ThethirdhybridmodelofthenewSClass,theS500PLUGINHYBRID,setsnewbenchmarkswithregardto efficiencyaswellasdrivesystemandclimatecomfort.With69gCO2perkilometre(3litres/100km)the SClasssetsanewbenchmarkforluxurysaloonsthatjustafewyearsagowasthoughtvirtuallyimpossible. The80kWelectricdrivewithexternallyrechargeablebatterymakesemissionfreedrivingforabout30km possible.Itiscombinedwiththenew3.0litreV6turbochargedengine.MercedesBenzwillpresenttheS500 PLUGINHYBRIDattheFrankfurtMotorShow(IAA).Themarketlaunchwillbenextyear.

TheS400HYBRIDwasthefirstintheworldtofeatureastandardspecificationhybriddrivesystemwithlithiumion batteryin2009.WiththenewSClassMercedesBenzexpandsthehybridlineupinthismodelseriestothree models:theS400HYBRID,S300BlueTECHYBRIDandS500PLUGINHYBRID.Allsecondgenerationhybrid drivesystemssharetheseamlessintegrationintothepowertrain.Thecombustionenginecanbecompletely decoupledfromtheelectricmotor.Furtherfeaturesarethesecondgenerationrecuperativebrakingsystemand theanticipatoryIntelligentHYBRIDenergymanagementsystem.

WhilethebatteriesoftheS400HYBRIDandS300BlueTECHYBRIDasautonomoushybridsarechargedduring brakingorcoastingorbythecombustionengine,thenewhighvoltagelithiumionbatteryoftheS500PLUGIN HYBRIDhastentimestheenergycontentandofferstheoptionofbeingrechargedfromanexternalsourcewitha chargingsocketlocatedontherightsideoftherearbumper.Withthehelpoftheelectricsynchronousmotor(80 kW/340Nm)theSClasscanthusdriveforuptoaround30kilometresonelectricpoweralone.

drivingconditionandissplitintoarecuperativebrakeforceportionandaportiontobesuppliedbythewheel brakes.ThebrakepressureontherearaxleiscontrolledbytheRBSdependentonthecurrentrecuperation potentialofthepowertrain.

Inaddition,thecombustionengineisswitchedoffanytimethevehicleiscoastinganditsdragtorquewhenrolling isusedbytheelectricmotorasrecuperationtorque.However,withoutdepressingthebrakepedalnoadditional decelerationtorqueisprovidedforchargingthebatteryandthevehiclecan"sail".Thecombustionengineistobe usedforchargingthebatteryaslittleaspossibleandonlyatsuitableandmostefficientoperatingpoints.
