This spell of weather has put a spring in everyones step and businesses are out in force with our 4 events in July being sold out we partnered with the NRF to host an event on Trends in Recruitment and Retention that saw almost 140 members engage with the great line-up of speakers. Our forthcoming Speed Networking, Summer Barbeque and seminar Social Media Wake-up Call, being run by the Biznetcork Skillnet group, are all sold out so we look forward to seeing a wide selection of members over the coming weeks. In our up-coming events schedule we are delighted to announce the launch of our 2013 Golf Classic with sponsors Laya healthcare, on the 5th September in the Castlemartyr Restort. As always this promises to be a great corporate event, so why not join us and celebrate the end of summer by putting forward a team. We continue our tradition of collaborating with the Ireland France Chamber of Commerce, hosting a Networking Lunch on the Pont Aven on Saturday 7th September. Given the recent form of events selling out we encourage all members to book early to avoid disappointment. Recent economic and policy work has focused heavily on aviation aspects with an emphasis on improving the air connectivity for the business community. We recently hosted a business breakfast with Pdraig Rordin, Chairman of the DAA and engaged with members in an effort to ensure all businesses were given an opportunity to share their view. This information has been used to complete a submission on National Aviation Policy which aims to encourage and facilitate the continued development of the Irish Aviation Industry, further details can be found on page 4. The Chambers Q2 Economic Bulletin is also published with this edition of Chamberlink and this quarters Bulletin includes the results of the Chambers economic trends survey which is also used in our lobbying and representation activity, so please take time to review. We hope you enjoy the rest of the Summer and I look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming events and please continue to engage with the Chamber Policy team through our survey, polls or contact us directly via LinkedIn, Twitter or phone. Cork Chamber works to improve air connectivity for Cork Businesses
Chamber submission to the National Aviation Policy
As the principal international gateway for the South of Ireland, Cork Airports services and air-connectivity are critical to the economic growth and development of Irelands second city and key to the overall economic performance and long-term competitiveness of Cork and its surrounding regions. Cork Airports services and air connectivity are a core priority for the Chamber given the vital role of regional, accessible air-services in facilitating business and commercial activities and wider regional economic development. In July, the Cork Chamber made a submission to the Department of Transports consultation on A National Aviation Policy. The purpose of this consultation is to prepare a first ever National Aviation Policy which aims to encourage and facilitate the continued development of the Irish aviation industry by making it more competitive and addressing any existing barriers to its growth. Some of our key recommendations are: Designate Cork Airport as a Gateway Airport for the South of Ireland and one of three 24 hour airports in the state Establish a local consultative committee comprised of key regional stakeholders including business representatives to regularly engage with Cork Airport and the DAA and feed into the strategic development of the Airport The Department and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) must focus on securing as broad a range of full service and budget airlines flying into and out of Ireland to facilitate existing and future passenger demand Develop an integrated tourism strategy which strengthens and better aligns the activities of key stakeholders in tourism, aviation and enterprise to increase the number of inbound business and leisure tourists Continuous prioritisation of a competitive air transport environment to increase the number of destinations served across the UK and Europe from Cork Airport A commitment to protect and grow connectivity to London Heathrow (LHR), Schiphol and Paris given the essentiality of these routes for onward connectivity to high demand business destinations currently not served from Cork Airport Assess the possibility of developing a ground-oriented regional distribution centre for Cork Airport which sees private distribution and logistics companies working in tandem with the Airport to provide integrated / proximate services for air cargo Efforts to secure a carrier for a Cork-Dublin route must continue in order to support existing multinationals in the region and indigenous businesses and to attract further FDI

Further details on our submission can be found in our Q2 2013 Economic Bulletin or at www.corkchamber.ie/chamber_policy_ submissions.cfm The Policy Department would like to thank members who provided comments and feedback in the preparation of this submission.

Chamber calls for reintroduction of Cork-Dublin air link:

The Chamber has welcomed the decision by Aer Lingus to reinstate its direct route to San Francisco from Dublin in April 2014 but has called for the reintroduction of connecting flights between Cork and Dublin to facilitate onward connectivity for Cork-based businesses. The Cork region has an already well developed cluster of ICT companies and the region continues to strengthen its linkages and successful partnerships with San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Corks hosting of the Silicon Valley Comes to Ireland Summit earlier this year, its strong track record in attracting FDI from Silicon Valley and the number of Cork-based indigenous companies who have operations in Silicon Valley are just some examples of the strong business linkages between Cork and San Francisco. However, a Cork/Dublin air service is essential to enable Cork businesses to fully capitalise on business and inward investment opportunities that strong US air connectivity provides. While there are challenges involved in securing this route, the Chamber is very committed to engaging with and lobbying on behalf of our members to try to bring about direct air connectivity between Cork and Dublin.

Chamber supports Redevelopment of Marina Park

Cork Chamber has communicated its support for the proposed redevelopment plans for Marina Park to Cork City Council as part of the public consultation on the Draft Master Plan for the Marina Park. The Chamber recognises and welcomes the economic benefits that will result from the redevelopment and upgrading of Pirc U Chaoimh to a modern stadium and the added development of a Centre of Excellence. This redevelopment will provide a welcome boost for the local construction industry as well as longer term employment opportunities that will result from the hospitality, facilities management, servicing and Gaelic games development jobs at the new Pirc U Chaoimh amenities. In addition to the GAA games and additional sporting, conference and entertainment events that will be held at the upgraded facilities, it will also provide additional wider economic benefits for the tourism, retail and hospitality sectors.

Cork City Development Plan 20152022

The Chamber has prepared a submission in response to an issues paper released by Cork City Council as part of its preparation of a new Cork City Development Plan (2015 2021). The submission identified a number of key recommendations to support and enhance the city over the lifetime of the new Plan: The new Plan must be developed within the context of the wider Cork Area Strategic Plan which provides a comprehensive vision and strategy for the development of Cork City up to 2020 There are many good examples of collective partnershipbased approaches to city and regional development including Cork innovates, Energy Cork and TEAM. City Council must continue to place strong emphasis on partnership based approaches to planning and development to facilitate its successful implementation Formal recognition of City Councils commitment to the development and implementation of a marketing/strategic messaging plan for the region Detailed implementation and monitoring plans across the various sections of this six-year plan are essential We commend the attention of the issues paper to the need for strategies focused on innovation, economic diversity, skills and human capital, connectivity, place quality and strategic governance capacity. Further elaboration on how City Council will facilitate action across these themes is welcome Mechanisms must be put in place to facilitate and foster greater engagement between academia and industry to ensure that our learning institutions are providing the types of education and range of skills needed by the region. This will assist City Council in attracting inward investment and employment City Council must support schemes which incentivise construction of appropriately built office space so that Cork is best positioned to capitalise on inward investment from high-growth companies Implementing plans and strategies that revitalise the city centre and increase footfall must be incorporated into the Plan. For instance, City Council must incorporate proposals into the Plan which trial, test, evaluate and extend particular parking incentive schemes to increase the number of shoppers travelling into the city centre

Access to Finance - Autumn Series
Are you having trouble identifying sources of finance to start-up or grow your business? Have you approached your bank for a loan or other form of finance? Do you know if your business is eligible for state agency funding, or which agencies can offer financial support to SMEs? Are you baffled by the complexities of EU funding and how to go about applying for it? Do you know the difference between a venture capitalist and a business angel? Have you heard of crowd financing?

Join us this Autumn to have your questions answered!

SMEs can find it extremely challenging to finance the start-up and growth of their business, not least because of negative public perceptions about the availability of financing options. Despite the fact that there are currently plenty of SME financing supports available, a recent ECB survey revealed that access to finance ranked as the second largest business concern for Euro Area SMEs. Irish SMEs were among the highest percentage respondents (24%) who found access to finance troubling, compared to a Euro Area average of 16%, with those least concerned coming from Germany and Austria (8%).* According to Cork Chambers most recent Economic Trends Survey, 38% of the SMEs surveyed have requested some form of financing from their bank in the last 3 months, while 32% of the respondents had explored other types of non-bank finance such as government supports, VC, business angel, private investor or EU funding. However, identifying potential sources of funding for your business, and understanding the difference between the various financing options available can be difficult. The Enterprise Europe Network office, based at Cork Chamber, is tasked with helping small companies make the most of the business opportunities in the European Union, and is expected to play an increasingly significant role in assisting SMEs to identify and access finance for the development and growth of their businesses. We are therefore organising a series of seminars this Autumn 2013, dealing with the theme of Access to Finance for SMEs. The aim of this series is to unravel the complexity of this topic for small businesses, giving a clear and basic outline of the availability of different types of SME finance, how to access it and the criteria involved. The series will be divided into four parts, each focusing on a different area of finance. The themes and provisional dates for these events are as follows: Part 1: Bank Financing (Wednesday 11th September 2013) Part 2: EU Funding (Wednesday 9th October 2013) Part 3: Venture Capital & Private Investments (Wednesday 6th November 2013) Part 4: State Agency Funding (Wednesday 4th December 2013) Target Audience: The seminars are aimed at start-ups and SMEs who would like to get a clearer understanding of the various forms of finance available to small businesses. Venue: Cork City Centre (exact location tbc) Cost: FREE Details of each seminar will be announced in future editions. For more information or to pre-register for any of these seminars, email katherine@corkchamber.ie * http://www.ecb.int/pub/pdf/other/accesstofinancesmallmediumsizedenterprises201304en.

Croatia joins the EU

On Monday 1st July 2013 Croatia became the 28th Member State of the European Union. Croatias accession marks another milestone in the construction of a united Europe, and Croatia is the first new member since Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007. Though Croatia is not yet a member of the Eurozone, its recent accession saw the end of customs controls at internal EU borders and it can now trade goods freely within the EU. The single market will offer new opportunities for partnership and networking with similar industries and sectors within an enlarged EU. The accession of Croatia will also boost opportunities in the area of public procurement. Important components of Croatias economic output include: tourism; ship-building; manufacturing; food and drink; and agriculture. The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) has seven branches across Croatia. The EEN assists companies in the development of their business in new markets, to source or license new technologies and to access EU finance and EU funding. It has a network of over 600 partner organisations abroad and offers a business partnering service for companies who wish to identify potential suppliers, distributors, joint venture opportunities and partnerships in foreign markets. Vodafone Ireland to Build High Speed Fixed Data Network for Public Sector
Vodafone Ireland recently announced that it has been selected by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform to supply a managed high bandwidth fixed data network to Government departments and public sector agencies. The new network will help accelerate the Governments implementation of cloud computing to deliver a digital infrastructure that will improve public services and drive a more efficient public sector. Vodafone will build a fibre-based high bandwidth network, which will run at speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. This will enable data centre consolidation, accelerate the implementation of the Governments cloud strategy and provide improved access to a range of new shared services and applications. Vodafone plans to invest 5m to provide this infrastructure over the next three years. Commenting on the announcement, recently appointed Government CIO, Bill McCluggage added, This new high bandwidth network will enable the public sector to realise its vision of improved and more efficient services based on a Cloud First approach.
