Definition: Social Responsibility
Responsibility of an organization for the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behaviour that is consistent with sustainable development and the welfare of society; takes into account the expectations of stakeholders; is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behaviour; and is integrated throughout the organization.
Further elaboration on the meaning of social responsibility is provided in Section 4.2 (The concept of social responsibility)

On the content of ISO 26000, the workshop participants:


Highlight the generally weaker levels of government in the region, and draw attention to the following aspects:
This has significant implications for the nature of the SR activities of the private sector, NGOs and other organisations in the region There is much that Northern organisations can learn from the SR activities of African organisations arising from these challenges they face and the nature of their responses to these challenges It is suggested that specific provision needs to be made in Clause 4 for the implications that this issue has on the concept of SR It is suggested that more explicit provision needs to be made within ISO 26000 for the specific implications of SR for government - an an organisation that is subject to the same expectations on SR, and as regards its particular responsibility in giving effect to SR in policy and regulation

On the content of ISO 26000, the workshop participants:


Emphasise the need to ensure provision in the standard for Africa-specific issues, including for example:
The promotion of poverty eradication and the attainment of the MDGs Addressing corruption and promoting the need for transparency Addressing HIV/Aids and other health issues including maleria Ensuring appropriate provision of socio-economic infrastructure and social security measures Promoting product stewardship and life cycle issues so as to minimise developing country impacts Promoting the effective application of fair operating and trade practices in the developing country context (including e.g. product recalls) Safeguarding the role of women and addressing child labour concerns The need to encourage greater SR practices in government Encouraging greater development and use of partnerships Addressing the challenge of skills development Ensuring protection of human rights
