Textual Response Evidence pg # 3-4 sentences pg # 3-4 sentences

Event pg # 3-4 sentences Directions: Read through all of the following frequently asked questions before beginning the journal and reading. You will be keeping a dialectical journal throughout the entire novel and it is your responsibility to keep it updated frequently. What is a dialectical journal? Simply put, dialectical means the art or practice of arriving at the truth by the exchange of logical arguments. A dialectical journal, then, is used to arrive at the truth of a written work through the written response to quotations from that work. One way to help is to think of what it says (quote), what you say (put it into your own words), and so what (analyze how it is helpful to you). What It Says What I say So What??

What are the textual evidence requirements? At a minimum, you need 2 quotes and 1 event for each chapter. Make sure you write the page # for each quote. If youd like, you can replace the event with a quote, but you cannot replace the quotes. What exactly constitutes a quotation? A quotation can be narration OR dialogue. You are NOT limited just to what the characters say. What kinds of quotations/events should I choose and what should I write about? Look for quotes and passages that relate to one of our unit concepts. Consider our key terms as well as micro-concepts. Terms to consider: structure, classification, conformity, prejudice, controversy Also consider: 1. Does this passage show how people are being classified based on race, age, intelligence, wealth, etc? 2. Does this passage show how when we classify or label people it can affect society? (think about how labeling someone as completely different from us can impact that person as well as us) 3. Does this passage show how groups of people can create controversy? 4. Does this passage show how various groups are structured and organized? 5. Does this passage show how certain ideas seem to be valued more than others? Write about how the quote or event you selected applies to one of the above concepts or anything else we discuss in class. If you find yourself simply repeating what the quotation says, you might want to select a different quotation or reevaluate how you are approaching the response. NO SUMMARIES! How long should my responses be? While I am more concerned with the depth of your thought, you need to stretch yourself and write a few sentences about each (at least three to four and possibly more).
