Wabasha County Historical Society open house is August 25

READS LANDING Homecoming has become an annual tradition at the Wabasha County Historical Society. The event stems from that time in the early 20th Century, after Reads Landing dwindled in importance and size, when former residents of the town returned to reunite with friends and family. Homecoming for 2013 will be an open house which will be held on Sunday, August 25, at the WCHS Museum Reads Landing. It is intended to be a celebration of the museum and the history of the people who first settled this area of Minnesota. It doesnt matter whether or not you are originally from the county, just come and meet new friends or get reacquainted with old friends. This years festivities will be loaded with special events. Starting the day will be an old fashioned potluck picnic at 12:30 p.m. Bring your favorite casserole, salad, vegetable, and a lawn chair. Lemonade, paper plates, napkins, and plasticware will be provided. The picnic will be followed by dessert; root beer floats are donated by the owners of Ruby Beets Antiques in Reads Landing. At 1:30 p.m. there will be music by Two of a Kind, the Tim Kriese Duo who play a wide variety of familiar musical styles and favorite tunes. If food and music are not enough, you will have an opportunity to participate in three additional activities. First, find a partner and participate in the first annual WCHS Bean Bag Throwing Contest. Come and see who will win the grand prize, a 2014 family membership to the Wabasha County Historical Society. Second, for a small fee, you can have your photograph taken in one of our vintage settings at the museum. How much fun would it be to have your photo taken in the 1916 Model T Ford? Thirdly, you will have the opportunity to lock someone in the Zumbro Falls Jail. For a mere $5, lock that special someone away for 15 minutes. The detainee will have the opportunity to try and convince someone to bail them out, or after 15 minutes, spring themselves from jail. Remember, however, nothing is ever so special as sweet revenge. In addition, everyone attending the event will have the chance to view the new, redesigned, and expanded exhibits for 2013 in the WCHS School and Machine Shed.

Goodhue County Deputy Matt Bowron and Ambush, the countys newest K9, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd cross.

Sheriffs office adds new K9 unit

The Goodhue County Sheriffs Office has recently added a new K9 unit. Ambush is a two-yearold Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd cross. He is cross-trained in narcotics and patrol work (tracking and handler defense). He was donated to the sheriffs office by K9s 4 Cops, a non-profit organization out of Texas that helps to provide law enforcement agencies with dogs. (www.k9s4cops.org) Ambush and his handler, Deputy Matt Bowron, went to basic K9 school for six weeks at Vohne Liche Kennel in Peru, Indiana. The schooling was made possible, in part, through donations from the Zumbrota Ambulance and Goodhue County Electric Co-op (Operation Round Up Program). Deputy Bowron has been with the Goodhue County Sheriffs Office since 2008, and he and Ambush continue to train daily. Ambush will be receiving a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to the efforts of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., an all-volunteer charity located in East Taunton, Massachusetts whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement dogs throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950 and is warrantied for five years. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 425 law enforcement dogs with protective vests since their inception in August of 2009. New K9 graduates as well as K9s with expired vests are eligible to apply for the ballistic vests.

Wabasha County Historical Society re-opens the Machine Shed

The Wabasha County Historical Society celebrated the Grand Re-Opening of the Machine Shed on August 4. The equipment in the shed was reorganized and cleaned. Rodney and Lynn Florin and other Florin family members donated signs with the information about 40 pieces of antique farm equipment. Rodney brought about 20 family members from Colorado, the Twin Cities, Winona, and other areas together to explain how this equipment was used with horse power. The Florin family established themselves in Wabasha where the Florin Dairy was a prosperous business. The family donated a DVD and player depicting the history of the Florin Dairy. The family also enjoyed visiting the 1870 school building in Reads Landing and found other pieces that were donated by the Florins. Later that afternoon, Terry Helbig led a discussion about century farming. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Howatt and Helen Howatt Moyer whose father, Lester Howatt, donated the 1916 Model T Ford to the museum many years ago. Lester Howatt is fondly remembered for obtaining many of the pieces of equipment that are in the museum shed. He also worked tirelessly at the museum. Also attending were Dave and Rita Cronin whose uncle, Sylvester Cronin donated the bobsled at the museum. The next event at the Wabasha County Historical Society in Reads Landing is August 25. It will be homecoming/open house at the museum. There are several entertaining events scheduled. All are welcome to attend.
