Is equality for all within your country a realistic and desirable aim?

Keywords: equality/within your country/ realistic and desirable aim Context: Singapore Stand: No, equality for all is not entirely realistic and desirable aim. Ultimately, what is deemed desirable may not be realistic and what is considered realistic may not be truly desirable. Equality Definition: the state of being equal/a state of being essentially equal or equivalent; equally balanced; / the quality of being the same in quantity or measure or value or status Forms of equality: social/racial/income/gender/job opportunities/religious/education opportunities Examples of equality issues in Singapore INCOME INEQUALITY -SINGAPORE HAS ONE OF THE WORLDS HIGHEST GDP PER CAPITA ($70,600) BUT THE WEALTH GAP IN SINGAPORE IS RISING . THIS IS REFLECTED BY THE GINI COEFFICIENT WHICH SHOWS A STAGGERING 0.473 PRESENTLY. THERE IS ALSO AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS FAMILIES ASSISTED BY MCYS (FROM 72 IN 2009 TO 142 IN 2011) Gender inequality -Women made up only 7% of boardroom positions in listed companies in Singapore in 2011. -Singapore scored fairly poorly on the World Economic Forums 2012 Gender Gap Index, ranking 55th out of 135 countries. Racial inequality -The PAP-led Singapore government claims the city-state is a multiracial society whereby each citizen is provided equal opportunities. Yet it has not signed one of the rst human rights treaties, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination(1966), nor is Singapore a signatory to the United Nations Amendment to article 8 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (1992). -Mr Muigai (UN rapporteur) said that including race on the identity cards accentuated racial difference that contributed to racially based policies, which then led to racial discrimination. -existence of Special Assistance school(SAP) schools shows that the govt. favour Chinese culture and mandarin language. Definition of realistic: practical or pragmatic rather than ideal or moral Definition of desirable: idealsitic

Definition of aim: purpose/goal/intention INTRO In Singapore, women on average earn 88cents of a dollar earned by men. This highlights the blatant disparity in the unequal treatment because of gender. Conversely, detractors may see this as the remarkable progress made by Singapore and in one step closer to achieving equality. Then again, equality for all does not only comprise of gender but rather income, race and job opportunities just to name a few. Undoubtedly, everyone in society yearns for equality-to be on par with their fellow citizens. However, how feasible is it to achieve equality for all when the government, the society and globalisation plays a key role in perpetrating inequality.Ultimately, the goal of achieving equality for all may not necessarily be one that is realistic and desirable.
