Indian Iron & Steel Industry in June 2013: An Overview of Performance Trends
1. Production of crude steel during June 2013 was at 6.439 Mt, a growth of 0.7 % compared to
June 2012 & a decline of 3.3 % compared to May 2013. The Main Producers produced 2.059 Mt
during this period, which was a growth of 4.0 % compared to June 2012 & a decline of 5.6 %
compared to May 2013. The Major Producers produced 1.430 during this period, which was a
decline of 4.5 % compared to June 2012 & a decline of 5.6 % compared to May 2013. The rest
i.e. 2.950 Mt was the contribution of the Other Producers, which was a growth of 1.2 %
compared to June 2012 & a decline of 3.3 % compared to May 2013.
Where as Production of crude steel during April - June 2013 was at 19.609 Mt, a
growth of 1.0 % compared to April - June 2012. The Main Producers produced 6.315 Mt
during this period, which was a growth of 6.7 % compared to last year. The Major Producers
produced 4.445 Mt during this period, which was a decline of 5.9 % compared to last year. The
rest i.e. 8.849 Mt was the contribution of the Other Producers, which was a growth of 0.8 %
compared to last year.
2. Production of hot metal during June 2013 was at 4.031 Mt, a growth of 0.7 % compared to June
2012 & a decline of 4.7 % compared to May 2013. The Main Producers produced 2.291 Mt
during this period, which was a growth of 3.6 % compared to June 2012 & a decline of 4.1 %
compared to May 2013. The Major Producers produced 1.219 during this period, which was a
decline of 4.6 % compared to June 2012 & a decline of 7.9 % compared to May 2013. The rest
i.e. 0.521 Mt was the contribution of the Other Producers, which was a growth of 2.0 %
compared to June 2012 & a growth of 0.4 % compared to May 2013.
Where as Production of hot metal during April - June 2013 was at 12.246 Mt, a
growth of 1.6 % compared to April - June 2012. The Main Producers produced 6.919 Mt
during this period, which was a growth of 5.4 % compared to last year. The Major Producers
produced 3.764 Mt during this period, which was a decline of 3.1 % compared to last year. The

rest i.e. 1.563 Mt was the contribution of the Other Producers, which was a decline of 2.4 %
compared to last year.
3. Pig iron production for sale in June 2013 was 0.507 Mt (a decline of 0.4 % compared to June
2012 & a growth of 1.8 % compared to May 2013), after accounting for own consumption/IPT.
Where as Pig iron production for sale in April - June 2013 was 1.500 Mt (a decline of 3.0
% compared to last year), after accounting for own consumption/IPT.
4. Sponge iron production for sale in June 2013 was 1.516 Mt (a decline of 8.3 % compared to
June 2012 & a decline of 0.3 % compared to May 2013), after accounting for own
consumption/IPT.
Where as Sponge iron production for sale in April - June 2013 was 4.551 Mt (a decline
of 9.2 % compared to last year), after accounting for own consumption/IPT.
5. In case of total finished steel (alloy + non-alloy) during April June 2013 :
Production for sale stood at 19.574 Mt, a growth of 3.1 % compared to last year, in which
contribution of the non-alloy steel segment stood at 18.523 Mt, while the rest was the
contribution of the alloy steel segment (including stainless steel). The contribution of the
Main Producers stood at 4.962 Mt (a growth of 11.6 %), while Major Producers stood at
5.610 Mt (a decline of 4.9 %) and the rest (11.228 Mt) was the contribution of the Other
Producers.
Exports stood at 1.133 Mt during April - June 2013, a growth of 14.0 % compared to last
year, in which contribution of the non-alloy steel segment stood at 1.001 Mt (growth of near
11.0 %), while the rest was the share of the alloy steel segment (including stainless steel).
Imports stood at 1.330 Mt during April - June 2013, a decline of 33.6 % compared to last
year, in which contribution of the non-alloy steel segment stood at 1.052 Mt (decline of 31.6
%), while the rest was the share of the alloy steel segment (including stainless steel).
India remained a net importer of steel during April - June 2013.
Variation in stock of total finished steel (alloy + non-alloy) stood at -0.198 Mt, comprising
primarily of a stock of -0.185 Mt of non-alloy steel.
Real consumption (i.e. after adjustment of double counting in flat products) stood at 17.804
Mt, a growth of 0.3 % compared to last year.
