was The Power of ONE Thing. She speaks about being ONE with God and to fully trust in Him, citing an example from the Biblical story of David against Goliath wherein David just used one stone in his sling and kept the rest of the stones into his pocket. It showed Davids confidence in God , his total trust in Him by relying with just one stone in his sling against all odds of a powerful boasting giant named Goliath. David knew that nobody was too big for his God, the God of Israel who protected him against ferocious animals in the field. The power of ONE stone relies not on himself nor his own strength but to the power of the mighty God . Ann Roda-Hernandez elaborates that, If it is not Gods vision we cannot surrender with that one stone. We cannot have the confidence in taking that one stone but David knew Gods vision for Israel. By taking that one stone on the line, everything is on the line with that one stone. How many stones do you have in your hands? Do you have three stones in your hands...just in case? With the power of the One theres no such thing as just in case. Either One stone or none at all. The power of the One... One people claiming the power of one God, moving in one accord - thats how God works. Whatever giants you have in your life, whatever the university faces, the solution is in the power of the One. The fight to win with one stone, means to surrender ourselves with the power of the will of God. She ends up with a question, Are you going to give it up with the power of One stone?

Mission on the Hilltop :

AWESNA-LLFC-MVCAA Joint Medical-Dental Outreach

By Eppie Manalo,PhD

A joint AWESNA-Loma Linda Filipino Church-Mountain View College Alumni Association medical-dental mission was held in March 27-29, 2013a prelude to the Mountain View Colleges (MVC) 60th anniversary. Located on a 2, 500-foot (760 m) plateau in Mt. Nebo, Valencia City, and situated between Kitanglad and Kalatungan mountain ranges, MVC is home and haven for more than 2,000 students and workers. As a Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning, the college has trained and sent committed and competent graduates locally and globally who have promoted the ideals of their alma materthe School of the Light. An ongoing program/ministry of both AWESNA and LLFC, this years outreach event was hosted and coordinated by the MVC Alumni Association. Forty PUC and MVC alumni and friends invested their time, talents, resources, and expertise to extend much-needed medical and dental services to the less privileged residents of barangays near the college. The team included: Drs. Angel and Esther Arafiles (AWESNA Community services coordinator), Drs. Eduardo and Alma Gonzaga, Dr. Elmer and Lorie Bangloy, Nestor and Jeanne Caballero, Drs. Ely and Gloria Rolle, Dr. Armand and Ruth Zabala, Cesar and Lydia Imperio, Salvador and Elizabeth Wong, Raffy and Lita Laoyan (Loma Linda AWESNA chapter president), Efren and Edna Domingo (AWESNA Awards committee chair), Jun and Delia Bantigue,Fely Dawson, Orly and Belen Palitang, Obed and Feline Camato, Pedrito and PeridaTongpo, Elmore and Lani Cocjin, Benny and Amy Abejar, Bernie and Yoly Begonia, Fely Dawson, Rosabel Ambat, Virgilio Malate, and Pastor Jose (AWESNA adviser)and Mrs. Eppie Manalo (Loma Linda chapter adviser). Medical-dental services for the first two days were held at the barangay centers of Lurugan and Lilingayon two well-populated barrios near MVC; and for the last day (Good Friday), the Michael Oliverio hall served as venue. Several volunteer doctors and dentists, including barangay heads and officials were actively involved

in the preparations and actual program. Despite the challenge posed by the summer heat and the Holy Week celebration, patients flocked to the centers, with hopeful expectations that their health problems will be addressed and the pain they were feeling from their illnesses would be alleviated through the skillful hands of the health team, who not only employed their talents and skills, but also prayed for and shared their faith and denominational literature with patients. Children were likewise treated to stuffed toys and school supplies given out after consultations. Good Friday celebration on the third day posed a big challenge as religious beliefs of non-SDAs mandated that there would be no inflicting of wounds or bleeding of any sort during this day. However, eager patients still dared the odds, some of them walking long distances to be at the college campus and be seen by the doctors. This was likewise ukayukay day for MVC working studentsa treat consisting of clothes and other goodies from about 8 balikbayan boxes from the team. A total of 1, 178 patients (599-medical and 579-dental) benefitted from the free clinics. Of the medical services extended, there were 226 circumcisions and one cyst incision. The team praises God for the blessings gained from this service experience: (1) the joy of serving and caring for patients through God-entrusted talents and means (2) interacting and learning with and from team members; (3) for most first-timers at MVC, this was a chance to personally see and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the school on the hill and see the institutions landmarksHydro I and II, MVCs rubber plantation, Manupali River, Sleepy Hollow, Malingon Falls; and taste the sumptuous meals served both in the

barrios visited and the college cafeteria, which of course, included a variety of fruits and almost a daily dose of the famous, whether you like it or notdurian! (4) visiting SDA hospitals: Valencia Sanitarium and Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital in Iligan; (5) taking a bonus trip to Maria Cristina Falls; (6) for MVC alumnithe opportunity to reminisce fond memories, including strolling and marching with former sweethearts and for some, the not-so-good experience of early vacations due to misbehavior or offenses;(7) the spirituallyenriching experience of participating in the opening services for the 60th anniversary of the collegeserving as speakers (Dr. Elmer Bangloy and Pastor Jose Manalo); leading out in the praise service (Dr. Elmer Bangloy, Orly Palitang, Jun Bantigue, Eppie Manalo, PeridaTongpo and Lorie Bangloypianist); sharing testimony as alumnaFelyne Camato; offering prayerLita Laoyan; sharing impressionsEdna Domingo; providing a synopsis of the lesson study Dr. Ed Gonzaga; and singing He Leadeth Me and Glory to His Name with the instant AWESNA-LLFC Choir that sang during the Vespers service and Hour of Worship (thanks to director, Orly Palitang and pianist, Bart Brondo). For some of the members, this was a first! AWESNA community services department led by Dr. Esther Arafiles and LLFC leadership through Pastor Jose L. Manalo, thank the MVC Alumni Association, the MVC administration for hosting this years mission trip; and the team members for their unselfish service, which not only testify to their commitment to and demonstration of the positive interaction between the health ministry and the Gospel Commission. Also, thanks to Loma Linda Filipino Church, Atty. and Mrs. Bill La Tour, Dr. and Mrs. Elmer Bangloy, and the team members for sharing their resources for this worthy cause. Indeed, there is joy when the work is done! But to the team this is not the end. Even before the end of the mission trip, most of the members were askingWhen and where is the next outreach? For the Bible provides the motivation to keep getting involved in Gods mission. chaplain , Major William Bergherm (former president of West Visayan Mission) invited Dr. Andrew Manalaysay joined him in this endeavor. When Nelson felt that 19 members of his class were ready for baptism he persuaded the War Trial officers to allow the converts to be baptized at PUC campus. The 19 candidates were loaded in a 6X6 army truck and escorted by armed soldiers in several vehicles. The convoy cut across Manila on its way to Baesa, Caloocan, Rizal. All radio stations broadcast the event. Tens of thousands of Filipinos lined the route. It was October, 1949. The wounds were still raw in

the hearts of millions of Filipinos. Among the many things mentioned in the radio broadcast that Saturday morning in October 29 were : (1) That these new converts to Christianity were either former Buddhists or Shintoists; (2) That the Bible studies were given by Dr. Andrew Nelson, a Christian missionary to Japan , a member of Gen. MacArthurs staff, and at the time, president of the Philippine Union College; and (3) That one of Nelsons associates was Prof. Reuben Manalaysay, a Fort Santiago veteran; and that one of the converts was the Japanese who tortured him almost unto death. All these news were good advertising for our Church, which at the time had only a little more than 20,00 members in the whole country; and to our PUC with a college enrollment of less than 300. I was junior ministerial student and was deacon of the PUC Church. I served/participated in this momentous baptism. Can you identify me in the picture? Footnotes: Famous Mango Tree. It was located about 100 yards from the East Gate of the PUC campus, and another 100 yards from the South Hall (Mens dormitory). The main trunk was about six feet in diameter; the circumference around its shade was about 500 feet. A guess-estimate of its age, about a thousand years. This tree had witnessed the coming in and the going out of a hundred thousand students.

O ur prophetess said that we have nothing to fear of the future

except as we forget how God has led us in our past history. I will share with you some significant denominational history related to Gods work in the Philippines during the Japanese-American War (1941-1945). General Yamashita was in charge of the Japanese forces in the Philippines (1944-1945) when Gen. MacArthur made good of his promise to the Filipino people - I SHAL RETURN . In February 23 , 1945 the 2,100 war prisoners at the Los Banos Concentration camp were rescued. Among them were American Adventist missionaries and their families. (In December, 1941, missionaries assigned to Manchuria, Japan, Malaysia, and Indo-China were gathered in Manila to take a ship home. They did not make it. War broke out between the U.S. and Japan in December 7, 1941). 1,500 Filipino civilians were massacred in the towns surrounding Los Banos by the Japanese in retaliation. This was one of the many massacres committed by the Japanese forces all over all over the country at the closing days of the War. Gen. Yamashita was hung in the same camp at Los banos a year later, February, 1946. His crime COMMAND RESPONSIBILITY. Several hundreds of Japanese soldiers, charged with brutal crimes were interned at Bilibid prison, the national prison. They were either awaiting trials or executions. An Adventist U.S. Army

FIPAAC A Huge Success!

By Emily Nimo Garcia
Opening Ceremony The opening ceremony on Friday evening took place at the Philippine International Church. It was colorful with alumni officers dressed in their Filipiniana attire carrying their flags and banners to the stage which was decorated with lavish flower arrangements. Cadets from the Philippine National Police Academy lined up the entrance to the PIC. The officers and delegates of the different alumni chapters around the world passed under the drawn sabers of the PNP cadets. AUP orchestra and the AUP Ambassadors who bagged the Choir of the World title in 2011, provided music during the processional of the alumni chapter officers. Lilibeth Casel, associate director of Alumni Relations and Philanthrophy, gave the welcome remarks followed by the remarks of the presidents of the five major alumni organizations and the university president. Canticlairs, Health Enablers, Young Voices and the Brown Brothers, USA also provided music during the program. The opening ceremony was followed by the Vespers service where Pastor Jose P. Orbe, Jr., president of the National Alumni Association, gave keynote address. From his parents to his children, everybody in his family attended PUC and/or AUP. Ann RodaHernandez, pastor of New Hope Adventist Church in Fulton, MD gave an inspiring message on The Power of One Thing. Sam Villanueva, executive director of EASNAC, showed a video presentation in tribute to the late Dr. Alfonso P. Roda, PUC president who envisioned the transfer of PUC from Baesa to Silang campus. Dr. Roda was one of the most loved PUC presidents by the students and alumni. Sabbath Programs The Sabbath and Sunday meetings were held at Taal Vista Hotel grand ballroom.

The First International PUC/AUP Alumni Convention (FIPAAC) held in April 2-7, 2013 at the Adventist University of the Philippines campus and at the Taal Vista Hotel grand ballroom with the theme ONE and attended by alumni that came from all over the world was an outstanding success as attested by numerous attendees. The
participants of the convention were alumni members of five major alumni associations namely Alumni of Western North America (AWESNA), Eastern North America Chapter (EASNAC) Alumni Association of Central North America (AACNA), AUP Alumni Association of UK North and National Alumni Association (NAA, Philippines). Theme The convention theme was ONE: One God, One Alma Mater, One Family, One Goal. Speakers of the convention gave emphasis on this theme and encouraged alumni to be united and be one in many aspects of their Christian life and in their service to the university and to others. Weekday Activities Activities for the six-day alumni homecoming started on April 2, 2013 with a bus tour to the old Baesa campus, now Eternal Gardens Memorial Park. It was a nostalgic tour to the former campus where many of the alumni spent their college years and where the old mango tree was a silent witness to many people that came in and out of the college and a meeting place for many students before before they went to their off campus activities or wait for their friends to go to their classes or the Cafeteria. From Baesa , the alumni headed to Adventist Medical Center (former Manila Sanitarium then Manila Adventist Medical Center) where they had lunch. From AMC, the group of alumni were taken to the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS) and the Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD) of the General Conference. A guided tour of AUP campus was held for those who wanted to see the new developments on the campus since they left the university and for those who came to AUP for the first time. A barangay fiesta was held in the afternoon and for P150 ticket, one could receive consumable goodies native delicacies such as puto, suman, biko and palabok, drinks and fruits. Guests were serenaded by marching bands and folk singers. Gymnaires for Christ wowed the audience with their gymnastic feats. On Wednesday, April 3, 2013 alumni and guests were able to go on fellowship tour of their choice: Coregidor Tour with Manila Bay Cruise or Villa Escudero tour in Tiaong, Quezon. The Taal Trekking Tour was cancelled due to concerns of the hot weather and the low number of guests that signed up for this tour. Those who did not go with any of the tours opted to go shopping, have their class reunions or go sight-seeing on their own. Sportsfest Day was Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the AUP gym and at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in General Trias, Cavite. Basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton and parlor games were played. The Adante family were winners on the Ladies Golf tournament. Jocelyn was the champion, her mother Paz was runner-up and sister Evelyn was second. Four hundred of AUP working students gathered at the AUP Elementary gymnasium for lunch compliments of LA alumni chapter under the leadership of Loida Miguel and Ceres ArevaloGurango. They were also given free shirts, socks, towels and a week supply of Jasmine rice. The Greater Northern California chapter gave 200 working students P250 pocket money which was equivalent to one days wage. The students expressed their appreciation for the gifts they received with smiles on their happy faces. Some students said, Thank you for your willingness to care and love us. Thank you for the blessings. . . for the gifts! We really appreciate your gifts for us. May the Lord bless all of you for your kindness. Everyone was happy for the things they received. On Friday, different continuing education classes were held to keep alumni and students keep abreast with current issues and trends in their respective field of studies. Speakers were invited from the local area and the United States.

director of Asian/Pacific Ministries of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, delivered the Divine Worship programs message Give Me an Undivided Heart. The AUP Hour, a regular feature of alumni meetings, was a chance for the alumni to hear reports of the universitys accomplishments and ongoing and future projects of AUP. AUP enjoys an autonomous status granted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and is one of the ten universities in the Philippines awarded the highest merit of institutional accreditation by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP). The Level 4 accredited status, status enjoyed only by four schools out of 131 member institutions of the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency, Inc. is the highest level given by FAAP. Students continue to excel in different national licensure examinations with higher passing rate than the national average passing mark and in receiving awards from different national and international competitions in arts and music. In March 2013, four AUP graduates garnered four of the top ten places in the Medical Technology licensure examinations. Gladys April Catibog topped the examinations followed by Becky Dawn Chavez, second place; Jonathan Macatiag IV, fourth place and Gershon Mark Cortez, eighth place. They were recognized during the alumni banquet and special tokens were given to them. Some alumni gave short talks in the afternoon about PUC/ AUP and their experiences. Marc Amado, president of Lone Star chapter (EASNAC) shared his experiences with his own brand

About 850 alumni and guests attended the alumni banquet on Saturday night which to date was the biggest alumni banquet weve ever had. The ladies were beautifully attired in their Filipiniana or evening gowns and the gentlemen came in their suits or Barong Tagalog. A buffet dinner was served to everyone. A dance troupe from the Adventist Medical Center, Manila entertained the audience with tribal dances from Mindanao. The AUP Ambassadors and Soli Deo, AUP musical group composed of children of AUP faculty members, provided musical entertainment. EASNACs new set of officers were inducted that night. The banquet program lasted until almost midnight. A general assembly on Sunday morning apped the six-day alumni convention. The convention was an opportunity for several classes to hold mini class reunions. In 2017, AUP will mark its centennial year. Some alumni were heard saying, I hope I can come back in 2017 and have our centennial celebration. For a first time of gathering of this dimension, it was well done, Annie Madigan, chairperson of Convention committee of AWESNA, opined. Bert Bagingito, AWESNA president, commented, The opening ceremony was spectacular. Taal Vista Hotel was a good place it was large enough to accommodate a huge crowd. Im happy to be a part of this convention.

In Memoriam: Dr. Celedonio A. Fernando Remembered

By Alfonso. Miguel,Jr. MD

On August 14, 2013 Wednesday morning, we suffered a

significant loss of a very exceptional man of God, distinguished PUC Alumni-an icon in the Adventist medical ministry in the Philippines and USA. There are many from all walks of life who could attest to his notoriety as a visionary, trailblazer, and as a leader who exhibited his great love for service to his family, church and country. I would hasten to say that his life will be greatly remembered with a deluge of anecdotes, stories, testimonies that will be told and written of his extraordinary life-for truly he belongs to the ages of Adventist memoirs. After he finished his Pre-Medical Course from PUC after the war, he proceeded and obtained his MD degree from Manila Central University. He was one of the early Adventist physicians who served as intern/residents at the Manila Sanitaruim and Hospital (now AMCM) under the tutelage of Adventist medical missionaries with the like of Drs Richli, Hedrick, Schnepper, Jutzy, etc. After training in General Surgery at the San, he became the PUC school physician for a few years. He was called in a pioneering work of establishing a Hospital and Clinic in Santiago, Isabela. The Cagayan Valley Sanitaruim and Hospital now serves as a fully accredited acute facility in Isabela province. Tiyong Dons or Doniong as he was fondly called was the Medical Director of CVSH for many years with distinction. CAF (short for Celedonio A. Fernando, MD) finally migrated with his growing family to the US and continued his General Surgery training at White Memorial Medical Center but shifted to a more specialized field of Neurosurgery. He set-up practice of Neurosurgery in the late 1970s at Glendora till he retired before the year 2000. He served as a consultant surgeon in hospitals around the area with distinction.

It was during his busyness in the medical field that he involved himself unselfishly serving the Central Filipino SDA Church at Eagle Rock as an elder then Head Elder. He served in the same capacity at Pasadena SDA Church till he became disabled and retired from his practice of Neurosurgery. Notably as well, it was during his active life tending to a growing family together with her loyal and supportive wife, Adela (formerly Pumarada) deeply involved themselves in Alumni activities. They sacrificially labored hard in nurturing and nursing the fledgling PUC alumni organization during its early years. He served as one of our founding father and for an interrupted 17 years (1972-1989) unselfishly spared and shared his precious time as President of our Alumni organization, despite the demands of a very busy Neurosurgical practice. CAF, prominently led during the Stage of Formalization , Stabilization and Crisis Intervention of AUP/ AWESNA (1972-1992). Quote from Bangele D. Alsaybar, Jr., Chair, History and Archives Committee of AWESNA, Dr. Fernando came at the right time and place, for the association needed a nurturing figure during the quiescent 1970s, and a steady hand through the turbulence caused by the AIIAS/Graduate School crisis in the 1980s The AP Roda Alumni Center project which was his brain-child finally realized during the term of his successor Dr. Romulo Valdez. We will surely miss him but his memory will linger on, for he was an epitome of all that is good. He was truly a gift from God, who emerged from our Alma Mater, The School that Trains for Service.

Summary Report of My Presidency AWESNA President, 2010-2013

2012, led by Loida Miguel, President of Greater Los Angeles Chapter, at Tom and Annie Madigan's residence for the benefit of Working Students. SERVICES: 1. Helping AUP self-supporting students 2. Help AUP capital improvement 3. Helping with AUP faculty Continuing Education/upgrading 4. Rice Program and many more that AWESNA chapters are doing for AUP 5. AWESNA Archives that gather our historical documents and memorabilia 6. AWESNA Endowment Fund 7. Prospective AWESNA Community Center 8. Medical Mission to the Philippines: 2011 Medical Missions at Santa Ana S.D.A. Church (100 yrs old) in Manila, and in Pollilo Island. 2012 Province of Guimaras at Iloilo 2013 Mountain View College in Mindanao In my tenure as President of AWESNA I have embodied in this organization 3 things: Faithfulness, Dependability, and Loyalty (FDL). I have demonstrated these FDL in my being. 1. FAITHFULNESS: All my life since I found the Savior in PUC, I have experienced being faithful to Him 2. DEPENDABILITY: Because of my faithfulness, I can be dependable, and ready to act, and give my best. 3. LOYALTY: And because of my faithfulness and depend ability, my loyalty is to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I know that in 3 years as President of AWESNA it has brought out things for me to make good at. I have learned the difference of what a good presiding chair is all about. To know the Robert's Rules of Order and the constitution has a lot to do with the transaction of business and a smooth sailing meeting. I am not going to make any excuse about it. The AWESNA Board approved last year to support the AUP College of Medicine project. We see the light at the end of the tunnel on this project and this is one of the many projects listed that AWESNA wants to accomplish. I would love AWESNA to contribute more to see it completed. I would like it done with transparency and accountability. Thank you very much, Alberto L. Bagingito, C.P.A. Outgoing AWESNA President

For the last 3 years I have been your AWESNA President. I have been with you through thick and thin. And every journey we have had began with a single step and has taken us to many thousands of miles of successful events and services to our community and to our PUC/AUP Alma Mater. I received a Plaque of Recognition from this convention hosted by Adventist University of the Philippines National Alumni Association on April 6, 2013 at Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City, Philippines. RALLIES: For our organization to be strong, each chapter must be strong and active. I will by Gods grace, along with my fellow officers, frequent our visitation to these chapters, to encourage, support, and help them so that they will grow numerically, socially, and above all, spiritually. 1. On October 8, 2010, Fil and Ella Alcaide and I attended the rally of Las Vegas Chapter. According to Cris Genobaga their members increased from 8 to 25. 2. Glendale Chapter

AWESNA at Its Best!

By Arlene T. Ferrolino PRO, AWESNA Glendale Chapter
Letty Banaag Chapter President

This was the kind of rally that could easily be dubbed "AWESNA at its best!" From the music to the messages all the way to the reports about the recent mission trips, every part of the well-prepared program kept the audience spellbound and was a worthy representation of the aims and goals of the organization and the school "that trains for service." The Glendale Chapter rally held at the Glendale Filipino SDA Church (GFAC) on May 11, 2013 was a much anticipated and well-attended event with not only members present, but also numerous friends and supporters of the Chapter and of AUP. The young voices of the GFAC Children's Choir led by Angelo and Mercy Luna signaled the beginning of the lively afternoon. The program was opened with a Scripture reading by Aida Pineda, past president and adviser of the Glendale Chapter and a prayer by Dr. Marciano Santiago, Jr. Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Norman Knight, Outreach Chaplain of Pacific Union College, who talked about the importance of Christian education. Notably present was AWESNA President Bert Bagingito who gave official greetings after the new Glendale Chapter President Letty Banaag gave a welcome address. Immediate past president, Gorden Farinas also greeted the alumni and friends. Reporting on the First International PUC-AUP Alumni (FIPAA) Convention that was held on April 2 - 7 at AUP and the Taal Vista Hotel were AWESNA Vice-President, Dr. Ernesto Banaag and Glendale Chapter PRO, Arlene Ferrolino. Soprano, Emily Ferrolino, daughter of Don and Arlene Ferrolino, performed the theme song of the FIPAA, "One" composed by Ramon "Bojo" Lijauco, Jr. with lyrics by Homer Mendoza. Other interesting presentations were provided by

the members of the Romblon Mission Team: Eldine "Nonoy" De Angel, Sulpicio "Bong" De Guzman, Joe Gutierrez and Stan Mortel who related their heartwarming and inspiring experiences as they had recently returned from a medical mission trip. This mission endeavor was partially funded by a generous donation from the Glendale Chapter. The mission theme song, "The Power of Love" united the voices of the members and friends to close the meeting. Glendale Chapter Adviser and Senior Pastor of GFAC, Dem Robles, ended the program with a prayer. During the dinner reception following the program, it was apparent as the members and friends socialized, conversed and shared the meal, that this already active Chapter had again been revitalized and reinvigorated to continue their service and reach for their goals as part of AWESNA.

Above is the picture of the Medical-Evangelism Mission Team that went to Odiongan, Romblon, Philippines headed by Pastor & Mrs. Dem Robles and Joe Gutierrez.

BOOK REVIEW:

A Review of Lets Talk by Jan Paulsen

Written by Kendra Haloviak Valentine (Spectrum Magazine)

During his presidency of the Seventh -day Adventist denomination, Jan Paulsen participated in over 30 episodes of a one-hour live talk show broadcast on the churchs international television network. Lets Talk gave young adults on six continents the opportunity to ask questions of their churchs president. It was unscripted and unrehearsed. The Lets Talk website provided additional opportunities for them to express their questions directly to the president. These conversations in person and over email inspired this book. In it, Elder Paulsen invites Adventists of all ages to join these timely conversations. This book is passionate about listening. For Elder Paulsen church is family and he reminds us that in a family differences of opinion are normal, to be expected, yet we still remain family. Each voice remains valued. In families we listen to each other. Paulsen believes that honest questions from family members even though they might be troubling deserve thoughtful responses, particularly when the questions are from the younger members. They are family. So we hear his moving refrain: This is what they said. This is the church speaking to the church. Will the rest of us join the conversation? The questions asked by young people in their conversations with Elder Paulsen included topics ranging widely from wearing jewelry to racism, military service, women in ministry, community activism, homosexuality and more. The issues may be divisive and difficult, but conversation is the key. Elder Paulsen believes we must learn from and with each other. His frank discussion of the issues is unembarrassed, unafraid and deeply refreshing. These are just the kinds of questions I hear when I speak at singles conventions and youth events and weekend retreats. Elder Paulsen believes that when young people are silent and stop asking questions it does not mean that they are in agreement but rather indicates minds closing, attitudes hardening, and communication coming to an abrupt end. And, when conversation ends, people walk away from each other SoLets Talk!

The format of the book reflects its main points. The actual questions of young adults begin each chapter. Then Elder Paulsen shares his thoughtful perspective, often bringing in examples from his wealth of international experience. Each chapter ends with conversation starter questions and scenarios. In addition to his proven leadership, Elder Paulsens deep pastoral wisdom and skill as a teacher shine through, providing provocative questions for his readers to ponder individually, but more importantly within our faith communities. I heard myself say, wow! as Paulsen quoted singer and social activist Bono when addressing young peoples concern that church is culturally irrelevant. Then it was yes! in the chapter encouraging intellectual curiosity. Even my occasional really? pulled me into the conversation. I heard myself joining in. I am sure you will too. Whether you are young or old you will find these conversations just as engaging. The Adventist students in my classroom and in the church where I worship will love this book and will be richly blessed to read this courageous and compassionate invitation to wrestle with contemporary issues with one such as Elder Paulsen as a guide. Paulsen shows that he has listened carefully, read widely and understands that young people are savvy with social media, sharply aware of issues in science and technology, and long for a church that leads by standing up for its moral convictions. This is just what my students need! Elder Paulsen recognizes that issues are complex and the challenges posed by the questions may not always have neat answers, but he is still willing to listen and remains confident in the younger generation of our church family and in the God who leads them. This book by a deeply wise leader clearly indicates he loves his family, all of us, because he loves the Adventist church so very much.

Endowment Fund: All members were reminded of their yearly commitment to the Endowment Fund. Each member were given $250.00 a year for 5 years. Those who have not done so were highly encour aged to turn in their share. December 31 is the annual dead line for those who have chosen to contribute yearly for five (5) years. The AUP Worthy Student Project: We have started an AUP WORTHY STUDENT PROJECT at our chapter. We started this project during the school year 2012-2013 second semes ter. Each member donate any amount they feel like giving to help worthy working students. The response is very rewarding. We send the money to Mervyn Olarte, AUP Director of Student Finance. Dr. Flor Marticio, a guidance director at AUP and Supervisor of all working students at AUP with the help of Maria Tumangday, determines who the recipient of the scholarship will be. We have given them $1420.00 (P58,220.00) to be used for the second semester of 2012-2013. There were 5 students, who were Recipients of this

scholarship. Each student were given P8,000.00 each. We have given them a total of $3120.00 . We are sending them another check in a few months. Two of the students, graduated last March 2013; 2 will graduate this October 2013 and 1 will graduate on March 2014. We get a semestral report of the progress of the recipients of the funds we sent them. Mr. Olarte gives us itemized report of the expenses for the recipients of the expenses for the recipients of funds we send them. The La Sierra chapter makes sure that there is funds available before the semester starts again. So, for the first and second semester of 2013, there is avail able funds to be used for the worthy working student. We are pleased with the way they are managing the funds we send to AUP. Most of the recipients are seniors. One, age 44 is a junior but they felt they have to help her for she has been working for many years in the ground department and is a single mother. Lately, one of the faculty members requested her to stay in her home with free board and lodging while taking classes.

A New Mission and Vision for

AWESNA
By Dr. Elmer E. Bangloy, DDS President-Elect, AUP AWESNA

I would like to thank God for giving me this opportunity to

serve as AWESNA president for the term 2013-2016. I am well pleased to join you, my fellow alumni, during this 42ndconvention as your president-elect, and I want to thank you all for the show of confidence in me. At this juncture, with all due respect I would like to commend the immediate past president, my good friend, Mr. Alberto Bagingito, who together with his team of officers dedicated their lives to work untiringly to bring the fort to this height in the life of AUP and AWESNA. I begin my tenure, confident that each of us my fellow officers and members alike represent the very best of what this association can be, a group of talented and committed people who through education, research, and service enrich our beloved Alma Mater, Philippine Union College now Adventist University of the Philippines, and our society academically and spiritually. My first agenda is to spell to you our mission, and our vision which embodies our immediate and long-term goals in the next three years as God gives us His will to accomplish them. OUR MISSION: We believe that our Alma Mater fulfills Gods purpose for her existence and has become one of the worlds great universities, has produced God-fearing people who generously continue to give of their time and rich knowledge to the community, and who are proud to be identified as her alumni. We resolve that these truths be kept alive and always fresh in our minds, and that we continue to be ever sensitive to the needs of our Alma Mater, whether its direction, instruction, material, morale, or spiritual; and to act accordingly to the best of our ability. OUR VISION: Goals: The following goals consist of our vision for the next three years, 2013-2016. Immediate: 1) College of Medicine (COM), AUP 2) Working Students Project 3) Fund Raising events to finance AWESNA Projects Long-Term: 1) Endowment Fund 2) Medical-Dental Missions to the Philippines

3) Membership Awareness Reaching out to past/ non-active alumni 4) Local Chapters Enrichment and Development Our mission and vision sound easy, but they can be tremendously challenging. In our mission, we endeavor to live up to the ideals of our Alma Mater. Our vision prompts us to see further and probe deeper into opportunities and possibilities to reach our goals and realize our dreams. In both, we become intentional! As your leader, it is my vision and conviction that these goals and dreams can and will be achieved. When work, commitment, and pleasure all become one, (and I say pleasure since undaunted service is nothing without the joy of doing it,) and we reach the deep well where passion to serve lives, nothing is impossible. Productivity is always the result of three things: a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort. Let us all therefore work together in unity as a team for this is the glue that will keep our endeavors solid and bring to accomplish. How true are the words of Vince Lombardi, the great American football player and coach, when he said, Individual commitment to a group effort that is what makes a team work. Furthermore, American businessman and philanthropist, Bill Gates echoed, Great organizations demand a high level of commitment by the people involved. Let us then with determination commit to the unrelenting pursuit of our goals. Above all, let us allow God to lead and guide us in this new venture of partnership with Him, because through Him all things are possible! Thank you.

AWESNA Board Members 2013 Thank you for serving!
