Tobeafallacy,atypeofreasoningmustbe potentiallydeceptive.Moreover,inorderfora fallacytobeworthidentifyingandnaming,it mustbeacommontypeoflogicalerror.

Taxonomyoffallacies

Aristotleclassifiedhislistoffallaciesintotwotypes:

SubsequentlogicianshaveusuallyextendedAristotle's classificationbysubdividingthesecond,nonlinguistic,category into,forinstance,fallaciesofrelevanceandfallaciesof presumption.However,mostsuchclassificationshaveremained relatively"flat",withallfallaciesonthesamelevel Inrecentyears,somelogicianshavebeguntomakeuseofthe notionofasubfallacy,thatis,afallacywhichisaspecific versionofamoregeneralfallacy.Asubfallacyhaswhatever featuresthemoregeneralfallacyhas,togetherwithspecific featureswhichsetitapartandmakeitworthnaminginitsown right.
